1984 I'm on my honda XL trail bike the tide is in. Just. I decide to ride over with my legs hanging over the handle bars and my girlfriend is kneeling on the seat. So we're high up away from the water. A huge American SUV decides to follow us over. It got washed out. I think the engine hydrolocked and was ruined as the SUV was towed off the island and was parked at the garage at Seahouses for months afterwards. For anyone who hasn't been.. the spring tides cover the causeway faster than a man can run across to the island from the mainland. 😂 So don't ignore the warning signs.

I holidayed there every year as a small child from 1968-72. To this day it’s the only tide I’ve seen that comes in relentlessly (no backwash no back and forth it just flows in without stopping)

Don't know if you've been but Holy Island is one of the best places to visit in England. Or more specific that entire part of the coastline. It's also great to watch the sea cover the road. It happens quicker than you think, if you've not seen it before. Dawdle speed.

It would be interesting to know how the 26 December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami affected the tides. In Cape Town I hiked to and spent the day at my favourite spot on the coast, one where I had been going for 19 years, but on that day there was no tide, the sea remained relatively flat and stable the entire day. Maybe check with the local Hydrographic office, their tide gauge should show the actual tide at Holy Island that day.

Do they block off the road at a certain time everyday?

Hello. No the road does not officially get blocked off. The rising tide takes care of that task twice a day. It is then left to Personal Responsibility or User Stupidity if a driver, rider or walker wants to try and outrun the incoming tide.

When the water made it to the road you were traveling at dawdle speed. You had time to stop take a picture before have to move a step or two alone the road.
