    The F series was the last pure fighter. The G series were up armed and armoured for destroying bombers. Or so said Adolph Galland or someone like him.

    The engine torque does not "get less" as you take off. Whats happening is as your airspeed increases the sideways force provided by the rudder increases . Thus you don't need as much rudder applied at high air speeds as you do at low. That's the reason you decrease rudder the faster you go on takeoff.

    If you are moving from CloD to BoS/BoK like I am, some additional notes: 1. Take the F-4. It's pretty much an E-4 with more power and "done right" (Fly it and you'll know what I mean by that). Skip the G-Series in the beginning and ignore the 190's. 2. Pay SPECIAL attention to the notes, Sheriff gave about the tail wheel lock and careful throttle usage while on the ground. They are spot-on. Likewise, configure the stabilizer, you'll need it. 3. Don't worry about the seemingly "lesser" armament. The fact, that your single cannon is aligned with the center fuselage not only lets you ignore any convergence-setting games you did in CloD, but you'll also get more shots on target in average, which makes up for the loss of the cannon. Don't even consider the extra cannons under the wings. 4. try to enter the fight on continuous power. combat/emergency is not needed for manouvering and you should grow a habit of using it only, when you really need it. Just my $0.02

    In this comment there are some things I disagree on. 1. F-4 like the E-4 with more power? ok steep since the F-4 does not turn as well by far. 4.) why tho? why do you want to fly on continous power into a fight? E-Power not needed for maneuvering? Why does it even have those engine capabilites then if they aren't needed in a fight?

    I wrote "If you are moving from CloD to BoS/BoK like I am, some additional notes:". So take my comments in this context. 1. Sure, the F-4 does not turn like the E-4, but in the context of the games, this hardly matters. In CloD, the E-4 is not really capable of turing with the opponents (mainly Spits Mk1&2), so you generally tend not to fly it as a turnfighter. 2. In CloD, people tend to fly the E-4 at 100% throttle most of the time, and only hit WEP when needed (mapped to an extra button/key for that matter). In BoS, flying the F-4 at 100% means combat/emergency on all the time. Which is, what you get, when you map the throttle to a throttle quadrant. To put it in simple terms, my suggestion is "Do not fly at 100% throttle all the time, as you may have used to do in CloD". As for the general flight-characteristice, you are right. My comment was more geared towards the pilot switching from CloD to BoS/BoK. Which, by the way, also explains my "Skip the G-Series in the beginning and ignore the 190's." comment. You should of course not skip those planes permanently, as they can be rewarding to fly, especially the 190. I hope, that clarifys my comment.

    in a turn fight with F-4, utilize high yo-yo as much as possible, to use your powerful engine and low weight to kw ratio to both gain you potential energy and to keep your turn angle as tight as possible. this alone will help you to win the energy advantage for your opponent, since you will keep gaining more energy than him. it will also give you game ending angles over the target you are chasing even before winning the energy race. This will be even amplified due to the fact that the russians will most often fly with their flaps open, consuming a ton of more energy than u already.

    Love your videos man,you explain things real well, Ive been playing this game since it came out basically in the early 2000s, i wouldn't consider myself a crack ace or anything closer to that but i enjoy the game immensely, i actually sometimes just enjoy flying by myself,no combat at all and i love landing because there are so many things involved that you have to get just right. A few minutes ago a buddy stopped by with his son who only plays shooting games like Call of Duty and things of that nature which i also enjoy once in a while and i set him up with my Trackir and he was crashing every few seconds and yanking on the stick really hard, stalling and going into spins and it reminded me of my early days, lol, who knows maybe he will talk to his dad and ask him to buy him the game,we might have a future ace in our midst's or he might just say "screw that game, thats too hard" only time will tell. Something i haven't done much on this new incarnation of the sim is bombing which i wanna get into with the Heinkel 111 or the Ju88, i did it quite a bit on the old Sturmovik but our new bomb sights are a little different,anyhow thanks for the videos, i subscribed the other day.

