Lightbar Highlight: Whelen Model 8000- CA Spec

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

If this were MySpace, this bar would be in my Top 8 friends. It is one of the first CA Spec bars that I've ever gotten, and according to people I've spoken to who know a ton about the 80/90/8000 series bars, it's very unusual to see a CA Spec bar in the Model 8000. The Whelen 8000 bar was the first strobe bar I ever saw that has Cruise Lights, and I've loved seeing them in these bars ever since. Everything worked on this bar when I got it, and aside from polishing the domes a bit, this bad boy was ready to go.

    I remember when we first had these installed when I worked with the National Park Service in Gatlinburg. TN. Both sides were blue. Brings back memories of the strobe sound feedback you'd get over the radio. The bar had a light intensity reduction button on the side. Every department around was jealous. They were ahead of their time but were soon replaced by the low profile Whelans. Also, the take down lights were almost useless. Thanks for the trip back in time.

    That's awesome! This one has the intensity button as well.... you just made me realize that I never mentioned that in the original video! Yeah, the little micro-takedowns seem like they wouldnt do a lot in real-world application. Thanks for watching!

    Thank you for reducing the music t let us hear the the strobing noise. These bars always had such a unique sound to them and were easily identifiable just by the sound they made. We used these bars in the Fire Dept throughout the early 1980's, although ours had no alley's takedowns or flashers in them but everyone always loved the cruise lights. That was always a great feature to have and as I recall it was an add-on you had to pay extra for.

    We used these bars in the fire department back in the early to mid 80's. We didn't have takedowns or wig-wags and were just basic strobe bars but we did have the cruise light option. I'm glad you lowered the music at one point to let us hear the unique "whoop-whoop" sound the 80 series strobe bar made when activated. The early Whelen xenon gas tube strobe power supplies were very noisy but the models that later followed were reduced to a slight popping sound.

    That’s a very unique bar! Especially from Whelen. This is the 1st Xenon/halogen combo I’ve seen with cruise lights, matter of fact, I think I’ve only ever seen LED bars with cruise.

    Yeah, Cruise Lights weren't terribly popular (or easy to do) before the LED bars. These 8000 bars were notorious for them. I've also seen them in the Edge 9000 bars too. I THINK I've even seen a Streethawk with them, although I don't think that was a factory option.

    @@AdamsLights Oh that’s pretty cool! It’d be neat to see the 9000 with them, never thought about one of them having it. Streethawk would be cool too. I don’t quite know what’s be that hard about them, I guess other then having it look good? It’s just a couple bulbs on a switch (I assume). You can obviously hide them on this bar pretty easy.

    I think that's the same feeling for about 99% of people... you think Whelen, you think edge. This bar was definitely a different beast.

    Great bar! Odd sounding strobes. Is it possible to make a custom CA spec with a non CA spec bar?

  • @AdamsLights

    @AdamsLights

    3 жыл бұрын

    Well, it depends on what kind of bar it is, and how it's wired. To make it a "CA Spec" bar, there are really only 2 requirements.... First that you have at least one single RED light steady burning to the front.... not flashing, not rotating... just steady on. Secondly, there has to be at least a single amber flashing light to the rear. So, if you have the correct wiring and light modules in your lightbar to make that happen, then YES- you can make it a CA Spec bar! Thanks for watching! And PS- you are right.... the strobes in those old 8000 bars sound insane.

    @@AdamsLights Nope - CA law does not require the rear amber flasher, just the steady burn red to the front. Also, the CA requirement is for an emergency vehicle to have one steady red, it does not have to be in the lightbar, it can be anywhere on the vehicle.

    In Greenwich, CT from 1984-1990, we had this style light-bar on police cars... no flashing inner blue or steady red though - those were addl. strobes. What year do you think yours is from?

  • @AdamsLights

    Yeah, I had another 8000 (all red) that had the extra strobes. Im not sure what year mine is from. Im just so darn happy to have a CA Spec version :)
