Lightbar Highlight: Code 3 Select Alert- CA Spec

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This bar might be my current "holy grail" lightbar. It is a Code 3 SD, with the CA Spec Select Alert feature, which was introduced around 1982. When strobe and/or LED lightbars started to come on the market, they begin incorporating modes that lit only the back of the lightbar, leaving the front off. This is a standard feature in the lightbars of today, and is used daily around the United States. The Select Alert model of the Code 3 SD was the EARLY precursor to that idea. Essentially, the bar is built so that the rotator motors and the bulbs themselves are wired separately. When the mode was activated, the rotators would turn their typical 360º, however the lightbulbs would only illuminate when facing the rear, then go off again as they spun towards the front... and then repeat with each revolution. This was an EXTREMELY innovative idea at the time, and made the rival, the FedSig CTS, look under-engineered.
This particular bar has the Select Alert option on both sides of the bar, and are independently wired, so you can choose to have the amber only to the rear, or amber/blue combination. The wiring of this bar also allows for what I humorously call "Cruise Mode", in that all of the lamps can be turned on, without the rotators moving. I don't believe this would have ever been used this way in real-life applications, but it's a cool feature for the collection. In addition to the Select Alert and full rotating features, this bar has a nice, GIANT steady red lamp.
I'm still having a hard time figuring out where this bar is from. It has the markings "CAG", along with a inventory control number, that has been etched into the bar in a couple different locations. I have yet to figure out what "CAG" might stand for, although I am assuming "California _____ _______ ".

    Out of all the lightbars/single domes I've ever used, the Code 3 SD's were my favorite, followed by the Federal Twinsonic's. Liked them better than even the Whelen LED's I ended my career using. The SD's would've been better though if they had placed a 3rd bulb on the inside rotator. I've seen some others with a 3rd bulb but am unsure if this was sold that way or the owners added it. Also saw one person had modified his so the right side (facing) rotated counter-clockwise and the left side clockwise.

  • @AdamsLights

    @AdamsLights

    I love the SD's too! The reason that the outer rotators had 3 bulbs and the inner ones had 2, was to create a more randomized flash pattern. 3-and-3 would have been fairly symmetrical, while a 3-and-2 set provides more uneven flashes, which helps reduce the "off time".

    @@AdamsLights - Which ones had 3 bulbs? the only ones I saw, unless modified were 2 and 2 though the 2 on the inside were right after each other. This is the style I've always seen and used myself. Even the Federal Streethawk's gave more flashes on the inside rotators by making them spin faster than the outside. kzread.info/dash/bejne/hoipj7ueoc3UdtY.html

    Indiana State Police had this feature back in the 90's with their Jet Sonic bars.

  • @AdamsLights

    @AdamsLights

    3 жыл бұрын

    Sort of.... Some Jetsonic bars had a "Smart" feature, which essentially stopped the rotators from rotating, and forced them into a rear-only flash mode. Very similar concept, except the Jetsonic came about 5 years later than the SD bar.

    Connect the big black wire to your negative post on your battery (or power supply). Then, start touching 1 wire at a time to the positive terminal until you find out what each one does. It'll take you 10 minutes, and you'll have it down.

    what type of battery voltage is best for making a typical light bar work please?

  • @AdamsLights

    @AdamsLights

    2 жыл бұрын

    Voltage? 12v... same as a typical car battery. In order to make them operate outside of a vehicle (like my collection), you have to have a power inverter, that transforms the 120v AC power in your home, to 12v DC power that the lights need to operate.
