I love this laptop. In order to not have the fans come on when doing less demanding stuff go into windows power options and get to processor power management and set max to 90%. This will also help your thermals in gaming too. I know I can go even higher because the temps were low even under a gaming load. If I ever feel like I need the extra power I will bump it up then but, until that day comes, this is fast enough for me at 90%.

Just got myself a thinkbook 16 p witch basically the same laptop with less wattage on gpu and a QHD screen ....and like you said , while it's not noisy on game , it's never quite when plugged , the AMD clok speed never goes idle , i had to enter regestry and unable advanced power scheme option to set the cooling strategy to passive and the % of max cou at 50 % on a scheme ai cretaed for web broswing and chilling .... shame on lenovo , really , my xps is dead quite (intel of course witch idle when it can) , i'm neared to get it back than keeping it ... I skipped the hp omen due to build quality and 16 /10 but at least you have an editable fan curve availlable !!! Your review is on point , the fan do have a high pitch noise at low rpm .... as a content creator like you it's a BIG DEAL

Worth noting the Legion Slim 7 models just now being released (and presumably from revious months) have pretty much fixed all the issues you mention here. I skimmed through your video and such things like the fan volume and build quality and even the hulking back area that juts out has been fixed/improved.

It's normal for a gaming laptop to have the fans always running, the cpu's used aren't the same as those used in ultrabooks, which are fit to be silent. Those are built for simple tasks and be silent. These have a much higher performance cap, but thence are also running hotter.

Hey, Andy. Thanks for covering this laptop. I just bought one for myself two days ago. Should I expect any troubles with Steam download speeds? I'm on a 25 MB/s connection and I'd rather not wait 10 days to play a game due to bad read/write speeds or other hardware issues.

the hell are you talking about there is no issues like that. Its a solid machine. realtek wifi cards suck but its a $25 fix to buy an intel if you truly care or dont use it next to your router.

Andy , try this for fans : go to widnows power schemes , use and existsing scheme or create one , go to cpu power management and under option put cooling in "passive" mode , you can choose options when on power or batterie ect .... and tell us if there's a difference ....my xps is dead quite (zero fan spin in idle) i tune it for pro audio laptop myself , i don't rely on their Apps to do so ... I was considering this Lenovo but all AMD stuff i watch on KZread are dead high in temp (so in vent need).. Can you do a latency mon test and report (in balanced mode) ? Thks

Great review Andy, i bought mine in bestbuy for $1400 a year ago, and have no regrets. the finger prints issue its real but like u said... easy to clean so no complaints. have no problems with the speakers and fan noise coz i used headphones 100% of the time, so... no trouble for me with that either. with the laptop i bought a usbC adapter for the ethernet port and works perfect, plus i gain 2 extra usb ports. im interest now in put another ssd and more memory, maybe u could give me some advice on that.

I just got one for a graduation gift. I got mine from Best Buy for sale around 1095 before tax. My first one had a stick pixel in the middle of the screen. I exchanged for Another and haven’t had the same issue. Overall I really love it. It is a fingerprint magnet but I have been looking into getting a skin for it.

It's slim enough that you shouldn't have an issue with laptop sleeves designed for a 15" laptop. I have a backpack with a somewhat tight laptop compartment and it fits way nicer than my 15" ThinkPad from work. Definitely has a larger footprint than a Macbook Air, but it's only around a pound heavier so not too bad. The power brick is relatively chunky though for something like a messenger bag, though USB-C charging could keep you going for light use.

I've had this laptop for about 3 months...I actually really enjoy it. Battery life isn't the best, but you can tweak the settings and get some distance out of it. Have you upgraded the empty m.2 slot yet? I had to return a Samsung 980 pro cuz it wouldn't work

@@rescuerammer5357 I'm using both. I have a 1TB Crucial P2 in the main slot with a 512GB Samsung PM981a in the second slot. I think the 2nd slot is only PCIe Gen 3, but it should still work with a Gen 4 drive as far as I know, though I don't have one to test.

Not a problem on battery or USB-C charging. If you use it plugged in with the 230W brick, it probably wouldn't be that disruptive, but people right around you would likely be able to hear it.

There is/was a bios update that fixed the fan issue when plugged in on quiet mode it no longer runs fans at all until after 65c

Ive seen some other people with the march 2022 bios (HACN35WW) and they are still having fan issues AND when you dont have icue they can no longer swap between rainbow puke and white etc with Fn+space bar its either on rainbow circle or off nothing else.. Mine is not this way but i just checked my sons who has the 5900hx 3060 lenovo direct/costco spec one and his is acting like this still.

You forgot to talk about the mic it is insane on this laptop honestly you might not need a dedicated mic if you only doing voice calls

Hi guys, need some help to decide between 2 laptops: Lenovo Legion 7 slim with Ryzen 5800H or a Dell G15 5510 with i7-10870H? Both are RTX3060. Lenovo is 165hz while Dell is 120hz. Lenovo has 16Gb RAM while Dell is at 32Gb (I'm not really inclined to upgrade). Equal amount of editing work and gaming, not heavy on either.

Works great in Davinci Resolve. Will probably want to upgrade the RAM for larger projects, which is fortunately not too costly since it's DDR4.

Hey, do you know how to turn down the refresh rate to 60 hz? I recently just got this laptop and I heard turning it down can help the battery life, but hitting Fn + R (which is a feature on Legion laptops to cycle through refresh rates) doesn't seem to do anything for me. I've checked the display settings as well, and it seems to be stuck at 165 hz. Thanks!

