Simon Jordan is wrong in one specific detail in his zeal to exonerate Daniel Levy. The diabolical sacking of Mourinho on the cusp of a League Cup final was squarely Levy's fault.

  • @WOOOPdoctorFROGhere

it depends what the ramifications would have been. it is believed that if Mourinho won a trophy he'd have had terms in his contract for a big pay rise and/or a contract extension. Nobody wanted Mourinho to get an extension, so if that was the case then levy made the right decision getting rid of him whilst he could afford it.

I agree totally... Levy was a moron to both sack Jose and to do it just before a Cup Final... harks back to his moronic sacking of George Graham in 2001 just before an FA Cup Semi v Arsenal - his first act as 'Chairman'. He's useless.... Doesn't know what he's doing.

I'm fairly certain that was a financial reason. Either the slip to 7th in the league exercised some type of get out clause (sounds like something Levy would put in a contract) or he'd of been entitled to a bonus if he won a trophy (which sounds like something Moutinho would demand be in a contract). Either way I doubt it would've made a difference. Going into it Man City's form was too good, Spurs' form was too bad, they'd recently been battered by City, and they were so negative & unambitious in the match itself.

Okay my take is that Levy has failed Spurs in 3 key aspects : 1.Lack of academy players in the first team making big contributions 2.Running Kane into the ground with barely any striker depth most seasons 3.Employing managers that go against Spurs attacking principles , failing to back Pochettino

you sound so out of touch with reality. academy is a lottery. not everyone can be kane. most are winks, skipps and those are considered success. you’re in london not leeds. how many clubs are there competing for the same talent. does city produce foden every year? or every 5 years? no 2. the manager chose who to play not levy. how many clubs have top back up number 9. you have it richarlison. madrid hasnt had a back number 9 for years. just benzema. so what’s the problem. you have spent money on soldado, Jansen, llorentec, richarlison. 100 million to address that. barcelona had to get braithwaite boro reject as back up 9. 3. stadium or transfer budget? if levy gave poch 100 a year million for that 3 years instead of building stadium, that stadium would get more expensive and it wouldnt be done by now. it’s debatable you can argue you didnt want the stadium and i’d give you that.

as a spurs fan im getting sick of spurs fans 🤣 im sure they always pick the worst ones to come to air. Daniel Levy/Joe arent the only directors/owners in the PL who run their club in a financially stable way, within the PL, FFP, UEFA and FA guidelines. They arent the only ones to produce good teams and not win things. And spurs are not owed anything in terms of trophies as lots of fans seem to think they are. The more you moan about it especially on national radio the more desperate you make us and the situation seem. We have a great team and a fantastic club and we keep going. We get behind our team time and time again, not because we are owed but because its our team. DL and Enic have done a pretty good job all said and done, i just hope we can push on. No oil money and no human rights issues, thanks.

Levy is a spectacular businessman. Go back 20 years and look at how Spurs were closer to the level of Villa, Everton, Rangers and Celtic than the big 4 at the time. They were always on the outside looking in. Now they've finished in the top 4 in five of the last seven seasons, all while building the best football stadium in the world and growing into a global brand. About 5-6 years ago after the first few years of Pochettino, everyone said the big clubs would come in and steal their best players since Spurs had such a rigid wage structure. Levy broke the wage structure, and Spurs kept every single top player they wanted to for several years. Two summers ago Kane was as good as gone but Levy managed to keep hold of him somehow. This past summer, everyone said Conte was as good as gone unless he was backed in the market, and Levy found a way to come up with transfer funds by issuing convertible debt to equity securities. Levy isn't the greatest chairman in world football, but he is arguably the most efficient.

I seem to remember something similar was said by Sir John Hall and Freddy Shepherd at Newcastle when Abramovich established himself in the Premiership. I don’t think new investment and inflated prices is anything new in football, nor is the frustration that comes with not being able to compete financially. Starting to notice some interesting similarities between today’s Tottenham and early 2000s Newcastle. Right down to the potential all-time top scorer with too few trophies 😅 Although if history is repeating itself, I hope it goes better for Tottenham than it did for us.

Outside of 5 clubs in the world any premiership side can compete in the transfer market. A club can only have so many players in the squad so there are players out there you just have to be clever in the market. Chelsea brought Enzo for 105M but you could have got hi for 15M 6 months ago. Work smarter.

The thing is, they can compete. If they invest their own money. Other owners do this, as loans. ENIC could've done that during the stadium build. That debt could then be changed to equity. There's ways, and as a business, they know this. It has always been the bare minimum from ENIC. The issue isn't so much transfers. It's that you're buying based on the current manager, and not a long term strategy of furthering a identity - which doesn't exist. This has been the issue throughout ENIC's tenure. Spurs don't have an identity and strategy to support transfers. That is why it keeps crumbling with each hire. Spurs are always in rebuild mode. If Conte doesn't stay on, it will be same situation with the next manager. Square pegs in round holes. In reality, Levy should provide objectives/goals, and have a budget for transfers. Then allows those he hired to do their job. The issue has always been that Levy inserts himself, thus becoming the bottleneck. 22 years of ENIC ownership, and Simon and Stuart are referencing Kyle Walker, Danny Rose and Harry Kane. Those players are all within a decade, and became the players they are or were, under Pochettino. There was an opportunity to create an identity then, but Levy couldn't because his focus was solely on the land buying and the stadium built. The leadership structure under Levy is that of a small business, where he becomes, and has been the bottleneck.

