Living With Big Predators - Life in a Tiny House called Fy Nyth
How have I lived in the woods surrounded by large predators for seven and a half years with no conflicts so far?

If you are new to my channel and Fy Nyth (Welsh for "My Nest") in general, welcome! I'm Ariel. I live off grid (as in no physical connection to public utilities) in a tiny house on wheels in the mountains of western Wyoming. I've been living this lifestyle since 2014 and love it! What will you find if you follow my channel and watch my videos?
Real life here. I try to show the good and the bad. The ups and the downs. What works, and what doesn't. The parts I love (most of it!), and the things that suck. Not just the showroom version of a tiny house, but everyday life in a tiny house. Not just the romantic idea of "homesteading" or off grid life, but the everyday details of this lifestyle. I split my own wood for heat, carry my water by hand, and attempt to grow as much of my own food as I can between the weather and wildlife here. I hope to help others learn from my mistakes and make life just a little easier for anyone else interested in pursuing a similar lifestyle.
I live in a somewhat harsh and cold climate, but enjoy the stunning scenery and wildlife that I am surrounded by on a daily basis. You'll also see videos of of the nature and wildlife around my home. For a bit of my background, as a child, I was fortunate enough to be able to spend much of my free time exploring and playing in the woods. Little has changed now that I'm older I suppose. I moved to a place with a bigger woods and still enjoy spending my time outside gardening, hiking, exploring, and photographing the natural world around me. As the eldest of seven children who grew up in a homeschooling family, I had the opportunity, not always appreciated at the time, to learn to do quite a bit of work. I've enjoyed a wide range of jobs, everything from greenhouses and flower arranging to wilderness therapy with teens, to milking cows. Mostly, I enjoy doing the kinds of things that I think provide a real service or value to others. Some of my other hobbies include backpacking, hosting people, cooking, preserving food, anything to do with nutrition, reading, journalling, and sitting around a fire and talking to my close friends.

Celebrity Bear hangs with Ariel. Too funny!
Mama bear must be very healthy to have 4 cubs.
When bears are foraging for food they are on the move, when they find a human habitat with food, that's called a diner. :)
So glad you are back, I know I'm not alone in that we missed you! Just got to the part where you talk about Burly not chasing moose, yay!
It is so nice to have you popping back up on my KZread feed! Your depiction of your situation is very real and not sensational. I like that. We, too, live amongst wildlife here in Southern Oregon (minus the grizzly component!), and share your views of giving each other space. It is a gift, in my eyes. Thank you for another wonderful glimpse into your life!🌲👍
Leaving all other considerations aside Ariel, you are a hell of a brave young lady, do not know anyone who has got the natural ability and talents to blend so well into your environment as you have.
I live in S. Central Texas hill country about 40 miles from Del Rio as the crow flies. I have a mountain lion with Cubs this year. Plus Bob cats. I moved back to a hunters cabin in August. No one had lived here for years. Ranches in the area are recreational and only have visits. She stalked me for about a month. Left her Cubs here while she hunted. I am very aware of her and I can feel her watching me when she is nearby. Since I moved into her territory she might want to attack me. Also had something growl at me when I was near my creek. Probably nursing Cubs. I would never shoot her unless threatened. I feel we can respect each other’s territory. I am not afraid, just careful and always aware.

The poor people in some parts of India have to go into the forest to gather wood to sell. There have been fatal attacks by leopards and tigers. A clever thing the people do is wear a face mask on the back of their head with the face of the mask facing behind them. The cats do not stalk as willingly because they think they cannot sneak up on a person "facing" them. That mountain lion may still be in the area stalking you so be carefull

I had 2 cougar's stalk me in north Dakota, the one track I could stick my foot in so it was a foot across, I didn't think they got that big and I would come in the in the dark from bow hunting, so I guess if they wanted me dead it would have happened. Freaks a guy out.

