Lighting SwitchGear - First EV Raptor

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This week we take a look at what most raptors owners consider the worst thing ever. The new Lightning Switchgear demo vehicle. I dig it, check out the video for details why.

    Lightning is technically the best selling EV truck 🤷‍♂️. I personally wanted a lightning, but not with the SEA combo port. The public charging network is awful and unreliable and EV owners know it so most are waiting for Ford and the other OEMs to adopt the Tesla charge port. That’s coming later this year. When that happens and you have native access to the Tesla surcharges network, it will change EV sales again and they will trend up again. Reason I say this is because no one wants a car with outdated tech. And the SEA combo charger in them now is obsolete now when most of the manufacturers announced they will be adopting Tesla charge ports last year

    Technically the best selling EV truck?? That’s really a BS statement. Technically you’re correct but at the same time the market is all but nonexistent when compared to internal combustion powered trucks. I have lightnings at work, the company put a few in place to try out. They have diesel webasto heaters to keep the cabs warm to try to save on mileage. The trucks are junk, as a truck. If you put anything in them, pull a trailer, anything a truck is made to do, they are junk. If you want to daily drive it back ad forth from work with just you in it, great. Seems like a high price point for what you get. You sound like a nerd fan boy to me. Fords loss on ev’s is around 3 billion right now isn’t it? How much of that is subsidized by your and my federal tax dollar? Disappointing.

    90% of trucks don’t get used as a trucks 🤷‍♂️. They don’t tow, they don’t carry heavy loads, they get used as daily’s. EVs batteries don’t have the range to tow today and won’t be able to replace tow rigs until there is major advancements in battery tech. Now as for the Ford Loss argument, that’s total BS. Ford has been cutting production of all its vehicles. Not just EVs, because no one is buying. Car prices and interest rates are too high. Only EV production cuts make the news and you’re falling for it. If Ford was not making money they would immediately stop production all together. I wonder why they haven’t ? Ford trucks are also too expensive and don’t qualify for any incentives so what government is funding them? Now you already restored to insults so I know what’s next here. A insult latent tantrum is coming. 🤣

    @@KeepItDirtyOffRoad Where I live, trucks are used as trucks, currently they all have snow plows hanging off the front of them. Heck my raptor is hooked to a trailer as I type. People can’t afford to operate a truck and not use it as a truck in my neck of the woods. Regarding the losses, this is a direct snip from one of many articles that pop up when I search Ford EV losses. “This means that Ford lost around $36,000 for every electric vehicle it sold in the quarter, surpassing its estimated $32,350 loss per EV in the second quarter. For the entire year, the carmaker expects a full-year loss of $4.5 billion for its EV unit. Why is that, though? Ford said the Q3 loss is "attributable to continued investment in next-generation EVs and challenging market dynamics." Regarding the latter, the carmaker noted that "many North American customers interested in buying EVs are unwilling to pay premiums for them over gas or hybrid vehicles." This puts pressure on EV prices and profitability, according to Ford.” I still think you’re a nerd fan boy of evs. It’s not a good or bad thing, if you are, why not embrace it? Typical talk, oh those batteries, boy are they going to be something, someday.

    I love this SwitchGear. I think it looks amazing and will out perform everything except for the Raptor R. I agree with you on most things in your “hater section”. I personally think that EVs are a virtue signal that don’t do nearly as much good as people think, if you read the studies. That being said EVs will and are far out performing gas vehicles. Like most things in life I think the future lays in the middle and is more of a hybrid of gas and EVs, pun intended. Hybrid trucks like the power boost F150 show that you can bring EV performance and gas mileage and gas station convenience together. Smaller/Bigger cylinder with bigger batteries and motors will most likely be our future. Oh and everything will have a turbo. Like they already do. What do you think?

  • @KeepItDirtyOffRoad

    @KeepItDirtyOffRoad

    5 ай бұрын

    I like the idea of hybrid and I think it’s a necessary step that most people will accept. A hybrid raptor would be awesome for example. Specially for camping and extended off grid trips. But I’m also for a quicker change to EVs. And my reason is a different that you may think. I want more EVs so that the V8 don’t die. EVs means bigger credits for the manufacturers. Tax penalties is what’s killing V8 engine development right now. Companies loose money on every v8 car they make because of them. it would suck for the R and Mustang or the corvette to not have a V8. And if EVs take off, that means more credits so the v8 can still be made. Ford has already announced that they will keep making the v8 Mustang. And only reason they can do that is because of the EVs and hybrids they are making. I don’t want everything hybridized or turbo charged. Nothing like a good v8 and hope EV adoption helps keep them around longer.

Own V8, diesel, and long travel UTV too. One thing I noticed immediately that was not really thinking about is the regenerative braking on steep downhill with loose wet rock of all sizes is a game changer in terms of how well it controls the vehicle from slipping and sliding around. Would be nice to see something with more true off road long travel suspension so all for the SwitchGear.

