Lexus IS300 Sunroof / Moonroof Stuck, Clicking Sound *FIX* - Explanation

If your IS300's sunroof is stuck in any position and if you can hear an audible click near the map light when the sunroof controls are pressed then this video may help you fix your sunroof issues.
My IS300's sunroof was stick in a tilted open position. The copper contacts on the inside of my sunroof's drive motor had carbon build up and was stopping the motor from operating.

    I did this fix and it totally worked! So here is the step by step instruction on how to do this (mines was 2004): This whole thing took me an hour. I spent some time getting the map light plate off and also running out to get some alcohol to clean the contacts. Remove the two sun visors. There are two screws at the base of the visor, and another for the plastic holder. The plastic holder pops out after the screw comes out so pry it with a screw driver. Remove the map light plate. Watch another video on how to change the map light cover. Its really easy once you know where the tab is. I aimed my screw driver in between the tilt and open buttons. Remove the two screws holding the light assembly and then the connector should be behind it. there is a tab holding it in so pry the outside cover and get the plug out. Now you can see the motor. The motor has two screws on it (10mm bolts). You will need an extension. Once i loosened the screws, I held down the headliner and pushed out the motor to the left of the rear view mirror (you can try to do it through the passenger side but I was sitting in the driver side so easier that way) Once the unit is out, you can follow the above instructions on taking it apart. Clean the contacts. There are two smaller contacts on the plastic housing and then cooper ones. I used some 70% isopropoyl alcohol but many recommend 99% or more because of the water content. I wouldn't really worry about it. NOTE: my contacts were in decent condition but I doubt it would last much longer since the contacts erode over time. The copper looks fine but its only a matter of time before the contacts completely erode. Put it back together. Note where the main gear is inside the motor assembly and aim the shaft away from the gear so you can slide the motor in place. It may take a few tries. You will need to push the spring loaded contacts apart to get the motor in there. Go gentle. For me, it eventually just clicked in with minimal effort. Just need to "work" it in from a few different directions. Slide the motor back in. There seems to be an additional seal on the headliner so make sure that the motor doesn't catch on it. Remember that the exposed gear on the motor sticks out so make sure it goes into the hole for the sunroof assembly. Tighten the screws back in and then connect the power to test. NOTE: I didn't test the motor before/after because I didn't want to mess with the calibration and/or where the motor was relative to the gears. It was all or nothing for me. It completely worked! I rarely use the sunroof (my wife did and then got it stuck) so I pulled the plug off of the motor. It may have been easier to pull the fuse. Put everything else back to normal.

    Hi, Rideshare, I'm glad this fix worked for you, and thanks for providing more detailed instructions for those who may be unfamiliar with the initial process. Unfortunately, in my search to find a fix, I actually removed the white gear without marking it's location in relation to the housing. Now the operation of my sunroof is all out of wack, but it does work. Since I need to readjust the white gear I'm considering a reshoot of the entire process to make it a complete start-to-finish fix.

    +Leon K I believe there is a reset procedure if you have the roof in a different place than where you started. It may work for if your gears are in a different place. I believe its full tilt up, and then press and hold up for 10 seconds. I believe this tells the computer to reset this position as the maximum position.

    I believe I pulled out the map light/sunroof control mechanism, both sun visors, and maybe the A-pillar airbag covers. You don't need to remove the entire headliner to access the motor.

    +Gam Bini No problem, and yes you're correct about it giving just enough room. I did this fix quite a while ago so I walked out to my car to double check. In addition to the things that I mentioned, you also need to remove the sunroof trim from the headliner -- it pulls right off. If that doesn't give you enough space then you may need to remove both of the "oh shit!" handles from the driver and passenger sides. They have a plastic cover and either a 10 or 12MM bolt(s) holding them up.