There’s lots of cougars in Sabino Canyon in Tucson, a popular hiking area and there’s a water source there. People see them regularly but they’re used to people. No attacks that I’ve heard of. Maybe she’ll get used to you :) Stay safe.
Enjoyed this immensely! Almost 2 years ago now my daughter had fallen asleep on her living room couch and was awakened about 4 am by a black bear tearing the screen off her window! She had cooked bacon that day and her window was open so that's probably why. Still, NOT the way you want to to wake up. Thanks for all your wonderful videos!!

Thanks Ariel. You have had some very interesting’ visitors ‘to your property for sure. Good for them that they have the room to roam. Always sad when a wooded area ( trees and native wildflowers) is cleared for a subdivision. 💕from Ky.
Always good to see and hear from you Ariel... Bleesings💕🙏🏻🥰
I have family in Alberta and it never ceases to amaze me how many people try to get up close and personal with the moose or elk in rutting season...hopping out of cars on the highway to 'take a photo' and get close to them....
Wow but your wildlife photography is really brillant .. 🍀 👍 🍀 All the best wishes from Ireland.
Our neighbor had a bear in their compost pile. He was eatting a watermelon apparently lol!! We have had multiple bears around over the years. I only feed birds in the winter when they are hibernating. We had a bear put his paws on our door trying to get in. The window was open and he could smell something good inside the house lol! Most of the bears in our area of Northern Ontario are actually living close to the city the last 5 or 6 years so they only walk through our yard now on their way to the cities lol! More food in the city. Great video!! Take care! Regards Colleen

Hi again ARIEL Wow a little close for comfort!! I bet your heart was racing when you found them! I know you will keep you and Burley safe... Hoping the snow there will melt and spring will happen soon so you can get your beds planted. I've greatly missed tagging along while you grow your beautiful veggies and flowers. Your harvest is one of the best even though your growing season is shorter then most. Delicious recipes to follow yay! Thx as always for sharing! Catcha next time.
I'm amazed that you were standing OUTSIDE Fy Nyth to film those grizzlies!!! You're one brave soul, my dear!! Truly!!!
Thanks so much for this, Ariel. I love that shining through is your knowledge, wisdom and respect for the wildlife around you...!
Big thumbs up Ariel. I have always wondered about how you deal with the large predators. I am so glad that you posted this most interesting video. Added to my favorites.
Aah knew you're a smart girl... Animals should be admired n respected ... I've met so many bears on trails their not to be feared but if humans understand that the woods are these animals yard and we should be mindful as such... I'll never forget coming face to face with a wolf n a bobcat just amazing
Just came across this fascinating episode (Today is May 16, 2022) and I can't help being extra happy that the wonderful move happened, and that there is a big strong fence around Ariel's house........and the chickens, ducks, kitties, doggies, etc.. What a treat it is to watch these adventures and listen to Ariel talk in her own calm, down to earth, humorous, delightful way. I've said it before.....I'll say it again....THERAPUTIC!!!
I'm so glad that you are posting again, Ariel. I liked the video even before watching it)).
I live in rural southern UK - the worst predators we have to deal with are especially-prickly hedgehogs - think I'd be terrified where you are, even though it is astonishingly beautiful and awe-inspiring. Great to see you; hope you are well. Burley looks a fab adult dog, now.
I live in Peterborough NH and get bears in my backyard. We have stopped putting our bird feeders, too many squirrels and we don't want the bears coming up to the deck.
@jeaniemarczniec7755