    Yeah it does, so does running an engine. My v8 gets heat soaked in anything over 110 degrees and can’t run as hard. EVs have cooling systems for the batteries and can handle high heat better than engines can. So will they generate heat? Yes. Will we need better cooling? Of course, but so does our engine counterparts when it gets hot.

    I love the style of that truck but the only problem for my of the ev is that here in the Midwest in winter you see the tesla with a frozen battery and then the superchargers get frozen

  • @KeepItDirtyOffRoad

    @KeepItDirtyOffRoad

    5 ай бұрын

    I remember seeing the articles and news about the frozen cars that could not charge in Chicago and it honestly pissed me off. What happened was a few drivers stranded themselves due to poor planning on their part. Superchargers literally only have 2 moving parts, the release mechanism for the cord and a fan with the power module. If those froze then so would a gas station pump and it would not take much to get them loose. And a EV battery has no moving parts. It’s solid batteries and a cooling system. The cooling system uses radiator fluid that can’t freeze under normal conditions. Door latches and all that can freeze, but again does not take much to unfreeze them and a regular car would be impacted in the same way. So the whole story was BS and now people think EVs can’t handle the cold. 🤦‍♂️. EVs don’t even need an engine block heater to run in the cold. It’s the number one car in Norway and they are farther north than you guys and get worse cold spells than you guys. But you don’t hear about them being stranded up there. So annoying man. Don’t fall for the BS.

    Cool concept but EV trucks aren’t ready for weekend warriors. Range will be terrible. Heard your argument above for it but I think you’ll find that it will be much worse than anticipated. Also, I think there will be overheating issues with the motors. Rivian has had small issues with it. Maybe half day trips but how many of those before one of the motors shits the bed. Not like pulling over and waiting for your gas truck to cool down and adding coolant. Then being able to limp it home. Battery takes off and you’re toast. Great for the man who wants to show it off but I don’t think it will be good for hard use.

  • @KeepItDirtyOffRoad

    @KeepItDirtyOffRoad

    You may be right on the range front. Bigger tires and more weight have a huge impact on range. But that can also be fixed with time. New battery tech is coming with more power density for less cost. But the cooling is not as much of a worry for me. I’ve never had any of my EVs overheat. Even in pretty hot temps. Offroad that could change but it depends on what you’re doing. I could see rock crawling on a hot day being a problem due to airflow on the EV radiators. But that’s a problem for gas engines too. But the off-roading that I do, I don’t think it will be as much of a problem. But we don’t really know. No one doing extended high speed offroad runs with them yet. Only ones I know of are hitting Glamis in short bursts. Everyone is just “overlanding” EVs right now. Going slow. Need someone to beat them up and test to the extreme

    I like Von Gittin Jr's trucks. He worked with Kibbetech on the Ultimate Fun Haver F-150 and the Fun Runner Ranger. So if Kibbetech was involved in designing the suspension of Switchgear then it will work great and give the batteries a gentle ride. Even if this truck is only a concept or limited production it is a important transition vehicle. You can't force people to give up internal combustion vehicles, but if they build performance electric vehicles like this then some people will want to drive or own it. Extreme E electric off-road racing is already testing electric vehicles (ODYSSEY 21 550bhp) in harsh conditions, charging with portable hydrogen stations, tires made from dandelions, and building the body from natural flax fibre which is a renewable resource. kzread.info/dash/bejne/oKRmkpKgdsWpltY.htmlsi=XBrX8ZZJf1QnYCMf

I had one specifically loose his cool and said some pretty racist and vile things because he could not hold a conversation with me on the subject after I posted I liked the truck. So to me this is an opportunity to dispel some myths. I’m glad you’re on the side of more EVs. I’m a big fan of them. But just give this video some time and you’ll see all the stupid comments come on the subject. Already have 1 ignorant comment already on the video and many more will come

    Very true. That’s why I think a raptor with a Tesla performance motor center mounted would be so wild. No need for a transfer case or anything. Simplify the design and load the truck up with batteries but limit it to about 7500 lbs evenly spread and you have a really fun truck.

That said, I think Mark was spot not on the rear suspension, if someone can figure out to put a solid axle at the back and figure out ways for that to tuck in and achieve the long travel numbers. Then there is no stopping this….. it will tear everything apart!!!

    If a gas truck uses more energy in the dirt, so, would the electric truck use more energy in the dirt too? Your ranges don't seem to be apples to apples. I believe you used the same on-road range for the electric truck. I think real world energy usage for the electric would have to be tested. Cool looking truck with all the graphics. I woulder what it would look like with a retail paint job.

