When I heard that Halle was to play Ariel in the live action, I honestly prayed for her. I know people can be down right hideous but especially toward black feminine presenting people.🤷🏿‍♀️ Halle was perfect for the role, she definitely captured that unbridled curiosity and her voice is magical I haven't stopped singing part of your world since I saw it.

I would respectfully disagree especially with "Part of Your World". The song is supposed to feel melanchonic based on the context but didn't sound that way at all. She is a very technically gifted singer but I wouldn't say she captured the "unbridled curiosity" of the original Ariel. I felt her dynamics were all over the place where she tries to emulate Jodi Benson in some parts and then abruptly changes to her own original style. It would've been better if she stuck to her own color and style but Jodi Benson is a pretty high bar to meet in terms of embodying Ariel’s character.

What bothered me about The Little Mermaid remake’s theatrical run wasn’t that people were mad that Halle got the role. People are allowed to not want to see the film because she doesn’t look just like the cartoon. Just ignore the release and let people who are enjoying the film, have a good time. No, literally every good post about this film was met with negative reactions. Then there was the review bombing that got so out of hand that it became super obvious that none of those people saw the film. There’s three little mermaid films and a show that these people could watch and show their kids. Instead, they chose to attack a women that’s very unproblematic and sweet to boot. This right here is where I point at the ugliness in people.

One thing that made me refrain from watching the movie was because my brother told me that Halle didn't want to film underwater and so her hair movement under water wasn't complimented very well in the film because they used CGI.

I just generally don't watch films meant for children especially remakes of films I have already seen. However I don't have children so I would think it be odd for an adult to watch a children's film with no critical merit.

The film actually did well in Japan. It made top spot and much of the public opinion started to shift when they saw that her talent was what got her the role. The video of Halle singing with Japanese subtitles has a ton of positive comments praising her and the film. It’s just sad that South Korea once again shows that they got work to do when it comes to basic respect. I don’t care that they think that she’s ugly but some of the stuff said was offensive to not just Halle but to the black race as a whole. I’m also aware that some Koreans loved the film but if they spoke out, they would get flamed online. Smh

No, the whole issue is overblown propaganda. South Korea didn't even have the lowest box office in Asia compared to other countries. Countries like Japan and Philippines barely did better than it in the box office and they have like 2-3 times bigger population. There are multiple countries with bigger population that did much lower. Furthermore, Black Panther did very well in South Korea. Spider-Verse film with Miles Morales also did very well in South Korea. I find it highly funny South Korea was specifically targeted when Little Mermaid wasn't a major success overseas in general. In fact it flopped in India, Vietnam and Thailand and did poorly in many European countries. Yet the media is targeting only on Korea and China.

Didn't expect it underperform internationally, but also didn't expect it to overperform domestically this well; Mermaid has strong legs in the box office; Mermaid is now officially greenlit for a sequel and an animated series based on Halle Bailey. Mermaid second weekend, #1 in Japan despite competition "incredible 35% hold" and surpassing 0.5 billion next week worldwide; strong legs in the box office; only dropping 45% on 4th weekend domestically.

I am a massive fan of the Bailey sisters since their KZread days. I’ve listened to a lot their songs since 2016. I was psyched when Beyonce took them under her wing. I was also heaps excited when they were on Grownish. I’ve always viewed Halle as a pure, wholesome, sweet songbird. Everything you expect in Disney Ariel. (BTW- Disney already took so many liberties with the fairytale. The random Jamaican crab? And the mermaid was never named Ariel, and she was meant to DIE.) My only concern was that Halle’s too pure, and that Eric might be some 30-something-year old veteran. (Fears averted, lol. She’s 22 now, and the Eric actor’s like 26, so all good.) So I was so excited, knowing how beautiful her voice is. And!!! She is BEAUTIFUL. I LOVED her as Ariel. I really felt that she embodied the very spirit of Ariel who I got to know as a little girl. It’s so sad and upsetting that my experience and enjoyment is ruined because people just reduced the whole conversation around the film as a race debate.

I mean, if you are fine piggy backing off white people stories, then so be it, I guess. I'm very sure you would have a problem if disney White wash the whole cast of black panther. 49:00 I think the reason why some people enjoy celebrating Asian Heritage Month, for instance, is to address the achievements and accomplishments of people who are ethnically Asian. Historically, cultural imperialism has erased or glossed over many stories from such communities. It is an attempt to build a bridge of trying to regain those lost voices. It celebrates achievements previously never recognized and addresses the social inequity ethnically Asian people have faced historically. It is an important month, especially since when I was growing up, any deviation from the typical-caucasian features was an invitation for social bullying. For me, that month is a symbolic manifestation of not that I should be proud of myself per see, but that it is okay to have a face that is not Eurocentric and that I deserve to occupy the space just as much as any other person.

