I have been watching your videos for sometime and I am glad that you have done some research on our history. As a Tibetan, I think it’s my duty to explain about my culture. It might look odd for westerns to see grown adults kissing a child and touching their forehead. This is normal for us Tibetans and it is part of our culture. It is common for kids to touch forehead and kiss on lips with their grandparents. I remember my grandparents chewing food and feeding me food from their mouth. Tibetan grandparents say ‘che le sa’ which means eat my tongue. This is to tease the kid if they want to eat the tongue as well. Dalai Lama misspoke and wasn’t meant to say suck. His English isn’t that good. He was being funny and teasing the kid.

First off fucken happy that y’all love our film reviews MAKES ME HAPPY!!! BUT For those that are asking a review of BEEF and wondering why there isn’t one. The show just dropped not too long ago, and i haven’t watched it all the way through. You need to wait a bit. Anybody that does a review of a film or TV show without sitting on it and dissecting it trying to do it, to be the first. I’ve done relatively quick turnarounds for shows but give us a bit. I can’t write and think of insight on something I’ve seen once! Every review you have seen, we took time to sit and think about which allows for us to talk about shows for 1-2 hours. What we like and dislike. So you will not be getting that review anytime soon so be patient please 🙏

I am Tibetan myself! In my culture, it is a specific common practice for elders to tease young children by joking, "suck my tongue now" as a way to deter cheeky children from pestering elders. The word "suck" in the Tibetan language is "jhip", not a word that is sexualized the way it is in the western world. These major foreign media are portraying clips without the full context, while judging others' culture, just be it differs from their own. Even though this video appeared 2 months after the occurrence, there is no attempt to get a comment from the parent or the child (btw the parents have released an official statement, that they didn't feel like it was a problematic issue). The reason why the Tibetan exile diaspora is thriving is because the world wanted to cash in on the Dalai Lama for DECADES. And now you turn on him because of clickbait strategies looking for the next viral thing. Those who do not pause of reflect and formulate their own thoughts about this issue are truly those who have no skin in the game, because you do not know what it is to be exiled, to be robbed of your own land, your language and your way of life.

I understand now that to apologize in Buddhism is to express one's recognition of and sorrow for having hurt another and to heal some of the hurt we may have caused. I always found it weird when parents kiss their kids on the lips, but I learnt to accept it as a cultural thing in the West. I look at this Dalai Lama situation the same way. It is because he is a religious leader that people are associating him with the actions of Catholic Priests. Don't project the short comings of one religion onto other ones.

Thank u dear friend. As a Tibetan, I can express that there is so much hurt in our community due to this misinformation. The small tailored video clip was broadcasted by the media only focusing on the ‘suck my tongue’ part, which in Tibetan has no sexual connotation whatsoever, & bc the Dalai Lama’s English is not good, it was not translated properly to the hyper-sexualized West..& in fact, if the media actually cared about the whole video then you’d see that the boy’s parents were sitting next to the Dalai Lama smiling and after the event, both parents as well as the boy expressed joy over the occasion. This is all in the public domain. I hope this sheds some light. Also, the Chinese have been after the Dalai Lama for the past 60 years, calling him ‘demon’ & all sort of names..so I wonder how the small tailored video clip of the event that actually took in February suddenly popped up everywhere..❤

And I've seen people do, nothing. I've seen people fight and nothing happens. Ive seen POLITICANS just take the shootings and advocate opposing policy. And it's at the point where, it's normalized. Now that I don't care, but I say this as respectfully as possible but it's impossible for me to keep caring all the time.

