Life in rural Russia six months after sanctions | With Lars

Ойын-сауық

Let's see if the unprecedented Western sanction against Russia had any economic impact on the lives of everyday Russians in the countryside! Check out this video I made together with Lars from @SurvivalRussia. Lars is a Dane who moved to Russia over a decade ago and settled in a small village in one of Russia’s poorest regions. He knows this country better than many people.

When I arrived in a Russian village in the Arkhangelsk region, I realized that if there was an apocalypse in big cities from the disconnection of electricity, then these guys (residents) would always survive! They have their own cattle, their own poultry, eggs, milk, potatoes, and so on!

Interestingly enough, that exact thought came across my mind when I was visiting this village where Lars lives. It certainly lacks city comforts and it’s very unlikely I would want to move to the countryside anytime soon, but their survival skills are something else

Russia is big enough and widespread in so many ways that it can be treated as an independent country. It can be expected to make its own alliances. Doing that by force however, is not an option while it is so close to the European Union.

What's interesting to me is that rural people from Russia feel very similar to rural people in the US. I think we have much more in common with them than we do with people in our cities. Really impressed with their spirit of self reliance. Most governments tend to have crappy leadership, but it's not always a true reflection of its people. Wishing for peace in Russia/Ukraine.

Money is always tight but their "make do" attitude usually carries the day. Our weather isn't as brutal but I see so many similarities. It would be great if you could do more reports like this, in even more depth. I get the impression that newcomers aren't that welcome -- around here, people tend to be a bit reserved but friendly to strangers. Then again, NW Washington has that reputation. Great job!

I am thinking the same thing about rural Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont -- there are a lot of similarities. Obviously, one huge difference is the opportunity to openly protest the war or complain about the lack of opportunity or things like decent health care. Makes me wonder what would have happened if the powers-that-be in Russia actually built a democracy in the 90's instead of looting the the carcass of the state and letting the Putin mafia take over. Would it be like a western European democracy, or would the rural poor feel isolated and marginalized, leaving them vulnerable to a Putin-type leader, anyway, the way we in the US have failed our own rural and working class people to the point where they can be convinced that Trump is their savior?

@@ambercrombie789 I was not going to bother replying to your question, as all too often this ends up as nothing more than endless, circular arguments: true MAGA believers are immune to evidence and reason, and life is too short to bother with such obduracy. However, since you asked in a non-confrontational way, I will respect the effort and try to limit this to less than essay length. Trump is a liar beyond even the routine definitions applied to pathology. It does not matter even when he is confronted with multiple sources documenting his lies, he will respond with MORE lies. Multiple fact-checking sources documented more than 30,000 lies over four years. The "what-about-ism" response is usually something like "all politicians lie": true enough, but his lack of shame reveals a profound lack of respect for "HIS" people, in addition to his disregard of law. Trump is disloyal, to "friends" (rather what he momentarily calls people who parrot whatever toxic nonsense he wants to amplify), family (he squandered millions in inheritance, and stole money from family: see Mary Trump.), and most important-to the nation he took an oath to serve and protect. Trump is profoundly inept: as impresario of a gambling casino, where customers freely give money with NO expectation of return, HE LOST MONEY. Trump's knowledge of history, economics, foreign affairs, military affairs, so woefully deficient and defiant of correction, reveals he either has a life-long learning disability, or is simply too stupid to care. He should never have been allowed to run for any office, and we can blame his enablers and that insane cadre of voters for sustaining this toxic liar and thief. I'm done.

Thank you for a very interesting and educational video. Even though news sources here in the United States are many and varied, they naturally carry a bias toward our view of things in the Ukraine and Russia. Your showing us real people and their everyday lives is an important window to the effects of the war (excuse me "special operation"). The Russian people are not the cause of the problems, yet it is they who are hurt by it. Best wishes for your continued success. A final thought: One of the early clips in your video shows a woman shopkeeper adding up a customer's purchase using an abacus. When I was a kid 70 years ago, they taught us how to use one in grammar school! There were no calculators back then. An adding machine was big, clunky and expensive. At least the abacus will still work if the power goes out!!!

