thenoobfactor Despite what Belton Cooper (or rather, Belton Cooper's Ambrose influenced memoir) will tell you, Patton had fuck all say to what tanks the US army was using. If Patton had his way, each tank would have had 5 machine guns on it. Also I'm thinking that if the Sherman had become obsolete in the early 1940s, the army wouldn't have waited until 1953 to remove it from active service-long after the M26 and even the M46 had been deployed-nor would it have curbstomped T-34-85s in the Korean War.

Australian here. As far as I am aware, the M1 may not have the fastest speed, the quickest shooting time, or even the most digitised internal systems out of any tank in the world. But I believe the M1 is the most effectively armoured tank in the world, which also has a safe design when taking into account chain reaction damage, such as exploding ammo. The M1 is probably the safest tank you could be in, and I believe it's the successive work of countless generations of American tanks that lead up to the point of the M1 and it's newer variants.

Not to mention the suite of USA/Nato resources that back them up. Look how poorly the Russians tanks have faired in Ukraine and it would tell you how easily the west would wipe them out. I'm not saying the West wouldn't lose men and equipment. But if we can funnel a few bill-ies over to Ukraine and they can stop Russia. How would the massive might of the full USA military perform. The intelligence and precision guidance of the entire kill chain allows any weakness we have to still greatly overpower any force on the planet. Just look at the effectiveness of the HIMARS system. We've sent 30 units over there, and its basically full stop ended Russia aircraft from pressing past the front line. the US has hundreds of HIMARS. Our stuff is better full stop. There are analysts that state the US military could wage war against the rest of the world and have decent odds of coming out the other end on top. unlike our European counterparts, who we love and need. We have a doctrine of being able to fight two FULL scale wars in two theaters of war at the SAME time. To rephase our military is budgeted so that we could engage with NK/china and Russia at the same time. No other country on earth has even 25% of the power of the united states military. To say otherwise is simply ignorance.

He told me a story that he was "somewhere in the combat theater" driving a Humvee at around 40 mph when 5 Abrams tanks passed him like he was standing still. Used to work with a guy who was mechanic in Iraq, mostly worked on LAV 25s but every now and again had to help work on m1s. Told me he saw some dudes hot rodding the tank around for "testing purposes" said it had to be going 50+ off road. But man, that reverse speed ain't no joke.

70 MPH+ sounds like total non-sense. Unless going down a steep downgrade down hill. The 60 to 70 tons weight will actually help pick up extra top speed when going down hill to help reaching 70 MPH+ Otherwise 70 MPH+ on flat level ground road sounds non-sense even without the governor. 60 to 70 MPH is believe-able. 70 MPH+ sounds non-sense.

P standing for Pivot gear. i remember how cool it was starting one up for the first time. the whine that just builds and builds till you cant hear anything with your crew headset off. whats great is that if your transmission is destroyed there is a red lever to your lower right that when you pull that bitch up it destroys the transmission and gives you 1 gear in forward. btw driver is the best position to be in on a tank. adjustable head rest and reclining seat that is all. my MOS was 19K which is M1 armor crew-member. PS when tis cold the exhaust ports make nifty hand warmers.

It depends on the steering method, one method lets you do stuff like this, other method you can only turn a circle, not turn in place. The difference is how the engine output is routed to the tracks, if you can have one side go forward and one side reverse then you get this, if you can only slow down / stop one side then you get turning in a circle around the stopped / slowed side.

It amazes me that so many people criticize the Abrams from the Russians, and Chinese to even Challenger and Leopard 2 lovers. It just never ends. Even though the Abrams is one of the most battle-tested tanks in the world.

Ho-ly CRAP!!!! The faith in that 70-ton vehicle to stop on a damn dime like that, and NOT veer in either direction (with potentially disasterous results....).. What an amazing demonstration of craftsmanship of the builders and the skill of the crew! BRAVO!
