Looking Back on Yellow Beak and the Legacy of "Morgan's Ghost"
Фильм және анимация
In this retrospective, we're taking a look at an unproduced Disney film that was to star Mickey, Donald, Goofy, and a parrot named Yellow Beak. Although the movie never saw the light of day, Yellow Beak lived on in the comics, in "Donald Duck Finds Pirate Gold," and its many, many remakes. How many variations did this story have? Let's find out.

Would love to see Yellowbeak appear in Ducktales! I could see it happening too. Great video as usual! Your content always makes me smile... thank you for that!

This should have been the inspiration for the Tortuga (pirates of wasteland) hub
There was an episode of Talespin involving a talking parrot that led Baloo, Kit and indirectly Don Karnage to a treasure. It's been years since I've seen it but that might have been Yellow Beak or at least a nod.
Disney really shouldn't be throwing out every idea they come up with.

Just seeing that bird gives me PTSD to working as greeter at Pirates back in the day when the barker bird was out there yelling his spiel over and over all day long!

Hi, Jeff! I can imagine the bird would get annoying. I had to deal with Pete's neverending spiel at the Silly Sideshow myself. The person I feel sorry for the most is whoever works by the Seas at EPCOT, with the constant "MINE MINE MINE" from the Nemo seagulls. Also, the Tea Party people, since the "Alice" music loop is only about five minutes long. That's a lot of time to spend listening to the Caucus Race!
I got to say out of the scrapped Disney films, I really wanted Chanticleer.
Woody woodpecker and yellow beak: The greatest crossover in the 60s comic books

He did mention that Jack Hanna was involved with the original version and he was directing woody woodpecker cartoons at the time
Coincidentally, Universal Studios also had the copyrights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit around the time that Yellow Beak appeared in the unnamed Woody Woodpecker comic and, they both (originally) had connections to The Walt Disney Company (at least before they had got(ten) the rights to Oswald in 2006).
Seems like Yellow Beak appeared recently in the episode "The First Adventure!" from the new ducktales, quite different than he used to
Really is a shame they didn't make more full length movies starring Mickey and Co. We did get that Three Musketeers DTV, but unless you count the Goofy movies and the Three Caballeros film, that really was an untapped market. Probably what they should have been doing instead of the DTV sequels, they had a LOT of comics to work from. They did make those Tinkerbelle films based on the Italian series, but that's about it.

It's amazing how little those characters were used for years, and Disney comics have a greater appreciation outside the US. I think these guys work great in a movie length story, frankly better than the Looney Tunes. And don't get me wrong, I love those guys a tiny bit more than Mickey's gang, but when they go 80- 90 minutes, things get weird. And I'm not counting the two live action hybrid films or the compilation films, but rather the DTV movies that only use the characters in an extended storyline.

mightyfilm the ducktales reboot is the prove that mickey and is gang have something that most of the characters from the golden age of animation don’t have, they can be put in a more grounded scenario and have some developement bheonde been funny cartoon while still be themselves.
Imagine: Your a mirror who has been given life, you tell the truth and that is your only goal. But then when you tell a witch that if they find some treasure she gets angry. And breaks you into dust. You have nowhere to go now, there is no heaven or hell. Your existence is over.

I was thinking the same.
Yellow Beak sounds like a fantastic character. Wow he really gets around. To have met characters like Donald Duck, the Seven Dwarves, Peter Pan, and Woody Woodpecker, I’d almost think that he has either a great flight agent or a magic portal key of some kind. Great job on this video!
Wow. Everyone loves pirate's cove mini golf. Hey, don't worry, it'll still be here when you do come back to the cape.
"I often associate summer with pirates..."
At first, I was disappointed that this wasn't more Disney villains...but after watching it, I really enjoyed it and I'm very happy you made it! Still looking forward to more of the villains series, too!
Just wanted to say that i've been going through your stuff and you have easily become one of my new favorite channels. I really don't see a lot of people talking about these old Disney comics even though I think they can be so interesting! Keep up the good work!
Great video. Now, let's wait for Disney Villains Part 5.
Barks didn’t just end up writing for Srooge, Gyro and Beagle Boys, he created them.