I think it still is important to be critical in this kind of situations as a tibetan, even with H.H. the Dalai Lama. As a tibetan myself born and raised in the West I grew up with tibetan as well as western traditions and culture and I can see and understand that these words and actions from H.H. were taken the way it happend. Even I felt strange seeing and heering that from him. As a public figure, H.H. should be aware, how the world could percive his actions and words. This critique in my opinion is absolutly fair. But I do belive that his actions weren't done with bad intentions. I'm thankful that you did some research about that subject David, but there is also another tibetan tradition which directly translates in "eat my tongue" which I belive is what H.H. actually wanted to say and makes much more sense than the other tradition (Which doesn't sound much better tbh out of context). This tibetan phrase originates in the region where H.H. was from, the Amdo region. According to a sorce, quote:"...old grandparents not only give a pop kiss to the small children, but also give a small candy or piece of food to children from their mouths- directly mouth to mouth. ... After the elder gives a pop kiss and a candy, since there is nothing left to give, they will say the phrase" Ok, now 'eat my tongue'" (not 'suck', as His Holiness misspoke due to his less proficient English). The Tibetan phrase is "Che le sa". They say that as in "I've given you all my love and the candy so that's it- all that's left to do is eat my tongue." And it is a playful thing that the children know." endquote. And there, I belive, lies the problem in H.H. actions. This kid did not know this tradition and it didn't happen in the culture and region H.H. was from. That's why I would say that his actions do seem inappropriate in the context it all happend, but I would still argue that he didn't do it with ill intent. I had the honor to meet H.H. as a kid on a few ocasions and allways felt so much compassion and benevolence from him and never any sexual desires or urges. Of course this is just my viewpoint and in history there were other cases where seemingly good ppl turned out to be bad. But in H.H. case, I do belive H.H. didn't had any ill intent during this interaction. And in the end, David is a comedian at heart and making jokes about diffrent topics. It's what I've known him since the times he roasted ppl on this channel and made skits. At least he put in some effort by doing some research, not like other ppl and media outlets which just wanted to be first with the news. I think we shouldn't excuse stuff but offer another perspective that helps to understand where it all came from and hope to come to a mutual understanding. It also hurt me to hear David and Ed, ppl which opinion I usually do align with and like to listen to, making pedophile jokes about the Dalai Lama, but like in the case of H.H. I belive it's important to stay calm and analize the situation in a critical way and not let only our emotions do the talking, especially when it comes to sensitive topics like this.

Please do not call the Dalai Lama a pedophile. Do your due diligence and research. You only researched and showed the sticking out the tongue part but forgot to research the suck my tongue comment. Just because you want to hyper sexualize situations because you’re so dam jaded from pastors fucking little boys/ kids. He doesn’t need you to validate the situation to be quite honest, because there’s a world difference between his holiness and y’all regular people. Learn different cultural customs/ traditions/ social histories before letting you emotions jump the gun. Esp this Ed guy. Speak facts and not unnecessary belittling of others when you clearly don’t know ALL the facts.

If someone takes a picture of you with a minor naked in a korean /japanese bathhouse where as you and i know is normal for the culture right ( people as long as same gender adults or children go naked share the bathhouse )and that picture goes viral on the social media and people starts calling you a pedophile and accuse you of indulging in sex with a minor. Do you think theres going to be a negative reaction to it . Yes! People who dont know the culture will fall prey to it and your reputation will gone down in drain. Thats the same scenario here, people who dont know the culture will say all sorts of things but who knows will come to your defend.. thats why its important to have an open mind and dont judge people . Look at the unedited video of hh with the child, study the audience's reaction. No we are not brain washed .. we just know how to accept differences in culture..

My friend, I appreciate your recognition of Tibet as a distinct entity with its own culture and identity, essentially a nation. I also commend you for taking the time to research on Dalai Lama, Buddhism and what not. However, I want to emphasize that thorough research is crucial, doing half-assed research won’t clear the confusion in this matter just like merely going to a gym won’t get you a six pack. In your mention of Buddhism, I think it's important to highlight the concept of detached love. Detached love is a type of love that is free from attachment and expectations, characterized by loving purely for the sake of loving, without clinging to the object of affection or becoming possessive. It is closely associated with the Buddhist concept of metta, or loving-kindness, which involves cultivating a pure and unconditional love for all beings, without discrimination or bias. So, where I am getting at is that the Dalai Lama has devoted his life to practicing Buddhism and promoting values of world peace, love, and compassion. It is essential to recognize in this matter that his intentions are pure and not driven by any lustful desires. Knowing about something is one thing, and understanding it is even better. But practicing it is a whole other level that you and I may not fully comprehend. (P.S Buddhist believes in emptiness not nothingness)

But as someone who grew up Tibetan Buddhist. I gotta say my friends, family; and I are all pretty disgusted and disappointed in the Dalai Lama’s actions in that video. I’ve talked to my other Tibetans friend about this and they also felt that what he did was not good at all. It’s honestly a bad look for Buddhists around the world. Seeing you and Ed attempt to understand Tibetan Buddhist history, culture and what the Dalai Lama and reincarnation is. Was so funny for me to watch, and personally I don’t take any offense to the jokes, unlike others in the comments. That shit was hella funny to me 😂

Specially this is about his holiness our leader who is almost 90 yrs old who has given his whole life to our people and to world peace After two months of this event this edited video from media surfaced and you are thinking that media is showing you the real story I think you are blindly trusting them

Designs were loud af in a time anime was not cool, you'd just get clowned on if you wore it past elementary school. Which is what drove me to make my own anime merch for myself. Something small, subtle but quality and cool in its own merit, before the association to w.e. show.

