75 000 h.p. The Biggest Nuclear Icebreaker

For licensing and collabs: timelab.pro/?...
Our magic LUTs and presets for color grading: timelab.pro/presets?...
This video was shot in the Arctic Ocean in March 2018. For 7 days our crew passed through the Barents Sea to Karsky around the Novaya Zemlya archipelago on the nuclear icebreaker Yamal - we saw the northern lights and polar bears, watched the ships stuck in the ice being towed, and were very cold.
In the video you can see two Russian icebreakers - “50 Years of Victory” and “Yamal” with a capacity of 75,000 horsepower and a distinctive shark mouth, which appeared on it in 1994 during one of the children's humanitarian programs. According to legend, someone suggested drawing a smiling shark mouth on the nose to make it more fun for children. At present, Russia has the only nuclear-powered icebreaker fleet in the world. They are used to provide wiring ships in the ices of the Northern Sea Route in the freezing ports of the Russian Federation, research expeditions, rescue operations and tourist cruises.
In addition to the extreme weather conditions, the shooting was complicated by the fact that the icebreaker was always in motion. And if the drone was flying over the radar tower, the recording file was damaged.

I had the great honor to work on that ship for four summers, and the ship was the love of my life if you could love an icebreaker to your heart's core. It was magical--the scenery, the ice--the animals we saw and the crew who, some of who have remained my friends to this very day. I'll never forget I/B Yamal and she will be in my heart as the reigning queen of all ships I've worked on.

These icebreakers are the result of Soviet designers and engineers. I talked to the person responsible for the design now. They do colossal work, including taking up such projects again after a long break (since Soviet times). I've been lucky to have a cruise on one of these icebreakers before. Are you aware that over the past few years, 3 more icebreakers of the new series have been put into operation. They are much larger and more powerful than those in the video. One more was launched in November 2022.

The ships enter the port only for loading and unloading, repair or replenishment. The icebreaker is not designed for industrial power generation, it does not have special equipment for this, and if, it is not designed for this. For such tasks, Russia is building special floating power plants that are specifically designed for industrial electricity production. Learn materiel and you will look at least not stupid. Main reason for this extra-quality picture is an extremely dry air. All the water at this temperature crystallized and settled. Also, there is no distortion from sunlight and infrared radiation, these are ideal conditions for such a stunning picture. Despite the poor lighting, due to the high coefficient of light reflection from this virgin snow cover, the illumination is sufficient. Science beatch :D