I visited the old USSR in 1988. Besides spending time in Moscow and Leningrad, I took the Trans-Siberian Railroad all the way to Irkutsk, so undoubtedly passed the station the author here left the train at. Back then, there were no supermarkets. In fact except for foreign currency stores, there was almost nothing to buy in the whole country. Even the foreign currency stores had maybe 5% as many goods, even in Moscow, as the supermarket shown in the video. It was impossible to get a good cup of coffee or a iced soft drink in the height of summer. They didn't exist. Food, even on our relatively upscale tour, was generally horrible unless you liked smoked cod and beets.. To see how things have changed over the last 35 years in Russia is why there won't be any uprising against Putin. The people's lives are infinitely better than they were in Soviet times...over even pre-Putin times.

However, if you bothered to ask the average Russian if they feel a change in their government is for the West to decide...they would react rather defensively. As for becoming the next North Korea...this I highly doubt. One only needs to look at a map to quickly understand the scope and breadth of Russia's resources to weather these sanctions. Rather, we should all be concerned that these economic sanctions have only served to polarize the BRICS nations against the Western economic block. They are trading amongst themselves, now. This will only serve to accelerate the decline of the USD as a global currency reserve. Fundamentally, this move does not bode well for the average American, as a net importer of goods. IMHO.

He wanted to protect the indians, he was against slavery and was against and did not practice the things that the constitution implied that the british were guilty of doing. George Washington on the other hand was raring to take over the land the Indians were living on. And was happy to use slave labor to build his home (Monticello) and the White House. Good ole Thomas Jefferson had sex with a young black woman and had a secret passage way built to clandestinely have access to her. When visiting Europe he sold a devoted slave so he could have the money to buy some rare books. Andrew Jackson positively loved slavery. Not the greatest of people I would say.

I think the previous struggles of Russians has prepared them for hardships that many other countries would not have been prepared for. They are definitely hard working and resourceful.

@@jamesgough3938 when the people will understand that one thing, that russians are against this war! The real russians! Every video that I see, of a reporter/youtuber asking people about what they think of war is either in Moscow or St.Petersburg....like for real? go to Kamchatka, Vladivostok, Saratovsk, Kazan, etc and ask the locals there how do they feel about it....Almost everyone will tell you that this war has no meaning. Moscow is like another world, yes it is a beautifull city but people are mostly dumb, full of propaganda shit and think that they own the world (the same will be in EVERY Capital City of the World). Am for real! Like there is no better thing than to live with everyone in peace and exchange the joys of life, the experiences, the culture, the food, the technology, etc. Like imagine if russia would make an exhange program with USA for the farmers! Like the farmers from USA could come to Russia and learn something new and vice versa. Or a SpaceProgram with China, USA and build rockets to try to colonize the planets and not other countries! OR like China, Japan, Korea could also make some Exchange of Technology Program OR/AND Greece, Turkey, Italy could make some kind of combined tourism program. Like this world is full of oportunities, why cant we all enjoy it without conflict, wars, hegemony and stop wasting our lives on things we dont love/want to do. It's really sad and I really hope that someday it changes. I dont believe it will, but I really HOPE it. HOPE is always there....Wish you all peace, stay safe.

Some questions... at 3:00 why did you need to obscure the sign above the station building? To keep the town anonymous? at 14:30 those signs in the background... I know moloko is milk- what on earth is kefir?

Lars sent me.🙂 I would assume the main difference in the price of foodstuffs would be those that are produced domestically versus truly imported. For example Coca Cola is a US brand, but with some exceptions, they usually setup shop where they're distributing their products. Even if they "pull out of the country" the factory is still in Russia. The Russian enterprise could still produce the same product with no changes.

Things like soda, food, McDonald’s are easy to substitute, it’s true. When it comes to cars, airplanes parts - it’s a little bit more difficult 😅 Maybe, it’s a story for another video. We’ll see how this one play out

@@Jamal_Tyrone That attitude will encourage them to never become reliant on imported goods again. Even if it means accepting less efficient designs. Having equipment that is guaranteed to be reparable if it breaks down. Is better than having a super high tech machine that sits idle because there are no spare parts. The pandemic and now the spat with Ukraine is having the same effect everywhere. People trying to reverse the trend of global supply chains. A serious setback to the move towards globalisation. ALWAYS BUY LOCAL PRODUCTS WHEN POSSIBLE. EVEN IF IT COSTS A LITTLE MORE. It pays off in the long term.
