Letters to an Asexual #96 ("asexuality helps with population control!")

This is #96 of a series in which I read correspondence between me and people who have questions, comments, or--more often--misconceptions about asexuality. In this video, I feature a discussion with a man who believes asexuality helps society by cutting down on overpopulation and that it represents rationality and logic when contrasted with people who desire sex.

I agree that it's still important to make room for sex-favorable aces. I think some of us can be prone to falsely coming to the conclusion that you're some kind of "traitor" to your sexual orientation if you have sex. And it also challenges the idea that asexuality is about celibacy or being sex negative, which is how a lot of people tend to interpret asexuality initially. But also, yes, it makes sense that most aces choose not to have sex and that can't be overshadowed. I'm trying to think of a time where I got a weird comment about aces being more "pious" or something... One time in collage, a friend of mine made a weird promise that he was going be abstinent for a whole month or something just to prove to me that he could do it... I told him that he REALLY did not need to make that promise at all, and I wasn't going to hold him to it. But he did it anyway for some reason...?

Yeah, we really do need to make sure the sex-favorable aces don't feel like their asexuality is invalid and that they're welcome in the community. Outside the community, I could see them being superficially accepted as if they're no different from anyone else if they're in a regular relationship that includes sex and not that many people will actually care what the sexual attraction experience is like for them, and they might not really even feel like they can talk about it with the rest of us if we don't emphasize that they exist. But it is true that THE BEHAVIOR of sex is what a lot of non-asexual people fixate on for us, and it's pretty important that they don't get the idea that aces, in general, can be assumed to not mind having sex or that all of us will compromise. And also the people who really don't care for sex but compromise for other reasons . . . they probably feel like fakers sometimes if there's too much emphasis on abstinence as definitive inside our community. Someone swearing off sex just to prove their restraint or whatever seems weird to me. But then again, I'm really not into those kinds of displays for anything.

I'm going to keep my big trap shut on my views on population control. I'll only say that they have nothing to do with my ace-ness Maybe onions can become the new Cake. Or the anti-Cake.

How to say "Sex is Bad" and act like you're somehow more valid to say that than if you used the more common purity culture bs talking points. Saying "all of humanity should stop having sex forever" is never "logical" lol

It's also frequently invoked in eugenics dialogues where people having too many kids is directly tied to racist and classist commentaries about which people "should" be having kids and which people's reproduction is valuable while other people's reproduction is considered a drain on resources. Some places are legitimately too crowded but overall "overpopulation" conversations sometimes veer into xenophobic perspectives. (Beside the point of the video, though--since asexuality isn't about whether we're having kids of course.)
