Improve your deflection shooting using the N-3A sight in airplanes such as the P-40 and P-39. This lesson includes:
- Mil measurement of the N-3A
- How to estimate range for airplanes using the N-3A
- Graphics of the N-3A with Angle Off in two main airspeed scenarios
- In-game demonstrations of the above concepts

    This explains a lot about why I've been unable to hit anything with these gunsights: I thought they were 100 mil this whole time, not 70. Gentle reminder to myself to do more research and double-checking, but also thanks so much for making this. I adore the P-39, as awful as I happen to be with it. Cheers.

    To be honest I still don't like the gunsight. It seems kind of odd to use such a smaller reticule considering the target speeds they were up against.

    It would be really nice if the dev would add this sort of information (gunsight radius) to the plane stat cards. They give all the wingspans, but leave out the gunsight info that makes the wingspan info relevant! Great video, as always!

    @@RequiemsACTL I have done a lot of research on things like this, and pretty much everything else from basic maneuvering to engine management, energy management, and bfm. Your content has been a great resource for learning a lot of things! It's funny how little revelations can make such a big difference in your flying and maneuvering. Thanks for all you do!

    +RequiemBoS *The United States avionics industry has standardized on the 70-mil ring and pipper* from the U.S. Reflector Sight N-3A for the HUD gun directors of current tactical jets; a thick sector on the ring tracks the range to target as an input from the radar. With the radar offline, a "railroad track" historical sight mode uses two tracer curves to show the paths that shells fired from the the tips of a 10m span would take as viewed from the cockpit. Still, I'd think the Navy's Mk 8 reticle, with its spokes at 90°, 135°, 180°, 225°, and 270° (with 0° being the 12-o'-clock reference), better suited for aiming rockets and missiles as well as the gun under emcon.

    I think "convergence" would be a good topic. Since an actual first-line American fighter (P-47) came in the game it is worth talking about, particularly since the Jug is so big. My impression is that "convergence" is mostly about setting elevation for nose (or cowl) mounted guns, to compensate for bullet drop over range. With wing-mounted guns it is also actual convergence, and the farther they are from the cockpit the more it matters. Some of the newer sights seem to allow adjusting the reticle for range, but of course this is not going to change convergence. All of this is a bit complicated for your average home gamer.

    If the devs ever add harmonisation then convergence is something I'll probably go into more detail about.

    Thanks Chuffer, I'm glad this one is done though as these deflection shooting videos take a while to complete. It definitely helped me appreciate the P-39 though. Initially I didn't like it but I kind of prefer it to the P-40 now.

    I flew all of these on the Berloga server as it's the fastest way to get decent deflection shot footage. As long as you keep enough airspeed it handles pretty well, but once you get slow then you can start having a hard time

    Another video that I watch multiple times - too bad you can only check "Like" once. I notice you have the cannon and MGs on separate buttons/triggers for the P-39, which I think makes a lot of sense. For most of the cannon For most aircraft in the game, the velocity, ballistic coefficient etc. of the cannons and MGs are close enough to equal that firing both with the same trigger (the default) makes a lot of sense. However, the 37 mm pumpkin chukker on the P-39 is a whole other breed of cannon. My impression is that unless your range is right on your convergence setting with a really stable target (and low angle off) the odds of the MG and cannon rounds landing anywhere near each other are remote for the P-39. I.E. - I also have cannon and MGs on separate triggers. But here the fact that you cannot set separate key bindings for different planes (and save them) is really annoying. I sometimes forget to hit both triggers when flying other airplanes that have usable cannon and MG combinations.

  • @RequiemsACTL

    @RequiemsACTL

    Yeah I always keep MG and cannons separate. I guess I have the muscle memory built up to use both buttons when I want. That P-39 cannon really is something else though so that needs to be on it's own. Not just the trajectory and all that but the rate of fire is probably the biggest factor. You may be able to have the right gun solution to hit with the MG but if you're off for the instant the cannon fires you'll miss with it.

    Good afternoon, help me deal with the American sight. On the grid, it is similar to the English sight Mk 2, the circle is also equal to 20 degrees? However, if measured using its range, the results are different. If you completely enter the Me-109 in the Mk-2, the distance will be 90 meters, and if in the N-3A, then 140 meters! And visually the circle is less than in Mk2.!

  • @RequiemsACTL

    Downloading the PDF file in the description can help you understand this. The difference is due to the number of mils used for each sight (70mils N-3A, 120 mils RAF MkII), so the results will be different when you range an airplane in them using their diameters. For the Angle Off you might be confusing the airspeeds between the two. At the lower airspeed range 170-210mph the ring is 20degAO in the N-3A and 30degAO in the RAF MkII. At the higher airspeed range above 300mph the ring is 20degAO in the N-3A and 45degA in the RAF MkII.

    great video again! thanks! I noticed When i fly and try to shoot plane which is more then 45 deg or around, it speed is around 300 km i have to put him way below my nose i cant see him and its really much more then you show here, its like he is circling and me on his tail, i try from around 250-300 meters to shoot him, put him just around 90 degree circle, but i miss behind him, so i have to go beyond which is hard to hit. Any suggestions, do i have to position myself less angle?maybe closer? thanks

  • @RequiemsACTL

    @RequiemsACTL

    When they start getting over 45 degrees it's very difficult, especially because you're probably pulling a few exta Gs as well that alters the picture very slightly. At that point it's more of a snap shot (a split second of hitting the target) versus a tracking shot (where you can follow them and keep firing). Try and position yourself to be more towards their 6 oclock area instead of being off to the side if you can.
