Level Up Your Thrifting to Find Antique & Vintage Deals!
We venture into a big thrift store in this episode, and watch some amazing finds happen! Valley Thrift Store in Fairfield, Ohio is a destination for Jocelyn @CrazyLampLady, so she takes Kate @Followthatbugvintage and me to see what we can all find.
There's a lot to learn about thrifting in this one, but the biggest lesson is that timing is everything! We give up our empty cart to a fellow shopper who's already found a handful (including the familiar 1970s Tupperware jello ring), just in time to find a good piece of Fostoria Navarre and a Victorian style cranberry bowl...so it's back up front to get another cart!
Missed it by that much! Just then, we see a lucky buyer find a newly placed shelf of really good, big 1950s metal toys from Texaco and others that we were sad to miss. That tells us that we need to circle back through the toy section to see what else they're putting out...and a Tonka Jeep appears! We head back through the stacks of merchandise, pointing out anything vintage of merit (even a clarinet), talking about why it's better to buy tableware sets rather than odds-and-ends, figuring out when it's worth buying something for parts and when it isn't...all things that we've learned over our years of thrift store antiquing excursions!
In the end, we find a good set of stems (and talk about why we left one behind), useful replacement pieces for vintage readerboards, and a number of other things our collectors will enjoy. Now, is there room in the car for all this? We'll make it happen!

You are always so kind and gracious to the other buyers....
George I always come away from your videos with a ton more knowledge then before watching them. You are a treasure to me!
You found so much to talk about! I love the history you share. A thrift store becomes a museum!😊 I think self check out should come with a discount! Not a fan! Thank you!❤
Your optimism is a great model for all of us. You ended up finding things in older glass, Nice !
I'm so disappointed in the goodwill and savers, value village, pretty much all the corporate thrifts and their markup prices,,,it's insane,,,shorts at savers start,,START, at 10$😢
George, your sly sense of humor makes me smile while I'm learning : )
You are so knowledgeable. I enjoy watching 🙂
I despise self check out, as anyone who cares about jobs for humans and because I live with ADHD, which causes my brain to sometimes blink off, esp if being rushed by store staff/other customers. I think others living with a disability involving cognition and motor function impairments would agree. We don't want less easy access job opportunities, but need more. Again, people living with a disability might need that kind of work.

Luckily at that store you can go around the jewelry counter and get waited on quickly and no self check out
George I so appreciate all the education and info you give us on everything!! Big ty!
The Nortaki is a well loved china pattern among the people who love setting tablescapes, It is called Christmas Ball and is often featured on Christmas tables.
George I was envious each time you turned over a plate and the price tag was not covering the maker info. At least 2 Goodwills in my city make it a habit to cover the info with a price tag that does not budge. Luckily, I recently found a plate that was so pretty, I didn't care who made it. I soaked off the tag at home and found written: "Kokura Ware Japan 1018 Fairwin." I would have bought anything in this design but there was just one plate.
George, I just love how you explain things, it makes it so interesting!
Self checkout is anathema to me. I like a sales person who enjoys what they do, and will often point me toward a matching piece I may have missed. I also don’t want to put people out of jobs. If you make friends with sales clerks they often give you a heads up on new stock as well. Looks like some of you had a good day there.🖤🇨🇦
Thumbs up for George!

I hate self checkouts! And I can't believe they had them at that thrift store!!!
Those divided dishes are never out of style. They are always useful at holidays for pickles and things like that. Mom always used hers (which was Candlewick) for celery stuffed with cream cheese and walnuts on top. And they aren't real big to store for the rest of the year.

So true! My mom had a melmac red-orange one she trotted out, usually one side was tasty and one side was nasty (sorry mom!)
Our Unique Thrift stores in NJ are all Scan yourselves -- I love it Great video George Thank you
I hate self checkout. Glad I found your channel
We used to use those pressed letters even in the 90's in the military. I have not seen them in years brought back memories.

They're really popular again now.
I do not like self scanning! Especially when they then want to stop you at the door and treat you like your a thief! When they ask me to see my receipt I tell them no, that they should trust their employees! trust me or fire me!! 😂😂

Good for you! I agree
I played the clarinet and if I was to buy that one I would want a new mouthpiece!
I dislike self checkouts . And I don’t like it when they’re hollering over the intercom to bring your stuff to the checkout either.
Pyrex lids are worth buying.
I made that exact pattern of magazine rack when I was in wood shop in high school. And I am as old as George so it wasn’t too long ago. Lol
You can always spot Noritaki by the cream colour around rim.
Purses! It is amazing how many are in thrift stores! And, as I write this, someone is buying a new one and paying retail!
I love Valley Thrift! I live in western North Carolina and drive to Dayton Oh to visit my grandkids. Always stop by the thrift store when Im there. I always look for fine jewelry and usually find it! Enjoyed this video and new subscriber!! 🎉
Interesting store ! Those Texaco trucks were cool . With self check outs, these days with the cost of goods and groceries, they can’t expect us to check and bag our own items . If a store doesn’t have a cashier on, I’m outta there . 😊
I always check the bags! I found a lalique perfume bottle, a number of Swarovski miniatures, sterling silver sugar and creamer, a Steuben blue Aurene master salt, a set of ten beleek individual salts, several Waterford clocks and a pair of Grueby faience tiles....all in four dollar bags at my favorite thrift store in Buffalo, NY. So many incredible finds in those wonderful bags!!!!

I agree with you. However, Smeg (an acronym for Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla, Italian for Emilian Guastalla Metallurgical Enamelling Works) is an Italian home appliance manufacturer. Smeg Group S.p.A. Company type. And they are a quite expensive brand.

