LIVING IN JAPAN ALONE | solo karaoke, shopping in shibuya, & grad school reality (week in my life)

People often ask me if I'm lonely here. I won't lie, there have been a lot of moments where I felt very alone, but they are usually brief. Overall, I'm really happy with my life here living alone :) There's no better place in the world than Tokyo to be ~alone~ and I love spending time by myself and doing whatever I want!! 😇
This is another weekly vlog!! I was just in the mood! And I somehow barely managed to edit this on time...as usual.... 💀Only one more month until I'm on summer break for grad school! Just got to hold out until then!!! I'm going to be adding an extra shift to my work schedule in July, so hopefully I can still keep up 😳Need that $$$ though
In this video I...let's see....went to do some solo karaoke, did a project with a friend, went shopping in Harajuku and Shibuya, panicked over all my grad school assignments, and baked a cake 🥳It turned out pretty good!!! I hope you all have a great June~ My AC is in full gear now 😇
Be sure to like, comment, and subscribe 🌸 And check out the comment section, I have a question about next week's video....🥺

Hello everyone!!! Thank you for watching!! 😇 I hope you enjoyed my off-key singing 😆 I was thinking about doing a Q&A video about Japanese since I get a lot of questions about it!! So, let me know down here in the comments or by sending it to me on Instagram (@allistudy)! Can be anything related to learning Japanese or in that general realm 🥳

I just had to say that I love your videos and binge-watching them has been such a comfort. I much prefer to do things alone instead of going with someone or in a group with others. Mostly that is due to a psychological condition I have but I am never truly alone thanks to having my service dog with me. I have been longing to go places with others recently though but that is because I have done pretty much everything local by myself and want to share with people what I have found.

I still have a long way to go in my Japanese learning journey but I am curious to ask about writing and journaling in Japanese. I’ve seen some Japanese learning channels recommend trying to journal in your target language and/or write down thoughts in your native language and translate them into your target language. I’m having a hard time getting to the level of expressing myself in Japanese and I can’t imagine how hard but also fulfilling it must feel to be able to write a paper in Japanese. Anyway, I am just wondering what are your thoughts on writing and journaling in Japanese, how you approach remembering and increase vocabulary, and how you began authentically expressing yourself in Japanese. Also, it’s truly inspiring to watch your videos. It’s a gift to be able to get your insight on living in Japan and being a grad student in Japan. I hope to eventually go to Japan for grad school in Ethnomusicology. Thank you for being an inspiring example. I’m glad your presentation went well! Many thanks!!

I envy you so much! Not just that you get to live in Japan, but you can use japanese to get around and you can enjoy the culture at any time. Also I agree with what you said on being alone and I sometimes think that today people tend to underestimate the importance of me-time. You can learn so much about yourself by just being on your own, so I admire you for putting it out there as it seemingly isn't very in-style to spend time alone at the moment, which is the wrong way to go about it I think. I love your videos and thanks for the hard work you put in to edit them and show us around Tokyo!😊

I really enjoyed this video! I really love the fact you do ヒトカラ, i will 100% do this when I am able to move to Japan. I love that you also don't like ordering drinks when a person has to deliver them to your room because of the awkwardness, haha I am the exact same. My question about learning Japanese would be: how do i get more confident with speaking? I am ok when it comes to reading and writing (probably around the lower N4 level so i am still a beginner) but when i have to speak i just kind of freeze and forget all vocab or the wrong words come out and just end up sounding really silly. How did you get speaking practice in the beginning? and how did you get confident speaking? :)

Maybe we have this in common--living alone doesn't bug me at all (do your students ever say, "Oh, you live alone? Do you drink every night?" Bc I got that A LOT, lol.) But one time a friend came to visit me and stayed at my place for about two weeks. It wasn't a romantic thing, just friends. But after he left I felt devastated!! It was so weird. I thought, What is wrong w me?? But after a couple of days I was back to normal. And now, whenever my husband leaves on a long trip, it's the same thing. I cry, I hold his pajamas and lie on the bed...but again, after a couple days, I'm fine. It mystifies me. It's embarrassing.

On the subject of doing things alone, I relate to that so much. I used to *dread* eating alone at the campus cafeteria bcuz I didn’t want to be seen by anyone I know. I would always just buy food to eat in my room instead. People are usually out with friends in groups where I’m from so I always felt so out of place for being alone. I agree it’s a loooot easier to do things alone in Tokyo (travelled there alone few years back). I’m better at “being seen alone” now hahaha funnily bcuz I had to go for my Japanese classes & have lunch alone every week (weekly training 😂). Another nice vlog, thank you for sharing tidbits of your life with us! 🙆🏻‍♀️❤️

Ok sorry this is going to be a long comment but I hope this helps. I’ve found that doing spaced repetition flashcards is really helpful, the spaced repetition aspect is that it changes how often the card shows up/the length of time it takes before the card shows up again based on how difficult you found the card. It’s good because the cards you find easy get longer and longer intervals, while the ones you find difficult stay frequent. Also if you miss a card you usually find easy, then it makes it more frequent again etc. The most common app for this is Anki, it’s free on desktop and a small price on mobile. The user interface is pretty minimal, but it’s really easy to make it prettier with add-ons (it also has add-ons to support furigana readings above the Kanji characters if you need that). It also has a bunch of decks made by other people that you can download, like the Core 2k/6k decks (basically the 6000 most commonly used words in a newspaper I believe, so you could theoretically pick up a newspaper and read it nearly perfectly if you memorised all the words), I also use decks with the JLPT N5 vocab as a focus, or you can make your own. It’s a great way to practice regular recall without having other people to practice with. I’d also recommend Drops which is a mobile app for vocab, the free version has 5 minutes every day, and it’s quite generous with giving extra minutes for keeping your activity streak going etc. I like it because it has a bit more of a game feel to it, it has more of a multiple choice format to it, and with it requiring just 5 minutes it’s a great way to integrate it into your daily routine. I always find it’s the regular practice that helps keep it in your head so this is an easy way to keep Japanese at the forefront of your mind. Duolingo might also be in the same vein as this, but honestly I do have my issues with the Japanese course on there, and I think generally it’s better as a supplemental tool rather than your core way of learning. Otherwise, things like JapanesePod101, both the podcasts and the youtube channel have some good stuff. I’ve just been doing an N5 listening practice exam they have, testing yourself is always a good form of active learning. Immersion is great, are there any Japanese songs you like? Look up the lyrics in Japanese, see if you can see any familiar words. When you pull up the English translation, are there anymore you can see now you know what words to look for? Go through each line and translate it, see how it all clicks together: the words, the grammar etc. Say the words out loud to practice pronunciation and maybe try writing out the words as well to get better at writing. You could do the same for Japanese books or anime, any type of Japanese media really. I do find this is better when you’re a bit more proficient so you’re not looking up every single word, but it’s a good way to immerse yourself without natives around you. Plus it helps to put the words into a more practical context, rather than just learning them in theory you now have an application of how they are used and that can help them stick in your mind. I would also suggest language exchange apps that let you connect with native speakers, but honestly that idea freaks me out so I’ve never tried it, ah social anxiety 🙃. But yeah I hope that one of these methods helps, I think the most important thing is just to keep doing a little bit but do it often.