15 years ago Spurs were bottom of the league buying Darren Bent and David Bentley. Harry Redknapp came in and got them to be a 4th place team. Their expectations are increasing but the opportunities arent there. Granted, when you look at Arsenal being top its not just being owned by a sugar daddy but as Jordan said, Spurs have had great squad 5 years ago with a briilliant balance of attack and defence. How is Levy to blame for not winning anything with Harry Kane, Sissoko, Eriksen, Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Trippier, Rose etc etc? Arteta won an FA cup with the worst Arsenal squad in history.

@@2talljoey because it's actually a lot harder to win trophies now for anyone who isn't a powerhouse club. Spurs are a big club but they aren't Man United or Liverpool, and don't have the resources of city and Chelsea. Hence why the stadium move and brand growth, in an effort to compete long term. Back in the day, trophies were not always snapped up by the biggest clubs of the day like they are these days. City winning 4 out of 5 league titles and even so many league cups for example.

Football will always amaze me with a sense of entitlement of fans asking for endless spending on players at the expense of the stable financial future of the club. Everyone thinks that they know what's going on within a club and understand the ins and outs of expenditure. I would rather the club being around in 50 years rather than is be wound up and going into bankruptcy by living beyond its means. If this ever happened the same fans would be complaining twice as much as they do right now imo.

Van was already to take over at Spurs, then United came in, and he changed his mind (turned out to be a blessing). Willian, same thing. Changed his mind when Chelsea came knocking. These Spurs fans forget how City started off by overpaying for players when the oil money came. Even at Chelsea, the owner had a mission in mind, and the money wasn't an issue for him. To expect an owner who doesn't have oil money and an image to clean up like City and Chelsea have and had, to spend like that is a joke.

In fact the football side of the business is a hindrance to them and if they could ditch it altogether they would in favour of NFL, Concerts and Vegan Platters. While the big boys are recruiting top players for the future Daniel Levy is talking about Hotels and Houses amd upgrades to the sliding pitch. Spurs as a football team died in 1987 when Hoddle left and died altogether as a Club when the Lane was demolished. They are now irrelevant.

The two are linked in football. If you read that full statement it shows what the club brought in as a business through winnings, TV and commercial deals. We can't just tell the lads to go out there and kick a ball. We need to attract talent and that talent expects to be paid. There are hundreds of staff that need paying too, you cannot ignore all clubs are businesses. I personally prefer our sustainable approach that I'm confident will eventually pay off, rather than all these clubs using loop holes and dodgy commercial deals to overspend and distort the market. It'll catch up with them eventually, Man city are feeling that already

Tottenham is a big football club not based on merit but only and only based on the size of the football stadium, that's all. Again the stadium wasnt built with an aim to win trophies but to try to increase the profit of the club purely from business perspective. End of the day, one shouldn't forget that it's a "football" club. The real question is, a bit philosophical, why does Tottenham exists? Just to stay in the league or try to win some trophy? A classy move from Levy to come out with a prepared statement right after the League charges City for FFP. What he is saying is: I’ve spent a lot so the fans should shut up and also don’t expect any changes in the next windows. We the fans should look deeper into his MOTIVE. He doesn’t care about football or winning. He wants to sell the club for the biggest profit possible: (1) That’s why he built the new stadium - so that the new owners will not have to invest further after they buy the club; (2) That’s why he is not spending in transfers to make us competitive. HE IS DOING WHAT MIKE ASHLEY DID AT NEWCASTLE. HE WANTS TO GIVE THE NEW OWNERS ROOM TO SPEND UP TO 400M AFTER THEY BUY THE CLUB. The second point above is at the core of it all. If this constitutes “mismanagement” then the fans should hire a lawyer and bring up a class action lawsuit. Protesting will not get the job done. Only something drastic that will make him shiver that the value of the sale asset may go down will. The worrying thing is that a portion of the fanbase has been successfully brainwashed by Levy’s propaganda narrative - that we don’t have the money like the others. This is a loser mentality. Just look at the revenue that we are generating. We are 9th in the world. With Chelsea in 8th and Arsenal in 10th. The spending should be up there with those two London rivals. And no more excuses about the loan for the Stadium. It’s a long term loan (which the new owner of the club will inherit). It’s all about point 2 above. It’s mismanagement and he should be taken to court. If the fans choose not to take drastic action, then Kane and Conte are the only people that can convince Levy to spend. Fans need to be behind them.

@@doughill1945 Loan had very low interest rates. And when the interest rate for the loan is lower than the inflation rate, it means the cost of borrowing is very very low. What I am trying to say is that he is doing what Mike Ashley did to Newcastle. Leave around 400m room under the FFP so that the new owners can spend. If somehow we can push Levy to downsize that room to 200m, along with our growing revenue, we can invest in a competitive team that can challenge. And Levy can still make enough money from the sale.
