i think the point was that with the right investment and opportunity disneytoon could have been Disney’s quirky cousin that would allow experimentation in animation and storylines; leading to films that might be more cult classics like a goofy movie vs Disneys usual over-commercialization of their movies now. where it’s seems like they try to make movies to make merchandise to sell lol

I really don't get Lasseter. He did an interview on the stigma of 2D movies in the eyes of the public, but then he first shuts down their Australian studio, then he blamed Princess and the Frog's failings on its title, sent Winnie the Pooh 2011 to die against Harry Potter, then claimed 2D was no more. And then decided Disneytoon's Planes was good enough for cinema. For a guy that claimed to be on 2D's side his actions didn't reflect that.

Honestly, the whole "ending" of the episode could've been a separate episode in itself...I mean they quite literally shut down DA Australia, and then just outsourced all the CGI animations to Prada Studios...which is kinda the same thing Disney was doing before, which they were so critical of

The tie-in album even included a *Bedknobs and Broomsticks* song in it (this was a few years before *Angela Lansbury's Positive Moves* ). But you cannot ignore the cognitive dissonance between that and all the sugar-and-soy-laden junk food they sell at the parks. Cruz Flores Lol (it’s “Sunnyside,” btw) All joking aside, the previous era of Pixar (post-Toy Story 3, pre-Incredibles 2) was run in a manner similar to how Lotso ran Sunnyside. John Lasseter controlled nearly every aspect of production, and granted creative freedom to the directors in his inner circle (Pete Docter, Andrew Stanton, Brad Bird, and Lee Unkrich). However, anyone outside of that circle, both veteran and newcomer, would be given very little freedom, and would often be separated from their projects (some examples of this treatment can be seen with Brenda Chapman and Brave, Doug Sweetland and Monsters University, and Bob Peterson and The Good Dinosaur).

One has to wonder just how dark Dopey's backstory was to make that Snow White spinoff TOO dark... I mean, this was based off Snow White, which is so much scarier and intense for children than we all remember because we internalized our collective trauma. -Don't get me wrong. I'm glad that there's a Disney movie that challenges kids and stays pretty true to its dark roots. I just can't go in the woods at night without getting freaked out about trees with demonic faces thanks to that movie (totally normal almost 30 year old behavior, right). This would've been a pretty bad idea, since it actually contradicts the explanation that had already been given for Dopey's muteness in the original film. Dopey couldn't have gone mute for any reason (traumatic or otherwise) because it's specified that he's never spoken a word in his life. Happy states in the original film that Dopey doesn't even know if he can speak or not 'cause he simply has never tried (that being one of the things that makes him "dopey").

Walt Disney Animation Japan animated some of the best TV/Home Video stuff they had. Particularly some episodes of Gargoyles come to mind. Disney also often used a Filipino animation studio for these sequels. And Walt Disney Animation Japan was originally Pacific Animation Group before Disney bought them, and Pacific Animation Group was originally part of a bigger animation studio called Topcraft. Topcraft was hitting it big in the ‘80s with movies like Macross: Do You Remember Love?, The Last Unicorn and most especially Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, which was one of the highest grossing Japanese films of all time at the time. Because of this, the studio split in three with people deciding whether they want to make anime series geared towards otaku like Macross, making blockbuster arthouse anime films with Hayao Miyazaki (director of Nausicaä and would later direct My Neighbour Totoro) and Isao Takahata (producer of Nausicaä and would later direct Grave of the Fireflies), and then there were people who only want to do contract work for international animation. The first group would become GAINAX, the studio that made Neon Genesis Evangelion, Gurren Lagann, and Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt. The second group became the legendary Studio Ghibli. And the third group became Pacific Animation Group, which would later become Walt Disney Animation Japan. So yes, the studio that made some of these cheapquels were related to Studio Ghibli. And there was a funny time when Studio Ghibli, GAINAX and Walt Disney Animation Japan released competing movies in 1997. WDAJ released Pooh’s Grand Adventure, GAINAX released EVANGELION: DEATH (TRUE)^2 and The End of Evangelion while Ghibli released Princess Mononoke. I'd personally really like to know the story behind that original version of the Tinker Bell movie - both what the actual story was and what happened with it behind the scenes to cause it's scrapping. Cause, like, way back in the day, before the first movie came out, I read a book with the branding that had a completely different cast of characters and version of Pixie Hollow than the movie series would have. There was also a toy line with the characters from it that I had a few of as well as those characters being who was in the end credit for the first movie. Anyway, that book stuck in my head better than the movie series (despite having read it once while I watched the first movie several times) and I've always been curious about what happened to it.

