Level Bombing with German Bombers - Bombsight Tutorial - Il2 Battle of Stalingrad

Ойындар

In this Video I explain how to use German Levelbomber effectively.
I might add from todays perspective that the Bombsightaltimeter is off.
To get a closer approximation from the targets altitude you can press left Alt + R to get the "closest friendly airfield elevation".
That makes the drops more accurate.

In 2002 I was at the Dayton Air Force Museum with my 3 year old son when we saw a big group of older guys looking at the German planes. I started talking to them and found out they were all in the Luftwaffe in WW2. I talked to 109, 190, Stuka, HE111, Ju88, and Ju52 all pilots/crew. One guy I talked to was an HE111 bombardier I told him about this new simulation of WW2 planes called iL2, he was amazed that they had anything like that. I was telling him about the HE111 and how the Bombsight worked and I was having trouble getting bombs on target. He asked if it had an auto release feature modeled of course it did. So he told me that he use to set his parameters and raise the sight up to see the target and turn on the auto release then he would use the speed adjustment knob to stay on target so if the cross was going below the target he would adjust it with the speed knob to move back up and adjust it to stay on it. He said you would have to adjust the speed because the air speed is just indicated and could be off so using the speed knob to align the target was the only way to be sure of a correct hit.

I love the HE 111 H6 - here's why. It's an absolute tank in the air with tons of gunner positions. If you stick autolevel on and jump on your rear guns you have a 360 top gun and a limited rear/belly gun. These cover you perfectly since most fighters will come in behind and below you and try to match your speed - you just switch position and trash them as they are presenting you a perfect shot at them. You seem to survive plenty long enough to do this so there's really no need to panic unless they are strafing you or perfectly level behind you. Another thing is it can carry 2 x 1800 bombs. Even with slight last minute deviations to your bomb sight calculation you are pretty much guaranteed some destruction on the ground. Overall awesome plane, just requires some engine management knowledge and you're away. A little extra tip: If you bind a button to drop bombs instead of pressing the big red button, you can use the turn dial to bank left or right the whole time you are dropping them. This gives you that extra little bit of coverage on each pass and really doesn't affect your calculations, since you turn so slowly it takes about 10 seconds to turn 5 degrees.

Excellent tutorial. I've used this to get started level bombing which I find quite enjoyable. I just want to point out one thing I've learned from my limited experience. The view mode can account for wind if you "align" it with the manual view. Here's what I do: 1. Once on final course to target, enter all necessary targeting info - aircraft speed, altitude, wind, etc. 2. Switch to view mode and move it closer/further while periodically checking in manual mode until the picture is pretty much the same. It doesn't have to be perfect in terms of distance as long as you can make out landmarks that are common to both views. If the wind is correctly entered and there is crosswind, the view mode will be offset either left or right of the manual mode picture. 3. In View Mode, use the left/right View Direction adjustment so that the ground track of the vertical line on view mode matches the ground track of the manual mode. Again, this takes a little back and forth switching from View to Manual modes. 4. Once the ground track vertical line of the Manual and View modes are the same, then View mode is "aligned" (corrected for crosswind). You can use View Mode to find your target in the distance, make course corrections, etc. Obviously if you have to make large course corrections like >5deg or something, you may have to re-align the View mode, but the correction should be tiny. 5. Once the "triangle" in the view mode gets close to the black curved bar (don't know what it's called...) make any final adjustments to course (tiny adjustment only), altitude, speed, etc. 6. Switch to Manual mode and when the cross is over the target, bomben los! Using this method, I was able to keep the track of View mode dead center for many kilometers even with a crosswind. I had to make only a tiny course correction 20 or so seconds from release but otherwise it was far easier in the end. Of course the key to level bombing is to get set up early. Good luck!

Nice video! It' s better to check your altitude in the cockpit altimeter after setting it on "nearest airfield elevation". Doing this you'll know the exact altitude of the land/target in the map. Remember that doing this, the altimeter in the bomber view won't change so you need to set it from the cockpit's one

I just found your channel and I am also new to IL-2. I have searched for any vids that talk about dive bombing and I cant find any. I think you do such a great job explaining the topics you cover, I think it would be great if you could do a video for true Noobs playing the game. Example: for me I started a career in the P-47 but the first mission is to bomb a train depot. I have done this 6 times so far and have been able to drop the bombs on target. I would really would like to learn how to do properly. Thank you for your time considering this. I know you do more experienced videos but I think there are more noobs like myself searching for helpful guides for starting careers in game.

Something i would like to see on tutorials on everybody's videos is technochat? why? because as things are explained on a video we can all see what exactly are the things that are happening to the plane, thats why i like these videos. Hypothetically speaking you could say on any video "this guy was strafing at 80% power, wow i always use 70, maybe 80 would work better for me,wow he just opened his radiators,i only open mine when I'm landing/taking off etc,his plane is staying cool, maybe i should do that and so forth, been playing IL2 since 03 but always love to learn new things, love your videos man, they are great.

Very good video! Could you maybe go into auto bombing mode a bit deeper? I've found even if you set everything correctly, then pick any target (crossroad, corner of a forest or whatever visual landmark just for practice), and start auto tracking that spot, the crosshair will drift downwards always a bit faster, than the spot you aimed for. So you constantly need to correct it back on the spot. Dunno if setting QFE and using that instead of the bomer sight altimeter on the left for setting altitude helps... Thanks in advance if you can take the time for it...

If you fly 000 you fly straight north. And with the dial you have to dial in the direction of the wind in relation to your aircraft. The wind is coming from 207. That means the wins is coming from south West. And that is in relation to you to the left. Now if the wind would come from 270 you would have to dial in 90 from the left if the wind would come from 90 then 90 from the right. If the wind would come from 180 then 180 on the dial. Perfectly from the rear. In your example the wind comes 17 degrees of in western direction of the south. Since we can only setup in 5 degree steps I use 20 degrees. 160s from the left.

So. . . On Wings of Liberty these days there is this guy, "PUH=Drinkens" (or words to that effect) who flies Russian (at least the times I have been on). The Germans are tearing up the sky with their fighters (let's face it, the German fighters are better) but losing on points. . . the Russians are winning. . . (WTF?) Drinkens has about 80 - 85% of the Russian points, all by himself. Although i don't know what plane he flies, it pretty much has to be the Peshka (I love the Sturmovik, but God could not do that with a Sturmovik). He has lost maybe 4 planes, but the server will never run out of Peshkas (all the cool kids fly fighters). I would imagine he is doing some level bombing because things are nasty close to the ground, even in a Peshka. Personally I have been flying Sturmoviks because I like the plane and its history. So. . . Two sorties, got two targets on the first one and made it back. Second one, I missed the target and got trashed by something with a lot of 20 mils. And I am number 7 in points (out of 33 or so). So. . . (Wait a minute, I already said that, didn't I?) Fighter pilots are the heroes, air-to-mud wins games.

Drinkings is an idiot. He takes a peshka dives on the next target destroys what he can and had no interest in survival since he is faster back in a peshka with bombs. No need to fly back. Generally is wol not a server where I look who wins since the map layout promotes just senseless furballing. Wol is for the fun. Drinking wouldn't stay on taw for 30mins since he would run out of pe2s in that time