So far I have taxiing and take offs down, but I'm bleeding off too much speed circling the landing strip and I stall out. Bombing, strafing and dogfighting are a long ways off for me as I'm still concentrating on not crashing.

    I LOVE the way the f4 flies, but, possibly because a) I can't shoot worth shit, and b) Japanese martial arts training emphasises the "one decisive cut", I'm more attracted to the 4x 20mm of the fw190. Anyway, fantastic video and a lot of good info for anyone using the F4 in any decent flight sim, not just BoS!

I haven't been flying since the original IL2 version, but always found the F-4 the most formidable and easiest to fly. I loved it. I did purchase newer versions of the game but found many things changed for the worse, so basically lost interest. Now after viewing Battle of Stalingrad I'm intrigued. Would be interested in your views on "Convergence" settings. I recently became aware that it matters even with cowl- and engine-mounted guns. It will (or should) also set the gun sight to compensate for the drop of the rounds over distance, and that is important no matter where the guns are mounted. It would seem that using 200 meters as a standard shooting range (and setting the convergence for that distance) would minimize the difference in impact points between the MGs and the cannon. With cowling-mounted guns you do not have the shotgun pattern of wing-mounted guns, so adjusting for differences in target distance (i.e. 200 meters may be a bit close for a ground target or a bomber) would be a matter of "Kentucky windage" up or down on the sight.

  • @SheriffsSimShack

    I use 400m convergence. To be able to pull off more difficult deflection shots. Since you can lead targets in turns a little easier.

  • @CapMurd

    I'd say cover is secondary. A good formation of bombers/attack planes can't be beaten by a fighter wing, too weak, would get rekt so hard, but since bombers panic and don't know shit about covering angles in formation they are easy prey in IL2: BoS public servers. So I'd say cover is secondary and helps to keep fighters busy but not necessarily a must for every flight. Bomber pilots ought to organise themselves first before they start getting cover, but I guess that would be too demanding for public play. Take 6 bombers in formation for example, a single fighter wing would have to get really lucky if these bombers know how to be a bomber wing. So fucking destroyed. I bet if the entire team were to fly together in several 6-8 bomber flights all together the opposite team would cry rivers since they couldn't do shit to prevent these bombers from their objective and just keep losing their fighters to swarm of machine gun fire. Perhaps a good fighter wing that knows how to attack a bomber wing that knows what they are doing might potentially take them out 1 by 1, but a good fighter wing is a rare sight in public servers as well, so I think it is fair to say that if bomber pilots were to organise themselves in public servers they wouldn't have a match and there is no cover necessary at all. ;)

  • @DerKurfuerst

    @DerKurfuerst

    7 жыл бұрын

    I'm afraid thats not quite the truth. First of all we're talking about Ju 87 here that have a very abysmal angle for the reargun (only beaten by the 110 perhaps) and second of all this is no a combat formation of B-17s. The heaviest thing we get are He 111, Ju 88 and Pe-2. And getting back to the B-17s: Even they suffered heavy losses without longrange cover. Teammates give the enemy something else to shoot at and you might get someone every once in a while. But nothin beats a good fighter cover. Especially true in the Stuka. One pilot could wreck a Schwarm of them easily with experience and in that case most important triggerdiscipline.