  • @KeepItDirtyOffRoad

    @KeepItDirtyOffRoad

    No, energy usage is very different between EVs and gas engines. For example generation heat for the cabin takes a ton of energy away from EVs while gas engines heat is a byproduct. EVs also don’t waste power at idle like gas engines do. And they generate power on all downhill sections or when ever you let off the gas pedal. EV off-roading would be very different. It would be more like driving a manual transmission. So it would be constantly regenerating power but also the motors would always be engaged providing better control offroad. No one has offroaded an EV like a raptor so we don’t know what kind of range impact it can have. No EV could take the speeds and abuse until this truck. So we will see what’s possible once this starts to hit the trails

    Lighting is still the best selling truck right now. But there are 3 factors limiting it sales. 1st is price. It’s too expensive. 90k trucks don’t make sense to most people. 2. Public charging network is crap and people waiting for Ford to switch over to the Tesla charger. 3. Dumb misconceptions. The lighting is better for 90% of truck owners use cases than their gas counterparts. But there is a lot of misconceptions on EVs that are propagated out there that stops most buyers. Same thing happened when we switched from carbureted to fuel injection, when electricity was first intruded in peoples homes. People are resistant to change 🤷‍♂️

    @@KeepItDirtyOffRoad as far as the Lightning being the best selling truck, I don't find that accurate at all. Maybe it might be true out where you are, but here in St Louis, there are very few on the roads here. I see more Rivian R1T's on the roads than Lightnings. When Lightnings first hit the market I would see a couple quite consistently. I still stand that as far as the on road use, my Gen 2 will get better range than the Switchgear. Off road you may be right about that case, but we really won't know unless they take it out on a run like you guys do.

  • @KeepItDirtyOffRoad

    Yeah, ford released the numbers and they basically can produce trucks by a big factor over what rivian can do. Ford has put more on the road in 1 year than rivian has been able to in the same period. I don’t notice them much either, but that’s because they blend in so well. If you don’t look closely, it’s just another f-150. But yeah, we need to test these in the real world to see how they hold up and confirm the range. Cybertruck is a great example. Tesla “leaked” so many videos of the trucks running the trails and boasted its capabilities. But in the real world, the few out there have shown some major issues with the Tesla traction control being too slow to find traction and the trucks keep getting stuck on minor stuff. I’m not convinced the cybertruck will be as good offroad as the Rivian or what even the Lighting can do. To me it feels like a minivan with big tires.

    @@KeepItDirtyOffRoad the one thing that sticks out about Lightning to me is the rear drive train/suspension on the truck. It’s bulky and a very noticeable difference between a normal F150 and the Lightning. That’s the one part about the truck I could see being an issue off road over a normal F150/Raptor. But it does look like they might have addressed that issue from the pictures and video we have seen so far. Getting a close look at the Switchgear in person would definitely answer that question of how they did it. As far as Rivian goes, it’s a nice truck. I like the pass through port on it and could see how it can be used for different things. I got to sit in one last year and after that I felt like it was very similar to the GMC Canyon I had at that time. If I didn’t need and love how the F150 is on the interior, I would be more ok with a Rivian or a mid size truck. If I get to talk to one of the guys that owns one around here I will ask the, how they like it etc. I do still feel like the EV market for some reason is a niche at this point.

    Yeah. That rear motor is definitely low still. The 37s help a bit I think here. Maybe mounting it higher is switching to a center mounted motor under the cab with a traditional axle may work better for off-roading. I feel the same about the Rivian. I like the looks and functionality. Just hate the price.

    Two important things you’re missing about EV’s. The first thing is insurance. EV’s are more expensive to insure. Insurance companies will total an EV out rather than repair an EV with suspected battery cell damage. In essence EV’s are essentially throw away vehicles. The second thing is lithium batteries are extremely toxic the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has done extensive research on the dangers of Lithium Ion Batteries from toxic gases emitted to sudden explosions that have occurred with battery failure. I have gone to dozens of fires caused by Lithium Ion battery failure. Everything from house fires, vehicle fires on the street. to fires in garbage trucks caused by people throwing away batteries that explode due to compression. Trust me, you do not want to be in that vehicle if a battery cell fails that was caused by hard trail driving. It will be like sitting in a grenade

  • @KeepItDirtyOffRoad

    The insurance market is still catching up on EVe and since there is limited experienced repair shops and options right now, everything is going to be expensive. Insurance will eventually come down. As for the batteries that’s a BS argument and you know it. If the same happened to gas it would be just as bad if not worse. There are more gas car fires everyday than battery fires. Just as toxic, happens way more often, but none make the news. Why? Because we know how to deal with car fires. Still catching up with how to deal with EV fires. If we follow your logic then we should not use cell phones, laptops, tablets. Anything with a modern battery. Come on man. You going to put down your phone because of the lithium battery argument? It may catch fire!

So for this power train, this is a good step forward. It’s starting out much like the gen1 did. But I have a feeling you’re the type that will dismiss this truck just because it’s electric. Yet forgetting some of the biggest well known gear heads helped commission this truck. Both Von and Ken block are big fans of electrification. Before his passing Ken block had already done 2 big releases of EV vehicles. One with ford and one with Audi.
