Thanks for posting! Designed an HMD before and working on a new HMD design. Want to do lightfield or pancake style.

Sorry for being confused... Which side is the display, and which side is the eye? I assume left is the display, then shouldn't the blue lines never start from the middle but actually start beyond the red lines' starting points? But lets say the right is the display, again shouldn't the red lines just be the middle 50 degrees, and then the blue lines the rest?

The left is the eye, the right is the display. The diagram shows that from the same pixel of the display, the light bends at different angle. The blue is when the lens set to wide angle, so the image looks bigger, the red is when the lens set to the narrow angle so the image look smaller.

no brightness loss if you recycle light ?