The rating system is based off of a five point system with their own individual scores: food/taste, service, atmosphere, cost, drinks. A good restaurant is usually a 3-3.5 star rating. I don’t think there’s currently any 5 star reviews on 食べログ (this includes Michelin Star rated restaurants)

Outside of the US Little Mermaid is doing pretty poor in most markets, it's going to lose money so for CNN to blame it on racism in China/Korea is unfair. Black Panther, Encanto, Coco, Aladdin and many other big Disney movies with POC in the lead or the whole cast are all well received and made big money in Korea. Yes some racism is going on here but this not the only reason the movie is failing.

Buzz lightyear is Pixar, Disney bought Pixar in 2006. Their first female lead film is Brave in 2012, who is considered a Disney Princess. For me, Darkwing Duck was cool, but he or anything on the disney channel in the 90's wasn't close to the market on Fox Kid's.

Now while all of them aren’t animation and they all weren’t multimillion making movies none of them were marketed specifically towards girls and still amassed a cult following for viewers such as myself. So I always viewed Disney like I said as neutral unless it was something specifically catered towards girls or whatever. I think in general what has amassed them so much wealth is to be able to create multiple IPs that can cater to multiple demographics and age groups not just because they swerved at one point or another but because that was always the direction it was heading in which just generated more and more capital.

Growing up in the 90s, and I actually didn’t really faced racism. Maybe one teacher, she sent me to detention for playing cards, but she didn’t send my friend (Not Chinese). She rolled her eyes at me after I left the classroom once. I knew about it, because my friend saw it. She didn’t really talked to the Chinese students, and she grouped us together for projects. She was horrible teacher and she made her TA teach her class most of the time. She would always pop into my other classes and talked to my male teachers, while they were trying to teach a class. One of my Chinese classmate said this Chinese phrase about her: She has big head with no brain, so grass grows in there 😂 I had a good childhood growing up in California, even though I didn’t have much money. My family and I lived in one room (with parents and siblings) when we started living in America. Things got better and better for us. I have been traveling in Japan, and I am not that crazy about fish market. I been to the one in Tokyo, Kyoto and Kanazawa, and my favorite one is Kanazawa. The prices are cheaper and I found one shop with good sushi. In Tokyo, I actually like this small sushi shop, where you have to stand, while you eat. You order and the sushi chef make it for you right on the spot. My favorite restaurants were the ones that I found by myself. I was not impressed by the KZreadr ones, and I only tried a few of the recommendations. One ramen really good ramen shop was recommended by the hotel receptionist. I found a really good burger place by accident because I was hungry, and I didn’t want to queue for ramen. Sometimes some malls in Japan has really good food. Part of traveling, some good and not so good experiences, and it has been pretty good overall.

24:55 "the one on 6th is where all the Chinese people go to and the one on Western is where all the Koreans go to" 😅😅😅 guilty as charged. And i didn't even know 😅😅😅 because i go to the one on Western. I only go to the Western one because it's closer and the parking isn't as bad compared to 6th.

The crazy thing about Fox News putting that story out is these are same people talking about banning CRT bc it makes white children feel bad. 😂😂😂😂 like bro, let's slip it in while King Triton is blowing up Ariels treasure room.😂😂😂 I watched it and I have to say as a kids movie, I gave it a 6 or 7/10. I liked it over all. I disliked that they used a non Caribbean voice actor to play Sebastián and then in interviews hes trying to say that the accent doesn't matter bc its a made up crab. I hated the new song for Eric and the bird. I didn't really like Halle's add libs on Under the Sea. I physically cringed in theater several times. But Halle was amazing. Her acting even while just using facial expressions was very good.

i'm a bit skeptical when they make live action movies of disney classics. out of all the live action disney movies so far, i think i only liked mulan. the only reason why i didn't like the little mermaid was because the cgi was horrible, it bothered me the most because i had dabbled in 3d animation myself (over 10 years ago), the opening scene with king triton and all the daughters irked me the most in terms of how it looked. the nostalgia of growing up with the animated version, the story changed. halle bailey played her role well. however, its ok being a children's film. i watched my niece watching the movie, she's 7, she enjoyed it enough at the moment, but she doesn't remember the movie. almost all disney animated movies were all based on such sad and dark stories by hans christian anderson for his dying son as bedtime stories. i have that book with all of those stories. these stories were written in the 1800s. as for the live action mulan movie, it was based on the long poem (the ballad of mulan). i actually enjoyed this film because it was done differently from other disney movies, it wasn't a musical piece, it had more action, and it wasn't as much of a princess movie/damsel in distress, and a little more realistic. it didn't follow the animated movie because it was written differently from like centuries and centuries ago. it wasn't meant to be a children's film, i felt it targeted the older generation with knowledge of watching all of the versions of mulan as a chinese drama. There's so many. as an abc myself, i enjoyed the historical aspect of it. going back on the history of this women that joined the army and lived basically like a man, they knew she was a female, it took her like over 25 years to become a general. based on books and context alone, there are so many versions. as my opinion, like you said, from my stand point as a parent, as an artist, as an avid reader, as a gen x person, and as an open minded person, everyone is entitled to their opinions. we should all take these so called critiques with a grain of salt and not be so butt hurt. all my artworks when i was in college were all critiqued by my peers as well as my professors and staff in the art department, you may not agree, but sometimes those critiques help you to make your stuff better.

