Livestream: Insularis Draco - My Favourite Medieval 2 mod?

Ойындар

Late Antiquity and the "Dark Ages" are a period of history tremendously misunderstood and not taught about very often in schools, but Insularis Draco takes up this rich and vibrant setting and runs with it. Focusing on north-western europe between the 4th and 7th centuries, the mod offers a plethora of different campaigns in different centuries, bringing the period to life in vivid and immersive detail. Whether you're vying to become the king of all Ireland, drive out the Saxons from Britain, desperately try and hold the failing Western Roman Empire in Gaul together by a shoestring, or rampaging forth across the Rhine under the banner of the Franks or Burgundians, there is a wealth of challenging gameplay and educational material on offer alike. With the 1.0 release of the mod this year, Insularis Draco has confidently secured its place as my favourite Medieval 2 mod of all time, and I definitely don't say that lightly...

    Thank you for the mod. Honesty I just found it and I’ve been playing around and it’s amazing that perfect late Rome holding up a crumbling empire feel. I wish their were more guided explaining regions on the maps specific areas to know but their is definitely enough info in the mod and descriptions that I’m kinda putting some of it together with just playing and reading. Truly a great mod.

    As someone who studies Arthurian literature I'd say what you said about Arthur is correct. I find it strange people would argue about it. At a certain point, people just point to any warrior with an A in their name from this period as Arthur or any ruins on a hill as badon hill, or Camlann.

    Just so you know, Anglo-Saxon words that end with -sc are pronounced like modern English "sh". So Ænglisc is pronounced like "Anglish" (with Ash being pronounced like the a sound in bat, cat, fat, etc.).

    I think people feeling strongly about the reality of Arthur either way is really just a problem of classification, if the name is more important, or the act. It is true that the saxon conquest does seem to have been slowed and reversed to some extent, and the orchestration of this seems to be a focal point of a lot of cultural memory. Now if the figure of arthur is more associated with the name itself, or with simply a ruler who was at the center of this phenomenon (and through some process of historical telephone was eventually settled with the name arthur) is really the crux of the sentiment either way. I dont think many people legitamently think that there was a literal lady of the lake and stuff. It’s more between the name and a figure of brythonic reconquest which was used as the backdrop for a lot of stories.

    You are right, to some people (who for whatever reason harbor anti anglo-saxon sentiment) the point is that the Anglo-Saxons were defeated by someone. Which is funny because ultimately the Angles and Saxons “won” anyway, and the reversal was very much temporary.

    @@sebe2255 eh, I think thats an over particular reason. Some people probably see it that way as a bitter thing. But I think the wider division is caught up on the framing of a particular name vs a particular deed. Im not an expert in the subject, but thats the sense I got from the few medieval sources like morte d’arthur and more modern commentaries on the subject like the great courses plus series. With the the broad focal points being “There could have been a central arthurian figure” or “There was no one person called arthur”. Which seems to be just two different ways of seeing the topic.

    About the voice acting: redoing all the accents would take a huge amount of work. Respectfully redoing them with a bad usb mic just won't do :) I'm a musician with a nice mic set up so I could do some, but first translating all of them and then making it work would take months and months, and I'd rather redo unit models and change the UI instead :P

    I did the Gallic voice acting for EB2. I wouldn't mind doing Old English for Insularis Draco if you wanted someone for it. I've got a professional setup and I'm familiar with OE pronunciation (for west saxon, at least).

    The 'isc' endings would be pronounced 'ish' in OE. So 'Wealisc' is pretty much as you'd expect; weal-ish. Welsh.

  • @mrchuffy8320

    @mrchuffy8320

    @SorcererDave no, that's fair. The written sources don't support a much earlier date than about 550CE (other than the very vague Cerdic). The archaeology increasingly does, though still tentatively. With burials from the late and early post roman period. These show an intriguing mix of Germanic material culture buried with local and even Irish people. Hinting at a very early adaptation from one identity to another. For me, the Gewisse are just a microcosm of the wider period. Fascinating, but frustratingly opaque.

    Mod lead here,@@mrchuffy8320. The 'Seaxan' faction is the main Island Saxon faction which houses East-Seaxe, Suth-Seaxe and, of course, the Gewisse and West-Seaxe. They're even one of the four Royal Bloodlines available within that faction. Dorceaster is the Saxon capital so one could definitely say the Gewisse (or at least, their ancestors) are the main kin group in Germanic-speaking Southern Britain apart from the Jutish Wodningas of Kent.
