    It's an Il-2, not an IL-2. It's the first syllable of constructor Sergej Iljuschin's family name. It's *not* an abbreviation, Americans! Same goes for almost every other Russian plane, like the Su, the MiG (which is also not an MIG - and US folks got it, I still wonder how and why), An, Ka etc. pp. The clue is already in the spelling: a capital followed by a lowercase! I remember that you, as a kinda pleasant exception across the big pond, had got it right already in older videos. The only US-American I knew so far. And now you're calling her an IL as well? What happened? What a shame! Thumb down for this unnerving nuisance and incivility of US people of not only constantly raping foreign people's personal names but also Russian plane type designations by mispronouncing them just as they see fit.

    Hey Andy, this is an example of the principle of primacy in my case. As you know I am aware of how it's pronounced, but I make mistakes just like anyone else. It's not intentional on my part. I'll do my best to avoid it in future videos, so thanks for pointing it out. By the way...I may live in the USA, but I'm a proud Australian :-)

    It’s strange how even the game writes IL-2. I do it cause it differentiates L from i. And seems that everyone else on internet does it, including the IL-2 game producers...

    I think it's simply because looking at all the kinds of box art the "STURMOVIK" after it is usually all capatilised as well. The capatlised L does make it easier to distinguish though, so it was probably a marketing thing going back to 1946.

    Two good reasons to keep pronouncing it IL-2 even though some of us know that's not the 'authentic', i.e. original Russian way: 1. if you say it like 'ill', very few people even in the aviation community will know what you're talking about (and communication is kind of the point of language); 2. the 'ill' pronunciation would tend to correspond to a lower-case presentation, which in most mainstream fonts renders the capital 'i' and the lower-case 'l' indistinguishable from an uppercase roman numeral 'II', thus making it impossible for a reader (at least, one unfamiliar with the context) to recognise (let alone pronounce) the intended syllable. So no, Andy, this is not an example of linguistic aggression against the proud heritage of Russian aviation design (otherwise, why do we pronounce all the other examples- Su, MiG etc- you gave correctly??) but simply a pragmatic deviation from the 'correct' pronunciation so as to avoid confusion; and your anger is excessive, since there are plenty of examples where non-native speakers of English compromise on 'correct' pronunciation of English words for the sake of maintaining clarity.

    Outstanding. I was wondering about the change from reflex sight to paint-it-on-the-windscreen sight between the 1942 and 1943 models. (According to the pilots, early fighters often had windscreen gun sights because reflex sights were in short supply.) Always wondered what the horizontal lines were about and I don't think I even noticed the lines on the cowling. Estimating altitude above ground level is going to be a critical skill. I don't remember whether target altitude is given anywhere. (Enough of a challenge for some of us converting meters to feet.) I don't remember whether target altitude is given anywhere, and you would have to add the step of correcting the altimeter to nearest friendly airfield. Since you want to keep your eyes out of the cockpit and may be dodging fighters and flak, learning to judge the altitude above ground seems a better approach. Starts me thinking about custom skins for other planes to get the same kind of effect.

  • @RequiemsACTL

    @RequiemsACTL

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yeah it's hard to get the altitude right as you get higher so correcting to nearest field would be a good option if you don't know the elevation of the area. These maps are done very close to real life so the elevation in game should be the same as RL. I personally prefer just doing the 50m drop. It keeps you low and it's easier to judge your altitude and when to drop the bombs.

    Why would you convert metres into feet? In Russian planes there are no feet anyway (as well as not in Germans). This backward and annoying habit of still measuring altitudes and other lengths in lengths of certain human body parts was introduced to us first after the WWII. Thanks to: victor's justice meets characteristically submissive, spineless German attitude, I assume. But thankfully it's still not true in Russian aviation as Russians had had the balls to say fuck off. Because converting reasonable, beautiful metres (based on a natural constant) into ugly human, medieval feet stinks. Proverbially and literally. Since the Il-2 is not only a Russian but also still a WWII plane, there are no other feet needed but those you were born and need to fly the plane with. ;)

  • @Lemard77

    @Lemard77

    5 жыл бұрын

    Another fact that led to the convertion to the "painted" sight was that often IL-2s had to make emergency landings (damaged by aaa or fighters) and the pilots were injured (and sometimes died) when their heads hit the reflex gunsights in the crash, so appart from the added capability to aim rockets and bombs, it was also made for better pilot protection.

    Thanks for this but I understand the principle but am unable to put it into practice. As far as I can see you raise or lower your head to line up black lines on white. However I cannot raise my head high enough, either with TrackIR or with the keys. The other variable must be proximity of the head to the sight. I am using the standard view set up. Your head must be quite close to the windscreen to achieve the rapidity of line movement compared to head movement. Off topic: I also notice your field of view especially sideways is wider than the standard view. How is that done with TrackIR?

I use Vr with the oculus rift s, and whenever I try to follow the procedure, I drop my bombs late. I find that in order to line up the top and bottom bars with the lines on the fuselage, I have to move my head forward instead of up. My VR system will not let me just move my head straight up without my whole view shifting. Do you think that my head position might have something to do with it? Cheers.

    How are you moving the black line vertically? Do you mean simply adjust your head position to get the right parallax? So the black line is just a visual aid to project the cowling lines out to the sides? In the second Sea Dragons mission the Il2 wing drops bombs from ~600m at 260kph in level flight - I assume they aren't using this VV-1 sight for that?

I know everyone’s system is different, and there’s no “Golden bullet”, but I’ve noticed you tend to value a higher stable FPS rather than aesthetics (similar to myself, especially with TrackIR). Do you usually turn down some of the settings to do so? If so which ones? Thanks for all your input.

    Thx for the video. How did you know you were at the correct altitude? Your altimeter kept telling you you were higher than what you wanted.

    My guess is that his altimeter was showing altitude above sea level, whereas this requires you to do altitude AGL (above ground level).

    The altimeter was showing altitude above Mean Sea Level (MSL), so to figure out Above Ground Level (AGL) you take the elevation of the area and subtract it from MSL. Otherwise eyeballing 50m is the easiest way to go about it.

    How does one adjust the seat position in game? 1:52

    You either use TrackIR or VR to move in your seat, but if you don't have either of those then adjust your seat position using HOME, END, INS, DEL, PgUp, PgDn keys on the numpad.

    @@RequiemsACTL So I have watched a few of your videos and one thing i have noticed is that, especially in your ground attack videos, your plane stays extremely calm during attack dives which allows you to accurately get your shots/rockets/bombs on target, whereas I have trouble keeping it steady. Do you use trim during these attacks or is that your joystick settings? Oh and I also plan on investing into a new stick, what setup are you using and would you recommend it?

  • @RequiemsACTL

    @RequiemsACTL

    It depends on the strength of your centering force for the joystick. Those ground attack videos I flew using my old Logitech G940 and had the centering force down to nearly zero, so I didn't have any resistance pulling the stick back to center, which made it easy to keep a steady aim. I never needed to trim using that stick. I use the Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS now, so I'm trimming all the time to keep my aim steady. I much prefer the Warthog since I fly DCS as well as Il-2 and the HOTAS covers what I need in both sims nicely.

    I don't think so. AFAIK the lines were designed based on level flight so if your diving the line wouldn't indicate when to drop

    @@fenbeiduo Ah sorry I know what you mean now. Yes of course you can drop the bombs in a dive just like any other airplane. This is just how to use those sight lines for level bombing. If you drop them in a dive you would just need to guess the right time to drop.