My neighbors evidently put their feeders up and they come down via a bear. They also feed the deer and other predators come around to kill the deer and they cannot understand. The squirrels are mean I do not feed them anymore. I live in the Great Lakes area there are bears and more predators, but if there is no food they will not come around.
Glad your happy and safe. when I was a boy i was at my Uncle's farm in the mountains of Washington and I was looking out the window and saw a black bear run past, I said I'm staying in the house!
Be careful, dear! We've got black bears here in MI, and they can get very aggressive, too. I like the fact that you're waiting until they're well out of the area. I guess the mothers can become super-aggressive if one wanders in between them and their cubs. Your caution is a very good plan.
Hello beautiful and Burley too, yes you can bet they hungry you and Burley stay safe. ✌
Good to see you, Ariel! We get black bear but no Grizzly's our way, thank goodness. Looks like mama bear has her hands full!
Hello Ariel I’m enjoying your videos. I started watching them about 8 days ago. I appreciate your kindness sharing your various activities and wildlife. In addition, sharing videos about the safety measures you have in place. The motion detector flood lights, carry the bear spray wherever you go when you leave your tiny house, and so on. It’s comforting to me to know you have many safety precautions in place. I’ve also watched you videos on how to pack a backpack 🎒 with everything you carry and why. And the video of how you prepare the food you’re taking on your hike. Fascinating ⛺️🎒😀👍🏻♥️🤗❤️💜💕
I don't have anything near the fabulous wild life that you have, but since the Covid virus has slowed things down, I have seen more wild life in my back yard. We do have deer, plenty of wild turkeys, hedge hogs, wood chucks, foxes, rabbits and of course a plethora of birds. It makes me happy to see the critters because it's good to see them living a life. Thanks Ariel, it's always good to see you and your fabulous doggie.
Wow! You really live in the wild and I love how you so respectful and knowledgeable about the creatures you share your yard with. I couldn’t help but notice the way you are sitting during your vlog. When you sit on your legs, the pressure in your veins is huge and you could cause an inflammation or a bulge in one of your veins. This is extremely painful and the condition is known as Phlebitis. I used to sit the way you do and my nurse sister said I shouldn’t sit that way as ... well, I got phlebitis. You can treat this condition with an over the counter pill called Venixxa which is Diosamin. Take care.
So happy to find a new post!! Your photos would make a great calendar. Would you plz do a video on how to find financing to build a tiny house and how to find a reputable builder charging reasonable pricing for quality construction? I keep getting refused but want more than anything to build my own tiny home. You are such an inspiration.

Aww thanks! Some credit unions will do RV loans if it's one from a builder that is RVIA certified. Otherwise I am only aware of personal loans, private loans, and savings. There are more and more builders every day and I am sure a whole lot of them I have never heard of. I know Byron and Dot at www.simblissitytinyhomes.com/ are pretty amazing people in CO. Jimmy at Liberation Tiny Homes (www.liberationtinyhomes.com) does lovely work and is in PA. Best wishes on your build whoever you go with! And the folks at Tennessee Tiny Homes (facebook.com/TennesseeTinyHomes/) have been building lovely homes for many years now.

I enjoy your videos and seeing how you live. You are brave and I know you enjoy being alone. You have to to live in the woods. 😊👍🌹
Thanks for another video. I always look forward to watching them. Wow a visit from 399 I’ll save that and watch later.
At first I thought you were saying ‘barefoot prints’. Would be rather rare with the snow, I guess!
I've lived in Wyoming for many years. About to retire later this year. Must be a facinating life you live. Happy for you and Riley 👍
Stay safe.
I think the bears were very interested in your compost pile.Bears have keen noses,I think you do a good job of keeping food smells down, for now they are just looking and exploring, so many people make the mistake of feeding them, and that's where the danger comes in play. Thank goodness you are way too smart to do that ,I enjoy all your videos, keep them coming!

We went to Yellowstone a few years ago hoping to see some grizzlies - didn't see a one. We did hear of a bear/human enounter while we were there. I became interested in their range and was surprised to learn that in the 1800s, they were found as far south as central Mexico and just about every state west of the Great Plains. Not any more. They almost went the way of the buffalo for the same reason.