I would argue early 80s-2000s Disney was just thought to be for girls or babies. There big money makers and bugger successes were mostly the princesses. When they tried making more gender neutral movies and cartoons it didn't make as much money. And was also not nearly as popular. Boys like my older brother didn't watch the Disney channel or see 'Atlantas' or 'Treasure Planet' because he thought he was too old and "cool" to he into it. Honestly finding Nemo changed everything. That was the first film my whole family sat down and watched together and loved. It was almost like Disney reset itself.

Apparently Tara Strong was going to voice Marie in the sequel, Cree Summer as Toulouse, and Nika Futterman as Berlioz. I wonder if any animatics exist, so I can hear Tara Strong's performance as Marie alongside Cree Summer and Nika Futterman? Also Russi Taylor was going to reprise her role as Ducchess (judging by some animatics) since she voiced her in House Of Mouse.

Hey all! I hope you enjoy the episode, and if I can just make one request...try to keep it civil in the comment section & be respectful to each others opinions. I tried to be as objective as possible while going through the Disney DTV Sequels, but I understand that many of you (including myself) grew up on quite a few of these. I also understand how hearing anything critical about something you loved as a kid, or even an adult, can incite a bit of a knee jerk response. Heck, I LOVED "The Master of Disguise" as a kid, and was shocked when I saw just how much critics tore it apart upon release. I STILL think "Hook" is a fantastic movie, despite being told time and time again how bad it is. So just keep in mind that the opinions expressed in this episode are simply that...opinions, which are subjective, and there's nothing wrong with taking a critical eye to the things we loved growing up, or even today. My objective wasn't to "hate" on these animated films or Disney, but to explore the history & criticism surrounding their production. And if you Love any of the movies I criticize, that is 100% ok, and no one (including myself) is trying to take that away from you. Unless you liked The Hunchback of Notre Dame 2...just kidding ;) Mark

So according to storyboard and information, she was going to be the film's main protagonist. Voice cast for the sequel: Tara Strong - Marie Cree Summer - Toulouse Nika Futterman - Berlioz Russi Taylor- Duchess Speaking of The Aristocats, Disney planned on creating an animated series called "The Aristocats: the animated series" where Marie, Toulouse, and Berlioz are now teenagers. Just like The Aristocats II, Marie was also going to be the main protagonist. Currently there are three pieces of concept art for "The Aristocats series" that exists online. The series was planned to air on Toon Disney sometime in 2003. Link to The Aristocats: The Series concept art imgur.com/a/3bOG7Zy

I remember like Master of Disguise a lot as a kid to! I think you nailed how all of the Disney direct-to-video sequels were seen as. I know you didn't want to talk about the Disney character specific movies (i.e. Mickey Mouse and Goofy), but I think those are the best ones, especially A Goofy Movie, and would love to see a history video on them. I'm legit wondering who came up with the idea for A Goofy movie.

Disney should lose a *TON* of the money it has in 2020 for missing out on making quality content like that in favour of live-action Disney remakes in the very near past (2010s) and as (or even more) near future (2020s).

I'm surprised so many critics actually bothered to review the sequel films since announcing that a movie is going straight to video is basically admitting that it's a low production value affair that probably wouldn't make it at the box office.

I've seen "mostly" all 40 of them growing up in my childhood years of: (1998-Present) All on theatrical, VHS and DVD, and the ones I think were really good to me, were like maybe half of them: (listed here) - A Goofy Movie (1995) - Aladdin and the King of Thieves (1996) - Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas (1997) - The Lion King II: Simba's Pride (1998) - Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas (1999) - The Tigger Movie (2000) - An Extremely Goofy Movie (2000) - The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea (2000) - Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure (2001) - Peter Pan: Return to Neverland (2002) - Hunchback of Notre Dame II (2002) - 101 Dalmatians II: Patch's London Adventure (2002) - Jungle Book 2 (2003) - Piglet's BIG Movie (2003) - Atlantis: Milo's Return (2003) - The Lion King 1½ (2004) - The Three Musketeers (2004) - Mickey's Twice Upon a Christmas (2004) - Tarzan II (2005) - Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch has a Glitch (2005) - Bambi II (2006) - Brother Bear 2 (2006) - Cinderella III: A Twist in Time (2007) And for the others not mentioned in this, not worth to watch in my opinion. You did a good job on breaking this down.

Someone's probably said this by now, but Leroy and Stitch was a sequel to the Lilo and Stitch TV show, but not Lilo and Stitch 2. L&S2 was mostly a side story that has little to no impact on the series and was never brought up or referenced in the TV show or Leroy and Stitch. It was basically as relevant as Fox and the Hound 2 and the Beauty and the Beast sequels.