Wild George shut up with an absolutely brilliant Store be safe in your travels can have a nice weekend.😊😊😊😊😊
Smeg is expensive! I would have bought that. Thank you so much for your expertise, I learn so much!
I DO NOT CARE FOR SELF CHECKOUT!!! I particularly do not care for credit card only ones ! 😊
I have the matching creamer and sugar to that fosteria dish you picked up
We had that Coventry dish set in the ‘70’s… fun store!!!
I hate self checkouts and I don't like machines that talk to me!!!!!
Good evening, George. That cranberry glass was pretty. That guy got a good deal on those toy trucks. Not a lot that caught my eye, but you never know what can appear at a thrift store, at a really good price. That makes it fun to browse them. Thanks for the take-along!

Thanks! Yes, I didn't see great antiques at this store, but to see someone find a large collection of something of interest was nice
Good Eye, finding the Jerry Garcia-approved TIE! That was a good pick up!
I’ll stand in line for an hour to avoid a self checkout
I collect Jerry Garcia ties. As I know, he didn't exactly design ties. Stonehenge used his art and made ties from it. If you look on the back, often the title of the painting is marked. Jerry took some convincing to do the tie collection, but in the end, it was his most successful venture. I wear mine a lot. I design clothing with old ties - used to have a source in Long Island City - 100 old ties for 25 bucks. I have often thought of making a Jerry Garcia piece of clothing to wear, but it would break my heart to cut them up.

I read that too, he let them use his art as a basis--probably smart, he's involved but still arms-length that way. I was shocked he agreed but honestly he gave so much of his royalties to bootleggers and fans that I suppose he deserved it as a make-up
Love Red Dwarf, but I'm not from England. I have seen that brand while thrifting and had a good chuckle!
I have a ton of those Taylor Smith Taylor green dishes. They were my mom’s from “dish night” at the movies. A relative gave theirs to her, too, and they have lived at our cottage ever since.
Live in the Netherlands and all of my big and small appliances are SMEG 😂 Love them

Hello Michigan!
One of my big finds was coming across a Franciscan Atomic Starburst bone/waste/bread? dish in GW in mint cond for maybe $6. I flipped it on Ebay for $90! I can't believe what that pattern sells for. I guess a full set would go for thousands... but I've never seen a complete set for sale. 😮
There are awesome finds at times at goodwill, even on seniors day! Today I found Quimper plates! 2 signed dinner plates, 3 dessert plates( 2 signed) 1 bowl saucer ( unsigned) 1 signed bowl and 1 signed tile trivet! I did leave behind 1 dessert plate and 1 cup and saucer duto chips and repair. I was so excited..now to figure out pricing..seems to be all over the place!
New subscriber here….love your channel…you’re so knowledgeable! Blessings to you!
It can be well worth it to look for missing parts / set-pieces in thrift stores (similar to your Tonka Jeep top search). I once found a very early Staffordshire John Milton figure in wonderful condition... My mind instantly wondered if the Shakespeare mate could be? Sure enough found it in a different aisle. The set cost me probably $10 in total and are easily worth a few hundred.
You didn’t say the price of the Hummingbird print, but I would have picked it up for the frame and the non glare glass. It costs a fortune these days.
Self checkout takes jobs away from those who need them.

The stores where I shop still have the option of waiting in line if that’s what one prefers. I’m old enough to remember adapting to filling your car with gas instead of getting “full service”.

Hi George! So glad I had a chance to talk to you in Spokane. I love the 2 brooches I got from you. I hope you did well!
Thank you George!
So informative, thank you!
That is a waterbath canner, mostly used for canning acidic foods, such as tomatoes. You would use a pressure canner (not pressure cooker) for canning most other things.
Cool old toys!
21:41 George, the pink plastic vegetable warmer IS Tupperware. That sells for $25+.
Love the Bavaria china. I was born in Bavaria. I would have bought it.
That *did* look like an A&W hat. I thought the //same// thing once when a girlfriend shrieked 'Look what I found!' and smiled broadly holding up a SMEG teapot, hahah
You rock that tie. Just waiting now for you to find a hat!
I don't like self checkout, especially at regular stores, which can afford to pay cashiers.
❤ JoAnn
I like your knowledge
Very fun. 🎉🎉🎉
I love that clear glass with the beautiful handles.
Thanks George!
I love that you’re shopping my old stomping grounds! I found a set of solid wood Lane end tables at one of the other locations for $11. Recently saw one end table at a thrift store in LA county for 65.

I always learn something from your videos and I like your pacing. Yes indeed, I have a 1951 calendar plate...that's my year! I LOVE self checkout and use that method only. I understand they are starting to remove self checkout due to theft. Also, it takes away jobs, but I'm too impatient to wait in long lines.
Smeg!!! 😂
George, do you remember which OHV Thrift you were at--I definitely need that AH PresCut cake stand to go with my bazillion pieces of American PresCut!
Very fun thrift trip!
That Smeg kettle was actually an amazing find! They sell new for $200+

Valley Thrift obtains a lot of their donations from VVA and Vietnam Veterans charity org local donations. A certain amount .of proceeds from sales goes to the charity from what I have heard.

Really love watching your videos. I'm wondering if you know anything about Gurley candles. Is there a book about them? A friend recently bout a few that included a banana shape with a black face boy peeking out between the peel. We both think that it's very rare.
I hate self ck out!
My son prefers self-checkouts; I prefer regular checkouts.
