Is this my hometown? Life in provincial Russia after 9 months of sanctions

Western sanctions and mobilization have definitely affected the life of ordinary Russians. But has this really changed their perspective on war and everything that’s been going on since February 24th? I’ve traveled to a typical post-soviet neighborhood where I grew up to see what my childhood friends have to say. It turned out, some of them had already been drafted to fight in Ukraine…

That is complete nonsense. You’ll not live the life of luxury, but you can easily live on an average salary, especially if you also add child benefits that are almost universal in all European countries. Also, 100k salary in Russia is hardly average outside of larger cities like Moscow or St.Petersburg. For example, reported average monthly salary in Pskov was 25,925 RUB

@@insightful3452-mq7bl then you must live under a rock. There is so much nostalgia to do with the simpsons, and shows from the 80s, which accurately presented how life was like in America. Also America instead of going down a more liberal path for a second saw the conservative movement begin, and America become slightly more of a conservative society. You forget that basically hippies were killed off during this era, American classics like Star Wars were released. America became greedy and globalistic after the 80s, so the 80s is remembered as a very good era in America.

I served 28 years in the US Navy and got to meet my "old potential enemy" after the breakdown of the Soviet Union in the mid-nineties at a "good will" meet in Norfolk, VA. I was impressed to meet these Russian Navy officers who were my counterpart in the "military business". We had similar upbringing, schooling, values (them Russian Orthodoxy and me Roman Catholic), post-graduate education, families, and drink (alcohol) preferences! It was so strange that years prior, we could have killed one another. Peace be with you and thank you for this touching video production, Ciao, L, Капитан 1-го класса ВМС США (в отставке)

Yet here you( I don't mean you personally) are in 2022 sitting on the Russian border, fueling every war conflict on the Russian perimeter. US army/navy is a colonial mob hired by US oligarchs to commit genocide and robbery, covered by hypocrisy about democracy and freedom. With a very few exceptions. Good thing though, Russia is now smart enough not to believe in your BS about "good will" and other cheap manipulations. Russia is breaking your strongest proxy - neo-nazi Ukraine - as we speak, and the world is watching. After Russia is done, the world will be a completely different place, just like after WW2. Only this time you're on the wrong side of history. Russians are doing all they can so that there are no more mid-nineties, when we were lead to believe we acquired new friends, while in fact it was the same old enemy who used our trust to stab us in the back. Thank you for the lesson though, we shouldn't be that naive if not plain stupid if we want to continue our 1000 year old civilization.

I've been to Russia 2 months ago (To a regional capital, not Moscow or SPB), and certainly could not see any absense of foreign alcohol. In fact, at least for beer, shelves seem to be still mainly stacked with beers from Germany, Belgium, Czechia and all sorts of other places. Some produced under license (like Kozel), but most were imports. A far more extensive choice I have in an average German supermarkets. For wine, it was perfectly easy to find foreign ones even if many came from within Russia. I did not check liquors, as I rarely drink those, but things that visually stood out when walking past - like Aperol, Bailey's or Kahlua - I saw on the shelves. Also, "look at how thick walls in Russia are"? That's normal in most/all of Europe. We don't use the US method of having inner walls made from wooden frames with drywall attached to it (creating a hollow space inbetween). European walls are made from brick or concrete.

Misha has such a beautiful family (health and happiness are the true treasures, right?) -- Pampers here are well over $20, and often you cannot buy them. The WIC program (US subsidy for low income families) helps, but prices here make it very difficult. Gas for my home runs $90-100/month, but my little dacha? Wood heated!. We have metal fabricators and plastic extrusion companies here, but energy costs make profits smaller. I personally depend on Miele, Siemans and BMW for parts. Trust me, it is hard for us in the U.S. to get products, too. German industry is in trouble, but war is only good for the weapons manufacturers (It is hunting season, and ammunition supplies are low, and very expensive too). Most just don't know it and that's why they don't understand. About freedom. We had a VERY bad type of freedom in 90s. So yeah for some it's a bad thing because when you have freedom but no job and another murder in the yard is a usual situation then you would rather choose a decent life but without so much freedom.

@@whatnot3195 What do you mean who is innocent? The child is! That child has no clue what war is in reality. Many countries have been tricked into horrible wars, and while this day and age its easier to find out via internet, some of these men were forced to go. Not everyone, especially with families can up and leave. Some may plan to surrender but not get the chance. We don't know their idiology, and even if they believe in the war, that child is going to believe what he's told! Children will believe in Santa, so of course they'll believe daddy is a hero. Not his fault at all. So yes, he deserves empathy. He doesn't deserve that pain. We are able to have multiple complex emotions at the same time. To quote a Ukrainian soldier I heard speaking of the mobilized he has/will (possibly) killed and their families, "I pity them, but I have no regret." I wish my own country did more for Ukraine, which is what causes these children to lose their fathers, but I still feel for them and also get that children in Ukraine are far worse off.

@@whatnot3195 Totally agree with you. I believe there are a lot of people in Russia who have their head buried in the sand. I know people have to get on with their lives and have lives as normal especially when they have children but the interviews of Russian prisoners on YT shows the ignorance they started this war with. Most thought they were only on manoeuvres, were surprised when they were in Ukraine and Ukrainians from their own diaspora were telling them to go home and stop hurting their own people. We have refuges here in the UK, my friend looks after one who is a midwife with a two year old so she left Ukraine for her child's safety. Her mother is also a midwife who stayed in Ukraine but had terrible stories about Russian soldiers raping women because they come into the clinic for abortions rather than births. WAKE UP RUSSIA and think about the generations of hatred you are making in Ukraine. Stop being a militaristic society where the best way out of poverty is to joint the forces. Stop taking you children and training them for war. Stop believing propaganda which is clearly from unstable people. My family lived through Nazism and how it perverted and destroyed us. Приходилось все создавать с нуля, из ничего. Россия самодостаточна, есть ресурсы , резервы, продукты сельского хозяйства... Ну, а чего нет...купим)).
