Lenses: Let's take a look at them, NOT through them!

Ойындар

Lenses are the greatest part of a VR Headset that no one seems to know anything about! With the recent release of the Quest 3 everyone has been singing the praises of pancake lenses, but what even makes them different from fresnels? And what about the asphericals Pimax seems to love bragging about? If you wanna know all about the lenses in your VR Headset, you've come to the right place!

This is extremely informative and helpful for someone still trying to figure out a good entry point to VR. I feel like I've seen a dozen other explanations and articles about this topic, but yours is by far the most concise and informative. Thank you Jacob!

So uhh polarized light is really weird. Something to do with light being twisty and spinning clockwise or counterclockwise if I remember correctly…

Also no wonder my experience with the PSVR 1 was a trip, I was looking all around the screen and was really confused with how I was seeing and screen door, or even the screen cutting off, I looked as far as I could and I was still seeing all around me, Aspherical lenses may be bulky and heavy, but if the benefit is you get a experience as great as on the PSVR, then they really need to keep investing and developing the tech behind them so they can be as close to you and the screen as pancake lenses

The tech behind pancake lenses is quite interesting, I remember a few years ago how it was announced as a project being worked on internally threw Facebook, so to see the tech come to florition and be as great as they are is amazing

Fresnel lenses are not usually aspheric, but there are aspherical fresnel lenses. Aspheric are not spherical lenses like you showed, they are more complex. They correct for barrel distortion, and achieve single point focus across the lens for monochromatic light. They are also flatter and lighter than spherical lenses. To understand what an aspheric lens is, compare it to a regular spherical lens.

I saw that you love talking about full body tracking, but what options are there for eye tracking and/or face tracking?

Something I discovered for myself and then understood from the reddit community for the meta quest, is that pancake lenses get a pretty severe haze or glare from inside the headset. It is more noticeable, if for example, you have a dark background and a logo appears. I thought at first than my lenses were dirty, then found out it was a common issue from other posts about it on reddit when it comes to pancake lenses. Not sure why it does that, but it's not a deal breaker.

I find that games that are dark frequently are annoying to use with pancake lenses. They are better suited for bright games.

@@jpawhees I guess that matches the fact that they aren't OLED either. You really cannot win, Fresnel lenses are so blurry apart from the center.

Why are Aspherical lenses so rare in VR headsets? They sound like the best solution unless you want to be active or want a small headset.

Jacob has definitely indoctrinated me here and on TikTok so much that I've been looking up every VR headset I can find, cause now I really want one, so I keep up with content to get advice on which one I should eventually shell out for as my first headset.

Love the last line. I would love to add on to it. Save your money people !!! VR is not here yet. Great hardware but man, the software STINKS !!! In my head, the software is supposed to sell the hardware, not the other way around. Alyx has been the ONLY must have title. It made me climb up the VR ranks. About 10k(money spent on it since 2020) later, I still have not answered Eli Vance's call because after Alyx, there's nothing left other than sims.

Probably because they're a VR focused channel using VR to communicate kinda makes logical sense.
