Improve your deflection shooting with the Russian PBP-1 sight in airplanes such as Yaks, Laggs, IL-2s, and Pe-2s. This lesson includes:
- A breakdown of the sight and it's mil values
- How to precisely calculate range using mils
- Examples of estimating range using the PBP-1
- Graphics of the PBP-1 with Angle Off in two main airspeed scenarios
- In-game demonstrations of the above concepts

    That's right Gabriel. I used the Yak-1b so I could illustrate the principle of using the outer rings. Unfortunately with the head positions in some of the other Russian airplanes you won't be able to see the outer ring properly, so for the most part if you learn how to only use the inner ring that's all you need.

    Not sure if you still comment on video's from so long ago mate, but watching you control your fire in slow motion I notice the tracking direction suggests you must be using rudders quite a bit at times? I ask because a) my marksmanship is awful and I'm trying to improve and b) I wonder if that's partly because I try and stay balanced and not yaw/skid but that means it's harder to track the target unless my wings are parallel to his (hers)..

  • @RequiemsACTL

    @RequiemsACTL

    4 жыл бұрын

    I thought I already replied to this Lofty a few days ago but I see it's not here...I'll try again. The time my video has been up isn't really relevant to me to reply to it, because I create these using actual real life documentation and not on what works "in a game" so these videos will work in any other sim provided it's modeled correctly. It's hard to tell exactly every time, but I may have been uncoordinated at different times and the rudder was used to bring me back into being coordinated again occasionally. You're thinking is right though...you can't track the target unless your wings are parallel...because otherwise you're not in the same plane of motion which means your firing solution is only valid for a moment (ie - a snapshot). If you're in the same plane of motion then your firing solution lasts much longer (tracking shot). The rudders can be used however you like, but it is best to try and stay coordinated if you can. There are times when I will slip or skid to create a shot opportunity, but doing that comes with practice as you have a good general idea of where your bullets are going to end up by doing so. These gunnery videos (and the accompanying PDF document) are there to give you that general sense of how to shoot initially and help you improve faster. With practice you will no longer need to visualise the Angle Off rings and you will simply point and shoot without thinking too hard.

    You have perfectly explained the vertical lead, I understood everything. It is not clear how to take preemption if the enemy has turned into a turn, and we are to the left or to the right behind him? In the old Soviet manuals it is said that one must take preemption in the figures. But how much and at what speed it is not clear! It would be great if you made this video)

    I based the rings off the equivalent of what the Soviets used for the PBP-1 historically in the video when the bandit is at 45° angle off depending on his airspeed (400 or 600 km/hr) as seen here kzread.info/dash/bejne/aq192bWYaLG2Zps.html The inner ring is 45° Angle Off at 400km/hr, the outer ring is 45° Angle Off at 600km/hr. I then used some math to extrapolate the other rings to approximately equal the other measurements on the sight. The PDF document in the videos description is there to download off my Dropbox and it has examples of Angle Off for a good variety of airplanes.

    Dennis Ejstrup thanks. I think the wing damage aspect is fine from both sides of the coin, especially when the cannon rounds start hitting home. I get my own wings shot off pretty equally while flying Allied or Axis. It's a big surface area to shoot at it in a turn, then you're applying G force to a damaged area so I'd almost expect it to happen

    The Air Combat Tutorial Library but most ww2 fighters and especially the fw190 was made tough with not only a main wingspar to take the blunt, but many ribs to spread the load in case of damage. I have not made any research of it, but i do aircraft archeology with ww2 time period and I have not yet found an aircraft with only one wing within the main crashsite.

    There are some WW2 gun camera footage showing wings off even in case of medium sized two engine planes by .50 cal machine guns, there are also cases of fuel tanks or ammunition storages blowing off, like in this video for example kzread.info/dash/bejne/p594ydCpYM-aipM.html Maybe it wasn't as common as in the sim, but it happened. I think there should be some more shootdowns by aerodynamic effect of having a wing turned into swiss cheese than the currently more common structural failure though. Or maybe this is a consequence of us being 1G PC chair pilots by which we can achieve more accuracy than the real pilots (and thus much devastating effects on the targets if all parameters are correctly modeled).

    It does for me too but these rings are there for the new pilot who has trouble hitting the target. These are about providing a basic framework to use so as you get more experience and practice your gunnery will improve faster. Eventually you won't need to think consciously about it and the rings won't be necessary anymore.

    I don't understand where you're getting "angle off"... You seem to be aligning your nose at a "best guess" angle, and deciding based on where you've guessed his angle off, which seems to contradict the precision of the action vs just using experience to know where the bullet's go. Care to explain?

  • @RequiemsACTL

    @RequiemsACTL

    I don't know if you've seen the first or second videos, but this video assumes you have as the concept is explained already. The Angle Off is how you see the bandit, and based on its Angle Off and estimated airspeed you will place it at a certain radii which I approximate by creating the rings. They are simply a basic guideline to get your "eye in" so to speak and with experience you won't need to consciously think about them anymore.