Correct, which is why at 6:34 I said "he went on to create and write for..."
Why is Disney just sitting on this amazing unmade Mickey films? They could just make them for Disney+ (or years ago, when they were spitting mediocre sequel after mediocre sequel), specially now that 2D animation is cheaper and easier than ever. BTW, from one Disney fan to another, you should check the amazing Donald Duck animated action-adventure miniseries "Legend of the Three Caballeros". Believe me, it's as good as Ducktales. You won't regret it.
Even before you mention the resemblance I was thinking that Yellobeack, especially with his most antropomorphic look was similar to Jose Carioca. If they want to introduce him in the Ducktales universe maybe he can be an ancestor of Jose.
Disney should really make this into a cartoon now.
Hahaaa!! And Yellow Beak did appear in Ducktales 2017 after this!! AND it was in an episode titled “The First Adventure!” Granted he was a rotting skeleton pirate who gets possessed but still!! I never knew he existed before DT17 so this video was really cool!! I also didn’t know Jones existed before DT17 either!! Gosh dang this is the show that just keeps on giving… I’ve seen it so many times yet I still find out new stuff about it!
You know, this must be that "pirate movie" that was hinted at in the "making of" featurette on the "Mickey Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers" DVD
I've first heard about this from Yesterworld, and did you know the character of Morgan's ghost was named after a real pirate? He's also the same real pirate that was the name for a famous alcoholic beverage. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Morgan
Yellowbeak appear in the new ducktales series as a undead pirate ghost
10:15 That's a solid pun
I wonder how Colin Looksback is doing during quarantine.🤔
I think this story could have been made into a right to video movie in the 90's and 00's, just like the Three Muskeeteers. Seriously, I think at least it could have been made into a compilation move if they decided not to alright scrap it.
Old Disney comics are weird and fascinating.
This a really great and well researched video, except for one small thing, you say that because of the comics code authority that children's comics suffered, but ya didn't really go into detail about it or what ways that they were worse than before. What was it that changed about them which caused a decline?
@ColinLooksBack
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm sorry I didn't go into more detail. Part of the reason is because I don't have too many sources, but I recall reading in an editor's note from an issue of "Disney's Comics and Stories" that the 60's forced writers like Carl Barks to tone down their stories. They didn't elaborate much themselves, but just by comparing a Donald story from the early 50's to one from the 60's or 70's will show a major shift in quality. Things are just duller for whatever reason.
thanks for bringing up that he looks like jose, i thought he actually _was_ jose from the thumbnail
Hopefully Pirate's Cove Mini-Golf survived the pandemic and is still open to play on... Also, I really would like to see an actual feature-length movie that's part of the Disney Animated Canon that stars Mickey Mouse. Feels odd that Disney's mascot doesn't have his own movie like that yet. I know the Three Musketeers are a thing, but that was a direct-to-video affair, not quite the same thing.
April May and June recently appeared in 2021 the series finale of the ducktales reboot. The reboot recently aired on 15th of March on Disney XD. The ducktales movie is on disney plus, but the Reboot's finale may not.
Neptune? I'm surprised there's no Triton, his son.
Ah the classic old disney comic "let's recycle the script exactly" :p
Just like you hoped, he appeared in the DuckTales reboot episode “The First Adventure!”
did you see yellow beak is in the new ducktales episode
wish they had done a short/ package film of it

hey we're you able to back to cape cod this summer?
Great Story
The creators of Woody woodpecker and Donald Duck were actually really good friends
In the 2017 reeboot's finale, April was a clone of scrooge, and may and june were clones of april. April was a clone of scrooge. And april was webby. That made her scrooge's daughter Donald and Daisy adopted may and june though.
Could I please ask you a question? Ya see, I was wondering if you scanned those images from the Peter Pan story yourself? If not, then you must've found it on the net, so I was wondering if you could tell me where online you read it? I'm really interested in reading one of the stories from that book, called "Donald Duck Meets Peter Pan".

If memory serves correct, I found it several years ago on a site called "Old Comics World." I also own a copy of it printed in Walt Disney Comics Digest, but used the online scans because it was easier for the sake of the video.

@@absolite6 In 2017 they had a 13-episode miniseries. For unknown reasons Disney made NO advertisment and NO merchandising. They sent the series to die in an app exclusive to the Philipines... And then Disney+ came along and the show is now avaiable there (at least in some countries). Check it out and thank me later. Why didn't Disney promote the show? No idea. My theory is that they didn't want it to compete with the Ducktales reboot or something, as some characters do overlap between shows.q BTW, this very video referenced the show at the end when talking about the appearances of Daisy's nieces in media.
