Under the Dome: Whelen 8000 CA Spec.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video is part of the "Under the Dome" Series. The 'Under the Dome' series is a slight departure from my typical highlight videos, in that we take a deeper look into the inner-workings of the lightbars in question- how they are wired, how they work, and the general nuances of their interiors.
The bar featured in this particular video is the Whelen 8000. If you are unfamiliar with the bar, check out the original Lightbar Highlight video shown here: • Lightbar Highlight: Wh... . This video takes a look at their interesting lensing, as well as the weirdest Takedown lights I've ever seen.
*This, nor any bar shown in this video are for sale*

    Really neat. Never seen a CA Whelen 8000 light-bar - neat yellow light for rear, and deleted opposite circular inner lens. Reminds me of the show Chips - similar theory with 1 steady red light on front of police bikes, while the other one would flash. In Greenwich, CT, we had a Whelen 8000 on Crown Vics from `84-`89/`90. The inner circular lenses were strobes, red/blue, front/rear. Your light-bar has the white center-section which is what we saw in Greenwich. Some 8000s had a grey/silver non-painted area. I've never seen the 8000 used anywhere else and never in any tv shows or movies oddly. Production apparently was `78-`82 according to the company. But weren't used until `84 in our town. Crown Vics, and believe it or not, Chevettes used them for Meter-Maid use.

    Yeah, the 8000 wasnt widely used. The Northeast states seemed to get the most use. I know a guy who has a TON of them from early NY days. Thanks for watching!

    Bought many of these in red at the auction in the early 90s for the NYC TBTA units that were used on their yellow tow trucks on the bridges...They never had halogens, all strobe units in them

    Nice! Although I would say that at SOME point, that had halogens. That department originated in 1933, but strobe lights didn't hit the market until the 90's. :)

    That looks like Huntsville Alabama back in the '80s same bar is what got me hooked on strobes, they just too finicky... and they slow you down 20 mph.. but in the fog there's nothing like that 8000... I'm playing with a whelen freedom (we can) bar now...

    The lenses around the Xenon strobes are omnidirectional (aka fixed) fresnel lenses, super cool bar!

  • @AdamsLights

    @AdamsLights

    3 жыл бұрын

    Not quite. A fresnel lens is a group of concentric rings that help focus a single light source into a small beam- (designed for, and used with lighthouses). The Fluted lenses of these domes actually help break up the light, to disperse it as wide as possible, for maximum viewing angle.

    I own a 360. Prior to me acquiring the 360 in a " lot " of bars. Never had interest in having one. But once I got up close and personal checking it out. I was amazed at how much light this bar throws off. Top level has three revolvers. four front to back strobe heads. ( two front / two rear. ) , X-Fire corner strobes. Rear bottom level facing rear has directional amber lamps with separate outer red alt flashers. Lower level facing front has four TD lamp segments. Added bonus , It has a Tomar preemptive strobe head for traffic light lights on the drivers side lower level. This bar is a keeper in my collection.
