We are a (sort of) normal couple living a rather unusual lifestyle in a Tiny House on Wheels (192 square feet) trying to fit more adventure, travel and exploration into our lives! We love to go camping, hiking, backpacking, kayaking…and traveling with our 16 foot Scamp Trailer. We have an awesome Adventure dog named Redford that is up for anything. Come with us as we Let New Adventures Begin!

I grew up in Ocala and am familiar with all the areas where you’ve been traveling. Florida is unique and beautiful in many ways. I left in 1991 and have never had any desire to return, except for very brief visits. Here are just a few reasons why: Cockroaches, palmetto bugs (cockroaches that fly), both of which will run or fly right at you; fire ants ( you can’t strip butt naked fast enough if you step in a fire ant bed) coral snakes, rattlesnakes, water moccasins, all of which are poisonous. Yes, really big spiders, which aren’t that bad themselves, but make really big webs (always fun to walk into). Sand spurs, Lordy they are painful, and more so for Redford, because you probably won’t be barefoot that much. I’ve never been colder, or hotter, than in Florida. Hurricanes, tornadoes, ferocious thunderstorms. And nowadays high land prices, the difficulty finding insurance coverage, the nasty politics, and in those areas where you’re looking especially, the “good ol’ boy” network. Whew, girl, I can think of at least a half dozen other places in the South I’d rather live. But y’all do what makes you happy. Just consider yourselves warned. 😉

Thanks for the insight 😊 we like to consider all things when making a big decision- especially the drawbacks. Snakes are my biggest concern at the moment to keep Redford safe! If only the US was more RV and Tiny House Friendly we would have more choices...but for the east coast it is only Florida...luckily we do like hot weather 👍😎

You won't see a Crocodile here in Northern Florida. They are only in the southern tip of our state. Out Of Staters often have incorrect ideas of what Florida is. We are a huge state, with varied environments and people. North, Central and South Florida are very different, almost like different states. But, you are right on our Huge Spiders! One thing I could gladly do without! 😲

It is like a different state- we have really enjoyed exploring! And i just keep asking myself WHY are the spiders so BIG 🙈 Besides that it is a great area with friendly people!

My biggest spider problem was on motorcycle rides in the forest roads. The big Golden Orb Weaver spiders will send webs across a two-track road, and running into one and getting the webs all over us was very disconcerting! Immediate question is, "Where's the danged spider!?" 😆

I have to agree with living in Florida for 8 years as well as camping in a small camper traveling . I would say keep on looking in another state as Florida is way too hot!

Florida is a place of contrast- beauty & challenge! One of our biggest challenges is that its not legal to live in a tiny house on our own property in any other state on the east coast besides Florida...so it narrowed our choices. Maybe one day the zoning will change & other states will become more open to it...but I have a feeling it wont be anytime soon so we are gonna work with what we've got 😊

I personally saw land for sale around Englewood. (I'm from PA) "Traveling Robert" bought an acre of land in North FL. "Abom79" bought 10 acres. "Until further notice" just bought 2 acres that has a mobile home on it for a home base for their 5th wheel camper. Moved their parents from CO. I guess you would have to see the zoning of the property to see if you could put a tiny/ mobile home on it. Spiders won't hurt you if you don't hurt them. IDK if you'd like FL. Hurricanes, humidity, thunder storms with lightning, which FL is famous for. I was born there and quickly found it's better to visit than live there. Traffic is terrible!!! Oh, they are alligators, not crocodiles, which can be seen as far north as North Carolina.

Florida is one of the most RV friendly states & the Tiny House is titled as an RV so we will be able to move it there! There are many (many) challenges with the area...but also the freedom to live as we like...so Florida it is! I like the fact that there are other travelers settling in the area & it is a great jumping-off point to explore the southeast- an area we have not seen much of. We are staying far far away from the traffic (although getting to the airport will be interesting!) and we much prefer being hot to being cold so we are going to give it a try and see how it goes 😊

It's good that you are not in a rush to move. The one comment above was enough for me. I don't like any flying bugs. I could throw my neck out just from freaking out. Things that could hurt my dog where I dont really have control are also a big consideration. I'm talking about the snakes. It is interesting how over time you might have completely different ideas on what you want than when you started your search. You will end up with something awesome at your fair price. I just know it!! Just curious, is it the snow you dont want anymore?

Im not too concerned with bugs, but snakes are a big topic- especially because Redford is handsome...but maybe not the smartest 😂 We have talked to some locals with dogs & learn how they manage the yard and use chicken wire & some other things to deter snakes from the yard so we will be doing all of those things for sure NJ is extremely expensive (one of the highest in the country for price/acre and taxes / acre) with very strict zoning, and we want a longer growing season so we can produce more of our own food- among other things...

How much do you think your scamp weighs and how's the cherokee holding up towing? I traded in my 17 grand cherokee overland with tow package for a18 cherokee trailhawk with tow package because I like them better. We use a 1200 lb 12x6 cargo trailer converted for weekend camping. Haven't towed it yet with the cherokee.

our Jeep is not the ideal tow vehicle, but we purchased it a few months before we got the Scamp so we made it work & it has been good for the past 4 years (we took several things out to lighten the Scamp - furnace, awning, bathroom door, toilet and we don't move with full tanks...not sure what the weight is now). But Patrick is looking forward to an upgrade in the future to make towing on steep grades easier for mountain trips. I think the trailhawk should be fine- its probly close to the weight of the scamp