You or anyone has a right to criticize or joke about Dalai Lama. It would be unpleasant but I’m all for free speech as long as it doesn’t entice violence. We understand the concern and reaction of people after watching the video is coming from the goodness of their heart. We are not defending pedophilia, we don’t want our kids or anyone’s to be victims of sexual abuse. We are protesting against the unjust judgment being passed on Dalai Lama based on people’s emotions and perceptions after watching the edited video clips. Tibetans and followers of Dalai Lama asking people to watch the complete video and consider cultural differences of Tibetans with theirs before passing any judgement doesn’t mean they are justifying pedophilia. They are not blind followers. Millions of Tibetans all over the world who are deeply hurt and are passionately protesting against the defamation of their spiritual leader. Are they all brainwashed ….don’t they have enough intellect to understand or know when a child is being molested. I’m not saying this is what you think of us. People are saying how can anyone defend a child molester. Well! an actual child molester can..not a good joke, I know. It’s just that I’m baffled at how easily people can pass a judgment by watching 10 seconds edited video clip without even watching the complete video. Huge respect to you for at least doing your research, putting an effort to study Tibetan culture and traditions and then coming up with your own conclusion. I might not agree with you but I do respect your sincerity. Keep hustling brother.

Western outlook : looks at a banana , already has an sexual interpretation. Doesnt even spare an innocent fruit. So we cant really expect much from people whose thoughts are so hypersexualized. They just cannot fathom that there are still cultures where the gestures such as kiss is regarded purely out of love and care. Im sure there are phrases used in western world if translated in tibetan is going to come out really weird and would not make sense . So is the other way around. The audiences in the said video understood what it meant, the boy and the mother had nothing but good things to say about his holiness but western media is out there to force their idea that the child is abused.. thats what they do all the time .. tries to dominate and belittle minority groups whose voices dont matter. They just need the 💰 money , a clickbait 10 sec video and there you go someones reputation is tarnished ..

What does the individual have to do with the whole culture? You may idolize the Dalai Lama but it doesn’t mean he is free of criticism and jokes. Dalai Lama apologized for his behavior himself and did not excuse it as a cultural reason per his own sources. That’s not from the media that’s from himself? He said he was joking and teasing. Which people are allowed to feel it as inappropriate. People in your culture found it odd and inappropriate as well so it wasn’t this black and white situation. As mentioned in the pod in passing but here are the specifics: “In response to the incident, prominent Delhi-based child rights group, Haq: Center for Child Rights, told CNN in a statement it condemns "all form of child abuse." It added: "Some news refers to Tibetan culture about showing tongue, but this video is certainly not about any cultural expression and even if it is, such cultural expressions are not acceptable." Also I did the due diligence explaining what the sticking out of the tongue is about and explained how far fetched it is to tease a kid and tell them to suck it. If it was the Tongue sticking out as a greeting then whatever. The way he teased the child was inappropriate especially as a man form a global platform. Curious, What did the media say about it that was false? I saw the video, read about the cultural backing about why he thought it was ok and found that it doesn’t add up. That is all. People criticize Christians everyday and our leaders and some of them rightfully so! yet I do not stand by them if they do inappropriate things. A man Is NOT the religion or culture. He is just a man.

@@tashinamgyal7405appreciate you and thank you for responding :) but here’s my take on that. People who are seen as religious figures historically have notably used their power to take advantage of people. People who were WILLING and HAPPY because of who they are. By your logic when or if you have a child and your preteen child said “I consented with an adult to physically kiss and touch me and YOU should be ok with it because I love him and I was happy” are you ok with it? Or do we take into consideration the crazy power dynamic an adult has over a child and not JUST an adult but a man who is considered a HOLY FIGURE. That is the problem. I am religious but not everyone shares in my religion. My leaders have been trash and have some terrible things and I don’t stand by them when they are wrong. His holiness agreed that he was inappropriate and wrong so why are we defending him when he agrees it was inappropriate? To defend your culture and religion is admirable so respect. BUT When I speak up about Christian figures who have done weird things on this pod NONE of you stood up for it? You laughed! You agreed! You criticized! But now that it’s yours, you can’t see the flaws or allow others to joke about it because it’s personal to you? So is Christianity, so what moral grounds are you standing on? I get i and I understand but I’m sorry this is not it for me.

You havent even researched on the full event, forget about learning how His Holiness is living his whole life for. Its so wrong of you. You said why he was looking at him for long, it could be he was praying, why does everything has to be negative. You guys are looking at from such a negative way that everything you see is negative.