  • @CapMurd

    @CapMurd

    7 жыл бұрын

    I agree on Ju 87, but you forget that we are talking about public servers. Ju 87 is easiest wing to destroy, but I think they could hold on their own against most public players. They are just that bad with their fighter tactics. Also, you are talking about fighter swarms taking on several bomber wings. That is a tactic that does not exist in public IL2 servers. Never, ever, have I seen something like that outside of private play. Same obviously goes for bombers that don't know anything about how to fly as a proper wing. So really what I said is harsh truth of a state of public servers in IL2. If the entire team were to take some heavy bombers and fly together the opposite team couldn't really do anything to stop them. From my private server plays I can tell you that a single bomber wing can easily keep a single fighter wing (4 fighters) at bay without necessarily being the loser in the fight. It is 50/50 really and single fighter wing needs to be really lucky cause bomber gunners are ballers (at least ours are) and will fuck them up if they even pretend to look at them at the wrong angle (just imagine 3-4 gunners all shooting at you at the same time from your best attack angles, then you can see why you are bound to go down). So really you need at least 2 wings to ensure complete destruction every time for a single bomber wing of 6. Also, just FYI bomber pilots were afraid of FLAK more than fighters and for a good reason. Flak is something you can't really deal with, but fighters can be easily repelled. Flak critical hit meant bomber's inability to stay in formation leading to outcome of something you see in IL2 BoS servers where everybody just flies randomly without a brain. This is why I prefer private play over public cause public players are all ruining my immersion with their weird play styles - everybody is basically lone wolfing, even wings that think they are "working" together.

    Excellent video, Sheriff! Very helpful for someone that just picked up the game in the last sale :-) And luckily a lot of things are automated in the 109. I have one general question though: How do you know in which direction to take off and land at an airfield? Is there some sort of rule or do you just take off the way you seem fit as long as there is noone else on the runway?

  • @SheriffsSimShack

    Every airstrip has two taxiways to them, both lead to park positions. However only on one new aircrafts spawn in and they use hopefully the quickest way to the airstrip. So you can identify in your landing pattern which side is the "busy" one by just observing taxing planes. If *you* spawn in and you search for the direction you have to go to get to the runway, zoom fully in on your airfield. You can see your spawn location.(marker of the airfield) That way you identifly in which direction you have to taxi. Quickest way to the runway is yours. Generally speaking if you need more than 2-3 Minutes to the runway you taxied the wrong way. Sometimes the starting and landing position on TAW is market by a fire. Like here: cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/301637712962781184/303594952837955586/unknown.png U see a moving plane on the parking spot you see a plane on the beginning of the runway and you see that fire, which shows you if you have any crosswind btw.

    What settings do you use in IL-2? Because in your video I can very clearly see the enemy aircraft against the ground but in my IL-2 I just constantly lose them. They just merge with the background.

    Hi Sherrif. Thx for the very helpful video. Helped me a lot getting into the game. One thing makes we wonder. I suppose you have some kind of Tracking Software, right? Could you please tell me which camera mode, camera settings you use? If I use Cockpit view I always get stuck for a moment on the x/y axis. If I use the free cockpit cam it works but the cam is stationary and for example leaning left-right won't work...

    I have a bit of trouble to understand what your problem is. I use track IR and it takes over all axis. You can also adjust the sensitivy off all axis in the software. some more info: sheriffssimshack.com/

    *Mistake: the F-4 had curve top in the armour back sit to save the pilot in case of fire behind the plane, here appears as a usual strait and sort back armour plate pilot sit. Well it's just a comentary to the ones who worked in this wonderful Bf109F-4 in the Game. A Madrileño who really loves Luftwaffe aircrafts. ;) All the best with the " corona.." wish you Luck!!!

    At the end you mentioned to maintain level flight until enemy loose that extra speed from the climb. But in the situation (like yours) when you are on the deck and enemy is La5, he has a speed advantage on the deck. So shallow climb may not be enough to secure some distance. In other words: it may not be enough of time to get to 2500m where you have an engine advantage and la5 eventually will close the gap between. Do I understand this right?

  • @SheriffsSimShack

    @SheriffsSimShack

    5 жыл бұрын

    of course. but the la-5s speed does not translate well in a shallow climb. And you are quicker back on the needed alt than you think. Alternativy make the climb a bit steeper. the La-5 doesnt like steep climbs. Furthermore the 109 is better in a dive and can maintain higher speeds in a climb and can build up a bit of seperation which is is often enough.

    Hey ! I found this video very helpfull however i have a few questions. You mentionned Trim was important. Now i understand what it does but i don't understand how to use it/i don't know what to bind it to. Also i have no clue how to Lead properly (Especially in turn fights, i haven't attempted to play multiplayer yet) so any extra tips are welcome. Thanks !
