Before I knew about OCD and that I had it, a therapist told me while I was in a moment of crisis to "imagine you are defending yourself from your mother." This was one of many times she has me "somatically experiencing" and "imagining this or that." The hordes of violent ideation demons kicked down my psychic door with flamethrowers and convinced me that there is no hope, that I will never feel better never mind feel good and that it was my fault. This is after I disclosed to her all the classic themes of OCD. She had no clue after telling her about intrusive thoughts, compulsions, a straight up checklist of all the classic symptoms. A degree in psychology makes people think they can not do damage to someone's mind. I terminated with her soon after. I ran in to her a few years later. She looked entirely exhausted and flabbergasted by my ability to sit comfortably and look her in the eye. I wondered if the reality of her work caught up with her and she realized that therapy is more than "life coaching." If I ever go to therapy again, I am going to spend the first five sessions asking the therapist questions before I say anything about myself. Buyer beware.
