I courted my wife in the traditional way. I showed respect to her grandfather and we became friends that lasted until his death. I had "The interview" which came as a surprise event where the purpose was quite clear..."What are your intentions?" My response, "I am a serious, marriage-minded man.". I am now part of the family and I am grateful for my Filipino family. May God bless the Philippines. I have some fond memories, like the night I stayed up drinking beer and fighter wine with grandpa and he confided his painful history as a resistance fighter against the Japanese occupation, at one time breaking down in tears about his memories of the bloody deaths of friends and relatives. I'm not a drinker, but I drank with him that night till the wee hours. He told me small tokens of affection he shared with this wife, who had been gone for 10 years. "My little bird" he called her, with tears in his eyes. From that night, I loved Tatay till his last day and even other members of the family commented on how close we were. Rest in Peace, Dominador , till we meet again.

Hi Rubeauti, Your description of "Ligaw" reminds me of how my grandparents did their courtship here in Switzerland over 100 years ago... Admiring the letters they wrote to each other during courtship on Sundays inspires respect and admiration. My family keeps them as a valuable testimony of a bygone area but also as an example of how deep feelings evolve. Best regards & keep safe, François

Philippines Ligaw is no longer applicable today. Now women use dating apps and prefer to accept as much free lunchea , gifts and money. I totally disagree that there is a spirit of Ligaw. 99% of women nowadays only take men for a ride to enjoy free lunches and free cash gifts.

Men who will fly halfway around the world and hope to meet just an ordinary woman... tend to enjoy meeting traditional expectations. Being able to look a woman's father and mother in the eye is important to any real relationship. I would say that most men would prefer a strong bond with his in-laws. She is selecting a pillar of a man who will strengthen her family... not just be around for her own comfort. Relationships have a deeper importance when you consider the effects they will have on existing and future family members.

I found my permanent partner around 13 years ago and been long distance dating her for nearly 11 years. How we met was odd, how we grew an interest in each other was also odd. We met on fb years back and we didn't really like or care for each other at first, found each other annoying at first but despite that, we still talked and was peticularly interested in what made each other the way we are. We learned each other and then we fell for each other. First couple years was bumpy but after that, we grew inseparable and grew to the point we kept no secreta from each other and would tell each other what we do in our daily lives, even if it's TMI, awkward or just weird. And we are finally going to live together next year, irs exciting that it's finally happening, it almost feels unreal. And our LDR has lasted longer than most marriages I know of. I have the utmost confidence in her.

I was keeping my comment to myself but you had to go and say it! 😂. I’ve been in the Filipina circle for 14 years and have seen the total opposite of what she’s talking about. City girls like courting (nice gestures) but it doesn’t take much. In 2023 city girls don’t care much about men meeting their parents and family and getting their approval to date whether it be a local or foreigner. All that was before the explosion of the internet 15 years ago.

Very true. I saw a video of Rubeauti about 9 months titled ' Filipino vs foreigner ', basically they were say Filipino men make lots of romantic gestures etc... whereas foreigners are not that bothered. So in conclusion, I think this is a video about Rubeauti's desires. She wants the money and security of a foreigner, but with a Filipino sense of traditional values. Ain't never going to happen, so I don't see her getting married anytime soon.

I've heard nothing about what the woman does for the man except maybe for just being there and available, assuming she's not already dating someone else in the background... Hmmm... doesn't seem fair to me... especially if the man is usually the provider and bread winner, the man is a good catch for the woman that appears she doesn't have to do nothing but be pretty and ready... Hmmm... maybe I don't see it...

I've probably been blocked already. But just in case I haven't: I have had many interactions with Filipinas. They love to throw the Bible at you, and pretend to be virtuous. I don't know which Bible version they use, but mine says, (Leviticus 21:13) "And he shall take a wife in her virginity." The Filipinas you (as a foreigner) will meet will prattle on and on about "culture" and "tradition." But how does that square with the fact they slept around and had a child out of wedlock. As the author Rafael Sabatini once wrote, "Sinners are oddly blessed with short memories."
