Lightbar Highlight: Lectric Lights Ranger

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is a video of Lectric Lights Ranger lightbar, that first in the market in 1978. It features two strobe lights, and 4 flashers. The strobe lights are not on a centralized power supply, so their flash pattern is randomized, and not in-sync with each other in any way.
This bar has an interesting internal setup for the strobes. While It has the typical cylindrical flutes diffusion like you'd see in a Strobehawk or Whelen 80, it also has a parabolic lens on the front, that tightens the beam on the front side, making it more direct, and therefore brighter. Kind of a weird design, and its' lack of quality is probably what led to it's short lifespan.

Thanks! I've considered doing an "After Dark" series of videos, with random videos of my bars in a dark setting. Stay tuned to see if that happens!! :)

They were very rare, and didn't last long..... used primarily in Texas, with few other locations nationwide.

@@AdamsLights There was this old Clark forklift among the then newer Toyotas that had a North American rotator on it. Saw that over the LL’s. Really helped in the dark spaces because the bosses demanded everyone ship and receive at full throttle. Don’t know how many people got injured before it was finally slowed down.

GOOOOOD Luck. They were not very popular outside of Texas, so there wasn't a ton of them to begin with. This one had a literal bird's nest in it when I got it.

Why are strobes so hard to see?

  • @AdamsLights

It has to do with the frame-rate of the recording. For example.... let's take exactly one second of time, and zoom way in on that. My video camera captures video at a frame rate of 30 frames-per-second (FPS)... that means that in that one second, it takes 30 individual 'pictures'.... it stitches those frames together every second, to create motion video. The flash of a strobe can be as fast as 1/100th of a second.... which is considerably faster than the 30 FPS shutter speed. That essentially means that the strobe is most likely flashing BETWEEN the 30 'pictures' the camera takes each second. Now, not all strobes flash that fast obviously, and they are fairly inconsistent as well.... that's why the final result looks like a haphazard collection of random looking flashes. Sometimes the camera shutter and strobe flash line up, but most times they don't. I hope that makes sense!
