    Former M1 tanker here, I did it all (Loader, Driver, Gunner, Commander) at one point or another. He was pretty rough off the mark, but improved considerably as he went along. Training, and practice, in a stationary tank in the motor pool, is fine; but learning how to reload quickly and efficiently and consistently in a moving tank can only happen at Gunnery. Look at his (much improved!) technique on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th rounds: cupping the AFCAP (base) with his left hand, and using the right hand to pivot the round across his left elbow and into the breech. THAT's how you do it. We call it training for a reason. Fair job, soldier. Showed marked improvement as he went along, still room for more improvement.

    To do this, you need to spend the engine life of the tank and shells? To understand how to load the gun correctly? Funny. Are they standing, but at full speed over rough terrain, after several days of marching? What can wheezer do?

  • @robertsutton1295

    @robertsutton1295

    @@id_Usher Doing basic drills in a stationary tank in the motor pool expends no fuel, no ammo; the tank is off, and the shell is a training dummy. Put the dummy round in the ammo rack. Leave the ammo door open. Open the gun breech. Take the round out of the ammo rack, and put it in the gun. Then take the round out, put it back in the ammo rack. Rinse, repeat. Builds strength, coordination, and speed.

However, he would not even be in the loader's position, with most of the TCs I knew. His performance reflects on the entire crew, when at gunnery. (I also blame the TC, since he should've made sure his soldier was up to snuff, unless this loader was new to the unit, and came from a duty station where he didn't serve in his MOS.)

    All I could think of was how miserably overheated and winded you could get dressed like you’re going into the Arctic with a damn mask on twisting, grabbing, lifting, straining, shoving the round down the tube all the while trying to balance in a moving vehicle. Looks like a great way to get heat stroke as well as back and shoulder injuries. I salute all loaders. Y’all are badasses.

    Not bad at all. The problem was maybe the lack of practice (wich is normal at certain point, no one was born knowing everything). The way he grab the shell, or the lack of enough phisical strenght to change it from one hand to the other didn´t look the best. There isn´t a lot of space for the loader, wich makes all movements more difficult, and sure the 120mm shell weighs a lot... Seeing vids everything looks easy, and it´s easy to talk about it as well. I´m sure if I were there, I´ll drop the shell on the floor, load a SABOT when the TC wanted a HEAT, forget to put main gun on ready to fire switch, and who knows what more fails LOL...

    It's a compromise, too many safety barriers would make it more difficult to load fast, and inside a tank there's very little room anyway so the more barriers the less easy people can move around, which is especially bad if the tank was hit and started burning, those same barriers intended for safety might actually end up killing you.

    I was part of a TOW missile loading team, four missiles loaded either side of a Lynx aircraft (eight in total). The first day of training we were a mess. Last part of the drill was engaging the 'arming lever', making the missiles live, something you didn't do until all the team had moved away from the forward and rear blast area of the missiles (in case of misfire) and all of us were forever forgetting to either engage the arming lever or engaging with personnel stood in blast zones. Two days of training it all came together for majority of class except for a few who just couldn't master lightening fast loading/unloading/loading drills or the correct use of the arming lever. First time we carried out live drills all the training and prep worked in our favour, all missiles loaded, fired and unloaded correctly.

    Guten tag! Fellow tanker! Love the video reminds me of the old starting days, too bad we aren't allowed to film in our vehicles, well back then at least. He's new in this video (hope he got better) and he's not used to pivoting the round and using momentum to flip the round, but everyone has their own technique, some are strong enough that they toss rounds like toys everyone just needs their own style its the basics they need to learn 1st speed comes with practice . Former 10yr German Army (Panzerwaffe LP2 A5-7) and current reserve instructor. I had many loaders like this bubi in the past I had to learn it myself. They'll learn asap especially in the German Army were not as nice as as you yanks. Fact is everyone in the tank has to know how to do each others job as least in our army. We would not let a new guy near a live weapon until he got it right and punish for some was unloading and reloading the rear bustle solo or loading and unloading the gun with a practice round until they could not lift the round etc.. When starting out had an instructor who used a stick and used to whack you on your helmet if you weren't fast enough or did something wrong.

While I may be a proponent of the use of autoloaders in MBTs, with enough training and motivation a loader can perform some really amazing feats. And as far as I've seen so far, most countries that have tanks like these have no shortage of either. :)

It's locked automaticly after u push the shell in.. the down side is if u need to remove the shell it's a bit slower.. since the tool to open the breech lock in under the gun and quite clumsy to use.

Never thought the names in english.. like that huge tray.. in finland we call it vetäytymissuoja.. witch translates to retriet cover or something like that.. since the breech moves something like 350mm after fired.. It also collects the shell cases.