Make sure you are using Optimus or both the igpu and dgpu. If you are just using the dedicated gpu it locks fps at 165

It's almost never totally silent when plugged in unless you're doing literally nothing with it. On battery it stays silent almost all the time if in Quiet Mode. This huge difference in behavior is my #1 frustration with an otherwise excellent value thin gaming laptop.

@@BurakCankaya its fucking silent when your not doing things or if you actually use quiet mode. If your not under load your not going higher than 2k rpm and maybe 20db max which is perfectly fine no matter what your doing not to mention actually being dead silent in quiet mode. Its one of the better gaming notebooks in its segment as far as this goes as the cooling is very good.

You can use a Type-C to HDMI cable. Works well, though I too wish they'd squeezed in an HDMI port.

@@KZread2020NN Mine stays surprisingly cool for how well it performs. I don't think you'd be disappointed with the Legion Slim 7, especially if you can get it on sale for $1100, which it's been hitting recently.

Both are fantastic choices, but if u wanted to have portability, the slim s7 is the way to go since it's more light than the 5 pro. If u planning to often bring the laptop everywhere you go slim7, but if u like 100% only use it at home then 5 pro is the choice. Keep in mind that 5 pro have more USB port (4) than slim 7 (2) in case u wanted to use a mouse and keyboard.

For gaming, definitely the G14. I've actually had one for a few days, and the 6700s is impressive! It noticeably outperforms both the 3060 in this Legion Slim 7 and my desktop 6600 XT. If you are going more than gaming, the Legion does have two SSD slots (which also support more high capacity drives that are too thick for the G14) and DDR4 RAM is way more available if you need to go past 16 gigs. The 2022 G14 does run very hot, I've never had a laptop that gets so hot to the touch when gaming. It doesn't seem to hurt performance, but only time will tell if it's a problem for longevity. The Legion Slim 7 alternatively stays very cool under heavy load. If you don't mind the heat, the G14 will hold a lot better for gaming over the coming years. For light gaming and non-gaming tasks, the cooler operation and larger screen of the Legion allow it to make sense. At the prices you listed, both are solid buys so it really depends on what kind of gaming performance you want.

@Andy Thrasher I found some refurbished/openbox $1550 deals for Alienware x15 with i7 11th + RTX 3070 I think this one has better keyboard and better performance than others what do you think? Also Alienware seems to retain their value better in the used market

@@omarkoulache4838 The biggest downside with that Alienware is that the 11th Gen Intel processors weren't great. Gaming performance will be similar (except in DLSS games where the 3070 will run away) but battery life and CPU performance will be better on the G14. Tough call. I'd lean G14 but you're right about the Alienware resell value.

Unfortunately yes on mine. They occasionally go off, but when I'm plugged into power and an external monitor, the fans run the vast majority of the time. Not sure if it's just my unit or what, because the temps aren't even that high (mid-40s CPU and GPU) and the fans still run. Much quieter on battery.

I think that if you connect to an external monitor it runs only via dedicated (nVidia) GPU, that's why the fans are running.

@@AndrewThrasher1987 it's because you're connected directly to your GPU with your external monitor, so the fan needs to be on, there's an option to not connect directly to GPU, and also with the fans on its not even loud, you have to try and hear it, to hear it, or if you're like me who always use headphones, you will never hear the fans, plus I've never picked up fan noise through none of my headset mics or even my USB mic, unless someone has the most sensitive mic in the world and literally pushing it in the vents

You can. On mine at least it constantly bugs you about slow charging when you do this, but it does work.

The rtx 3060 is for 1080p, not for 1440p

If you put it in QUIET mode, fans should not kick up even on plugged in mode.

i get it AMD is great but i found an intel i5 for 700AUD, 4GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti Graphics, 512GB NVMe on sale in Australia. If i was to insist on getting the AMD version would have bumped up the price well over 2000 AUD, no complaints whatsoever, does all i want it to do without issues. I just use my fingernails and then slowly ball up/rub off the adhesive with my fingers. Then a good cleaning afterward and it should look nice and unstickered!

@@audiophile... I dont have any thermal issue. Notebook is cold with basic working, CPU temp 50C GPU 40C,,, middle of the keyboard is hot only when playing. One thing I dont like is, the fan is in quiet mode, almost always runs at least at the lowest speed. Anyway I had lot of laptops during my life and I like him and it is one of the best I had. Perfect notebook if you looking something between gaming and bussines/working notebook

it should be known that this laptop has on board soldered 8or1 6 gig and a single dim slot for expansion meaning you can add a 32 gig or 24 gig, although I'm not sure where to buy a 24 gig they do sell a 32 gig single stick.

Correct me if I am wrong but I read in many places that 40GB (8+32) would be slower than 16GB (8+8) because the speed for the 40GB will be 16GB(8+8) dual channel and 24GB single channel However memory is assigned randomly to RAM so there’s a 16/40 chance it is assigned to dual channel and 24/40 chance it is assigned to single channel, as opposed to being 100% assigned to dual channel in 16GB RAM, which would lead to 10-15% FPS drops in games and frame spikes and inconsistencies I originally ordered the 40GB legion slim 7 but after hearing about this, I amended my order to the 16GB RAM version haha