I drink so much ‘Red-Bull’, I’m surprised it hasn’t gone classic yet. The flavor is so eclectic; it’s never the same taste certain days. I enjoy it when it taste creamy. I thought they’d go; jelly bean; chocolate flavored. Or a; supposed to be; creamy series limited time flavors. The energy totally exists. You have to control and accept those jitters and let it energize your day. I love ‘Red-Bull’, and it’s not because of that, ‘Yes-Man’, movie. That movie might be a little of the reason why I even thought of bingeing on that highly caffeinated swiggy drank. My weight loss is all thanks to one of the most classic energy drinks ever. I cann’t get down with the sugar-free stuff. It makes me sleepy instead of energized. Maybe it’s a sex aid or some, but I do not feel stoked and up and ready to get at it. I like to imagine that recycling those cans promotes healthy lifestyles and ethical study habits.

46:45 Asians in Asia still openly hate one another over nationality, while Asians in America had no choice but to work in solidarity with one another because they understood they would always be seen as “Asian” regardless of their national origin by American society. That humbles you to be empathetic toward other groups facing racism, which is why some of the comments coming from Asia are straight up shocking to read because you realize you’re ahead of a conversation that others are just now tuning into

It's not like "The Princess and the Frog," where it highlights the plight of being an underclass black woman trying to get her own business (its also a Disney animated movie that has an actual city/state as its setting), or Pocahontas (self-explanatory). This character couldn't possibly exist. It's a fish person. They can look like any-fkn-thing.

I have no issues with Halle and a Black Ariel. My issue is the changing of the story and character's character for the sake of the movie. It loses the power in story and the lesson. I don't like that. Halle from what I have seen is a great actress and singer. That being said, I agree with China saying "show the stories that are from the culture and diaspora, not change the old stories". I honestly want to see more legit stories that don't follow this "political correctness". Even the Woman King was more interesting and led to me learning more than the new Little Mermaid. Sigh

Ok I'm gonna be COMPLETELY non-complacent and unbiased here.. alot of the criticism for the black The Little Mermaid are actually pretty reasonable and valid. Its not always coming from the racist logic like many right wingers who idolize Ben Shapiro and masturbate to The Daily Wire spreading propaganda like they always do. The new live-action film is just completely unnecessary, as it obviously shows that its trying to push a false sense of diversity down our throats. Remember that Disney, Netflix and so many others lately aren't trying to make movies that are decently good and make sense, they're pushing all this content to further alienate people from having valid opinions about anything. Although it is definitely not valid for actual dumb racists to bend it to their agenda, you gotta admit that the latter just needs an excuse to answer every logical argument by labeling those who don't agree with film as racist/bigot/sexist all that BS. The new Little Mermaid since its fiction, I get it, you can fantasize and be creative as much as you want, but there is still historical significance to it but not for reasons for the sake of supposed "gate-keeping". What if we took a fictional character that was historically African or black and replaced it with a white one or some other race? I'm pretty sure noone would be happy about that. This isn't the Cleopatra film coming out that is obviously historically and morally wrong, but I keep seeing a toxic pattern where these loopholes keeping existing and people making films like these don't have the best interest in mind at all. Pandering pockets keep getting filled up so long as bringing chaos and social unrest is how they aim to maximize profits as they could care less about who their true audience is. I'm refusing to watch not because I want a white mermaid instead of a black one, but because its always going to fall into the same controversial trap and divide people than experiencing genuine enjoyment.

I'm about to have people come for me but I don't care, why can't we have original stories instead of recycled black versions? To me it's like saying; hey, I'm eating hamburger but I noticed you don't have any so let me take the chewed up meat out of my mouth and make you a sandwich on fresh bread. I don't want a 'recycled/used' character. I want something original.

As a east asian, i didn't give the little mermaid a go because I found disney's move to change the race kind of racist. The fact that they had to race swap a character from an original storyline, gives me an impression that black people don't deserve their own story line and they had to piggy back on someone else's story just so disney can fulfil a " quota", which is extremely distasful IMO.

@Alec Pure the original says otherwise with only white mermaids. I mean, if you are fine, piggy backing on white stories go ahead. Be more prideful of your own people. Kind of ironic that I'm not even black, but I'm pushing for more unique black representation stories, where as you, who push for a reskin of stories that don't belong to you in the first place. That's so weird.