    Hi, before you take action I would advise you keep searching out the issue, as it may be common and easily repairable. But, if you have exhausted those, then you may want to consider some of my suggestions. In my case, my moonroof wouldn't react with the press of either button(raise and open/close). Since your's is reacting with one (clattering) and not reacting on the other, I would first check all fuses and any relays that pertain to the moonroof. If all of them are working, I would look for any broken or loose wires near the button assembly. Next, I would ensure that the mating area between the button assembly and its wire connector was clean. If all of that looks good I would inspect the actual button contacts. These are located directly under the "raise and open/close buttons" sometimes can become dirty and will no longer tell the moonroof to open/close. This can be an invasive and aggregating. If all else fails then a new button assembly may fix the issue but I would attempt to clean it first. In addition you could always try and clean the inner motor contacts that I've described in the video. Good Luck!

    it clacks up and clacks down but as for opening the sunroof it does nothing. no power getting to the motor. where are these relays? does the motor use more than one fuse in the panel?

  • @Leonsk08

    @Leonsk08

    8 жыл бұрын

    Josef Venport When you say clack up and down, I'm assuming you mean that it's tilting up and down. If it tilts up and down then the motor is receiving power and it's not a power related issue(fuse or relay). Also, since the sunroof only relies on a single motor it rules out any issue with the motor itself, considering it's tilting the glass up and down. If you press the open switch and you don't hear any noise then I would associate your issue with the button/switch assembly. The contact point for the open/close switch may be dirty, or just bad, and its not making a connection. It may need to be cleaned or replaced. Additionally, as I mentioned earlier, you can check to make sure that the button/switch panel that controls the moonroof has a good clean connection between the electrical harness plug and the button/switch itself. Furthermore, you can try to check to make sure there aren't any obstructions along the moonroof sliding rack. This is about as much info that offer. I do hope you get your issue sorted out.

    I took it to Toyota this morning and they said I needed a belt and track and it would be 1500 dollars. I am kind of leery of this verdict as my wife bought this new in 2008 and she lived in California 5 of those years and never ever opened the moonroof. So its been opened maybe 30 times and it goes bad ? I dont think so. I am going to take to sunroofs of columbia in the morning and let him diagnose the problem and I want to see for myself whats up. when the thing worked correctly it never made a clacking noise before. its the sound of something slipping but like i said there is no power going to the motor to open,, only to raise and lower the glass and thats when it makes that machine gun noise.

    Hey man so I have followed your instructions on cleaning the copper and everything has worked great and the motor turns but now when reconnecting it, it doesn’t do anything. I’ve researched and it’s due to changing the position of the white gear and i dont know what position it has to be in for when the sunroof is closed. I saw that you had a link to a page which shows this exact issue but it gives me an error since it probably doesn’t exist anymore. Also the issue I was chasing was that my sunroof would tilt fine but never did anything when I pressed to slide it open. • @Leonsk08

    @Leonsk08

    Жыл бұрын

    Ok gotcha. I would say if it is tilting up and down then the motor is not gunked up with carbon as the motor operates the tilt and slide feature. I would ensure that the buttons that activate your slide switch are actually creating a circuit. You may need to disassemble the switch and check with a multimeter. I do not know to what degree of disassembly is required. A simple test would probably be listening for the power relays activating as you operate the slide buttons. If they operate then the slide buttons are creating a circuit. Also, try tilting up the sun roof to check the slide rails for any debris that may be causing issues.

    I just checked online and both the IS300(02) and GS300(98) motor's appear quite similar. This mean's your motor should also be serviceable. I would say it's definitely worth giving it a shot. In the best case scenario, it works and your sunroof is operational. In the worst case scenario, it doesn't work and you waste some free time; however, during the process, you could potentially uncover an alternative underlying cause. I would say that it is a win/win situation. Here is a detailed guide on how to perform the fix. It's not for a GS300, but the process should be relatively the same. Good Luck. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aYOauNqEppWxdcY.html

    Hi, if you are getting no movement, I would check to ensure that you have voltage at the connector. If you have power, plug the motor in but do not bolt it in place, then try to operate it. If the motor moves, check the sunroof track for debris. If it does not move, ensure that the sunroof switch is not faulty. Best of luck.
