It's not so much about the tank, it's about the crew inside the tank and how well they work together as one.

Interesting comments on loading timings based on loader breech circuits. On older tanks, The firing circuit only completed when loader confirmed breech guard closure and the gunner then depresses the firing trigger. A trick would be to have gunner maintain aim and have trigger depressed so loader would be "trigger" when he closed the breech guard. This saved valuable milliseconds but required loader to know to stand out of way of breech!

In my military career, I crewed an M-48, M-60, M-551, and M-1/a1, it is exciting in the turret during live fire. The most dangerous was the M-551 with the combustible cartridge case. That was a nightmare as the obturator seal had a bad habit of sticking in the breach and falling on the floor. If you did not see it, the next shot was with an open breach inside the turret! I was range safety officer during night fire and had a tank fire in that condition. Flames came out of the loader and TC's hatches. Really bad, casualties, but no fatalities.

@ispycyanide The casings are made of a mixture of cellulose, nitrocellulose , resin and a few stabilizing components and burn up completely when the round is triggered. Only the bottom plate , which is made of steel, remains and gets pulled out of the barrel by the breach once it opens again. You can see it fall down in the video. This saves space, weight and time.

A CITV is a Commander's Independent Thermal Viewer. The thermal screen in front of the commander's station is what allows the TC to see what the gunner is seeing. The M1A2 SEPS is equipped with an independently-revolving thermal viewer that allows the TC to scan separately of the gunner, and designate targets upon the gunner's engagement of those targets. In short, the TC scans and brings the gunner onto the next target that the TC identifies.

That's the arming handle, works the same as a safety switch on a rifle or pistol. When the Loader flips it, he shouts "Up!" to indicate that a live round is in the breech and that the gun is armed and ready to fire.

@Zelatur About 7/8's of the casing is cellulose (paper.) It burns away when fired and is blown out of the gun tube. Only the last 1/8 (aft cap) is ejected into the tank turret.

Very simple. When the main gun gets switched on...so does the NBC system, which is designed to overpressureize the interior. Any leaks, bad hatch seals, loose vision blocks or an open breach won't let any gas or liquid in. During an engagement the breach will only be open for seconds anyway, before being sealed with another round. We don't roll with our breaches open. A grenade in the main gun is not a worry. It could disable the firing pin. Also, max depress and it rolls out.

Here's a question, I noticed that the loader doesn't always take the safety off and yell "Up!" right after loading a round, what determines when the loader takes the safety off? Does he wait for the TC to tell the gunner his target then take the safety off or is there some other signal to take the main gun off safe?

Which is why American tankers are trained to load a round and arm the main gun at a time limit of 7 seconds. Autoloader speeds vary between 3 seconds and 12 seconds, mainly because the turret must be revolved into position to load a round before being brought around on the target lased by the gunner. This can be fatal for a autoloader-equipped tank that has its weapon facing in the opposite direction of where the next shell is to be loaded from.

  • @cgrant26

@harlequin2262 Generally, it comes down to rank. The tank commander is always the highest ranking member of the crew. (E6/O1 or above usually) The gunner will typically be an E4-E6. The driver and loader are E4 or below. Driver has the most comfortable position but is also the slowest to get out if there's a problem. Given the choice, I'd probably choose to be a gunner. (the only one that never has to stick his head out of a hatch, lol)

The casings are combustible, meaning they burn along with the "gunpowder" for lack of a better term, that they hold, so only the plate which the firing pin hits is left, im pretty sure al 120mm rounds have moved to these casing, but older tanks still use brass casings.

  • @bomber6258

Well it is shorter since the sabot encloses the entire KE penetrator inside (pointy tip sticking out at the very front), so the sides of the round are shot out of the cannon, which then separate from the KE penetrator rod (hence the DS/ Discarding sabot in APFSDS). So only the back end of the round is left in the tank. Heres a diagram: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/4b/TRESPI-5_APFSDS.PNG/350px-TRESPI-5_APFSDS.PNG

@antonvix an auto loader is just another piece of machinery that can break down, having a crew member load it is much more reliable, yes the rounds are heavy but you only hold them for about 5 seconds, and you wont be loading 50 rounds one after another. All you gotta do is use your man muscles and a little elbow grease. And yes I know from experience I'm an army 19Kilo Tanker.

In actuality, the A2 was designed initially to have an autoloader, but they nixed it in favor of the human loader. In truth, many MBTs with autoloaders can be smaller due to the space needed for a human to operate, however the problem that arises is that, if the machine is out of commission, the prospect of loading is hampered by the machinery that is in the way of the breech.

Well, I am not sure about the Leo, as the Leo2 and Abrams essentially use the same cannon, the 120mm/l44 or L55 by rheinmetall, produced by General Dynamics under license. It is, because both tanks come from the joint development of the MBT70. I always thought, the Leo nowadays uses combustible casing, too. (try the homepage of rheinmetall-defence)

The breech drops and ejects first, while the arming handle is up the deflector remains up until arming handle is moved down, there is a mechanism from the arming handle to the deflector. It is ver important the arming handle isn't moved down too fast or the deflector will catch the aft cap and cause it so get stuck.

That means that you have two men scanning with thermal viewers capable of viewing in x3, x13, x25, x35 and x50 magnification. By contrast, the T-90 does not have two thermal viewers, rather it has a single thermal sight that the TC can override and take control of over the gunner if need be. From what I have read, the autoloader does have a loading time of 4-5 seconds, but you are restricted to only one sector being scanned at any given moment by the single thermal sight.

@BitnikGr It does matter were the ammo is stored, as well has how its placed. another problem that comes up is tank maintenance. with autoloaders you have more to take care of and one less man to help. now if One crewman is injured your down to a Two man crew to make the repairs, service, and run the tank in combat. the tank would be withdrawn for any of the given reasons. "one less tank on the frontline" and more support personnel needed. you can only make a tank so small!
