Little Joey: A Baby Chimp Story

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Baby chimpanzee Little Joey is nearing 3 years old. In this segment, we catch up and see how he's doing. After a death-defying start to life the littlest of chimpanzees at Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage, affectionately aka LJ is becoming a rambunctious adventurous apes. He has survived everything thrown at him, often because of the 24/7 hands-on, expert care of Chimfunshi’s incredible veterinarian Thalita Calvi.
Vet Calvi and the staff at Chimfunshi care for more than 130 chimpanzees, plus many other animals on the property. Please learn more about their critical work and donate here ➜ www.chimfunshiUSA.org

A great story of Joey survival. He was so sick and now seeing him with mom in the wild makes my heart rejoice. The lady who cared for him is one in a million care giver. She has done a wonderful job. I have watched him all thru his recovery. Good job people! God will bless you for your efforts.

I just love how chimps, gorillas, and orang-utans are all so gentle and loving with their babies - a bit different to the macaques.

IKR the way the parents treat their offspring Is so much more gentle and the offspring are not as needy, wanting to nurse 24/7 and become independent earlier. I say independent buy what I mean is tgey aren't nursing 24/7 and tgey give mom a break and actually let her eat for 2 mins and not throwing a tantrum every 2-3 mins

@@TMS-pj7fpwhat?? You obviously do not actually know very much about primates. Firstly, ape moms are NOT always gentle with their infants ass you claim and their babies most certainly do tend to be just as if not more clingy ND demanding as any baby macaque is!! In addition to that macaque moms all have very unique personalities as well as parenting styles (just as apes, including humans, do). Some macaque moms are very tolerant, some permissive, some more affectionate and playful, some more disciplinarians, some more restrictive, some more patient...there are all different types and on averge most fall somewhere in the middle of the continuum. There ares some mothers, of both apes and monkeys who are actually abusive. The numbers tends to be about 10%, the same as in humans. There had been a lot of research done on abusive moms especially regarding macaques. It tends to run in familiies and is the tendency to be abusive is often passed down from mother to daughters. There are very specific behaviors that are seen that classify moms as abusive. You are basing your opinions about macaques on what you see in these videos on youtube that these VOs post in hopes of getting views. They are far more likely to post videos of moms who are mistreating their infant than ones that are more "boring" where a mom is tending to her baby properly. This presents a very skewed view of how macaques usually treat their offspring and it is totally wrong.

Why do all good things have to come to an end? This was one of the most heartwarming set of videos i've seen! Thank you so much for sharing longer ones. They were fantastic. From the very first day with Thalita, from the way she held him stradling her arm like his own mother would, to the gentle tummy rubs. You just knew he was in great loving care. He was so tiny but had good lungs!! His little cry got me hooked! As they grow older, they're not as vocal. Unless somethings going on that's threatening, a disaggrement, a snake etc...they mainly communicate through body language, eyes or softer grunts. I don't wish anything to happen to them of course, i just wish they would't stop vocalizing. It must be for the troops safety. I love all there names starting with little and our star "Little Joey!" I've always thought they stayed smaller longer and kept their baby faces. I just love 'em to bits and wish their vocal chords would allow them to speak. Can you imagine the tales they could tell us!!!! Thanks again! I love that whole sweet 'LITTLE" family (pun intended)Theyre all darlings!!🐵💜👍💙✌

I have been thinking a lot about the much bigger picture and would love to help with chimpanzees here in the United States. Hopefully I will find my calling soon! I hope you have a blessed day! @@carolinawestern3875 So what you're saying is....they should have left Joey as a newborn to fend for himself without professional intervention? How about we just kill all the newborn chimps....wipe-out the entire species... thus, not having to worry about future attacks on children and adults? Get real....if it weren't for man destroying much/most of their natural habitat forcing groups to live in close proximity to one another...chimps might not be so darn aggressive out of anxiety and frustration. Think about that. It's man who will bring their demise.

People that work with chimps, monkeys, orangutan's, ect. have the best jobs in the world 🥰! If I could care for 1 without endangering it and it being rejected in the wild 😟, I'd have 1! But just because they're cute (and they're absolutely amazing, and beautiful creatures 😍) gives us absolutely NO right to domesticate them and keep them from their home's, family's, and natural environment 😢! People should just leave them be, unless they need to be messed with. So Thank You guys for being their 👼 👼, while at the same time letting them remain with their own specie's and in their own environment! It's sad that places like this HAVE to exist because humans can't leave them be, and stick to just co-existing with them from a distance! 😘😘

At 7:34 the baby is the first to be really awake from sedation and earlier the mother was the first to be sedated. I imagine this is because if the mother woke up first and found her baby unable to fully wake up or worse, not yet able to respond to her then the mother would react very badly. She might endanger the workers and the baby by shaking or hitting it to try to get a response. It's details like this which reveal the level of skill and knowledge to do this job.