That's a bummer. About this time of year is one of the best times to spot bears (and a lot of other wildlife in the parks here) in general. Especially just before dawn and around dusk. On a single two day trip a few springs ago, when a photographer friend and I camped in my van overnight, we spotted 28 different grizzlies over the two days.
Hi from South Africa I love to watch your videos. You are so calm talking about preditors and you know alot about them so amazing. Keep on posting can't wait for the next video.
If I was you I would invest in a couple of game camera. I just got one for my backyard. So far no Florida bears. Lol. Just some house cats, a possum and a raccoon.... Edit: I wrote this before you mentioned you had a game camera.

Lovely insight into the world around your tiny house, talking of wolves this just popped up - very good fisher-wolves :) - First-ever camera collar footage from a wild wolf -
Several thousand years ago when I was a girl a caretaker for a very nice estate up north told me of a time when some poachers got into the buck pen thinking that the deer would be quite tame and therefore easy pickings. They got treed by the big buck and one man put his hands down to protect his legs and got prongs thrust through them. Interesting scars for the rest of his life once he and his friend got out of jail.

Hello again! Glad to see you!
We have mountain lions and black bears. The black bears come through at least every six weeks, we pick them up on our game cameras. Electric fencing doesn't even keep them out if they really want what is on the other side, my bee hives for example (bears have destroyed three of my hives over the years) I don't hold it against them, we've even seen them on our front and back porches. What a great experience seeing the mom with her four cubs! 70 degrees here today, I've been working in my garden all day. Thanks for sharing!

I had to go look her up. Saw video of all five together as recently as April15. So great that they all survived winter and are still together.

I am in the very far north of British Columbia Canada and I have traffic through my acreage and close to the house to. You sure really get to see the traffic in the winter with all the tracks, I am always surprised to see how many are around. In the summer unless you get a visual you just don't know what kind of animals come around Always great to see one of your new video's

She was here full time for a few weeks, then in and out of the yard for a bit, and now I haven't seen her in a while. She looked great when I last did, so I am going to assume she is happily munching willows somewhere else along a creek. She was well fed and eating great so she should be fine unless a bigger predator finds her.
Interesting, intelligent and wise suggestions. respect, peace and love.

Once a grizzly or any bear gets the smell of compost or anything related to food smell they won't leave until they get in. I'm too familiar with bear here in Canada in the west rockies. They are watching you and Burley and they know you're in there. They will break in. This is a good time to take the highest action to protect yourselves. My brother lives in the Rockies away from anyone for decades. He cannot compost at all. He has no pets. You are now in danger. You need to leave with Burley for a while so they move out of the area but the problem is that is the bears' territory. Their sense of smell is beyond amazing. Those bears are a warning to you. I wouldn't sleep. Yes they break doors and windows down to get into homes. You are wrong Ariel, bears always look for something to eat. Cougars and bears are Predators !

Thanks for your concern. So far we have all gotten along for 7 1/2 years now of living in this spot and the many others I have encountered over the nearly 15 years I've lived in WY. Maybe they are intersted in the compost, though many bears have walked right past it over those years and not one has ever stopped to sniff it, dig in it, or anything else. This particular bear family was here about six months ago now as I mentioned. And many other bears have come and gone over all the years I've been living here. Yes, like almost all creatures, they are always interested in food. Hence the precautions to be sure my home has never become a source for food for them. There are risks and rewards to almost every choice one can make in life for sure. I think for now I'll stick with what has been working for years.
@carolynhoover9444

Yes. True. Am advising to electrify using wires meant to deter entrance into a home. If they even snell something inside we can't smell, if hungry, can smash through , depending on the structure. As we encroach on their habitat, they don't have territory to roam. I wear what I call hiking bells on front and back of my pack and carry bear spray. I have seen people so close to bears thinking they are accustomed to us and will leave us alone. Wrong

leopards, which are similar in size and strength to cougars, frequently prey on stray and pet dogs in south Asia. I guess it's an adaptation born out of shrinking forest cover in the region. most dogs are an easy catch with basically no defense against stealthy big cats.
