A ThinkPad Guy Goes Macbook - Thoughts After 1 Week with the M1 Macbook Air

Ғылым және технология

So after a mix of frustration with the switchable graphics not switching and the hype around Apple's new processors, I exchanged my G14 for a Macbook Air last weekend and have been living that Apple Silicon life since. These are my thoughts after one week of owning a M1 Macbook Air.
Don't hesitate to leave a comment if you have any questions and I'll see what I can do!

14:00 You do have 2 finger tap to right click, 3 finger is for getting more details (kinda like 3D Touch on iPhones), 4 finger swipes for virtual desktop management and 5 finger zoom out for Launchpad summon. Just go to the trackpad settings and and enable them all.

In terms of playing games on m1, here is my experience with m1 mac mini 16gb for CS GO: it handles pretty well but after playing 30-40 minutes with the lowest settings, mac gets too hot. If you keep playing 30-40 minutes everyday, mac's SSD will get damaged and heat problem will surface with time. For instance, I was able to use two external monitors but after playig games for 3-4 months now even with one monitor mac gets hot and I have to restart or close some applications. My takeaway: if you want to play game even if it's a limited time per day, do not use apple computers and do not ruin the lifespan of your computer. Depending on your budget, go for a gaming laptop or even better option for gaming desktop. A whole gaming station with 1tb ssd and 32 gb ram cost around 1300 usd which will last for at least 4-5 years and it's insanely easy to upgrade to higher ram or more SSD along the way.

If you want it to close tabs, MacOS relies on keyboard shortcuts for that: CMD + W (close the tab), CMD + R (refresh the tab), CMD + T (new tab) etc. Even on my workplace Windows laptop I dont use middle click for these things but use Windows shortcuts instead (WIN instead of CMD key works the same way in the browsers)

Nice Video, I'm currently on the search for a new Notebook coming from Thinkpads too. I'm a Linux/Windows Guy and at the moment it seems that nobody can beat Apple M1/M2 Chips. The X13s would be a good alternative but Windows for ARM is in a very early stage and Linux runs on the snapdragon with s lot of tweaks. I code a lot and i carry around my Notebook a lot. So it seems like that the MacBook is the only option at the moment. Sadly the Price... Like you said you get more "Hardware" on the PC side BUT not an M1/2 alternative at the moment. The lack of storage on the Macbook Air ended up bothering me more than I realized it would, so that's a big spec difference, especially when you could feasibly drop a 2TB SSD into that E14 later if you wanted to. I've used a couple of E14s at work. Build quality is actually pretty good, all metal, though not quite the fit and finish of the Macbook Air. Screen and speakers are considerably worse. Perfectly usable in terms of viewing angles and such, but won't look good next to a nicer screen or sound good compared to better speakers. My 10th gen i5 Acer Swift 3 runs quite cool most of the time, so I bet the 11th gen does at least as well. Performance honestly also feels really similar for web/media usage, as does my work X1 Carbon with an 8th Gen i5. Can't touch that Macbook Air battery though or video editing performance.

If you want the best value you can get at immediate purchase, the M1 air for 800 dollars at the moment is the best value you can get. If you value upgradability, robust keyboards, sleeker design, ports, and the freedom of OS, the thinkpad is a more expensive but more reliable choice. At the moment if you plan on compiling lots of code on the go, the M1 will do WAY better however. It is insanely power efficient. Think about it. Does 20%performance(less in 2022) and way better battery life outweigh Outdoor usage (mirror screen) and Inputs? Toe it's kinda close because the air is really great and not overly expensive. But it can't do VMS, it can't run a good os(Linux), and if i needed it as a main machine where performance matters i would need RAM and SSD option that make it really frickin overpriced. It's an awesome upper class typewriter, status symbol and browser. It works for students too that code on it because u won't need tie big SSD option for that. The same can be said about the latest X1 , unless going for older models Thinkpad are overpriced. But there's the cheap option for Thinkpad which makes them worth buying and the input make them better than XPS for example.

Believe me.. Mac's trackpads are still a lot better. It has great recognition for accidental taps, you can leave one finger on the trackpad and it will recognize that is not part of the gesture. F.e. keep your left index finger in the lower corner, try scrolling with your right hand. Do that on about any windows laptop, it will trip. The texture is nicer and, as said before, it has much better resolution.

What kind of gesture are u using that fail you on Windows? My x220 is the oldest laptop that i use and it never accidentally clicks. Holding two hands on the track pad is a silly thing TBH..

  • 2 жыл бұрын

@@emeukal7683 not really. When you’re trying to drag something, it is way better when you can use one hand to drag and the other to keep it clicked on a trackpad. I know most windows laptops will allow you to drag items with double tap, but that limits the range you can drag it over, making it less convenient. I hope you understand what I mean. With old laptops you had 2 “mouse” buttons, which would allow you to do the same. But with smooth trackpads these days, you can’t. It’s a minor inconvenience, but it is an example of a difference in experience. The fact you can’t get around is that Mac’s trackpad sensors and software are superior to most Windows laptop implementations. In resolution, responsiveness and function. (That is, trackpads without mouse buttons below them. But those generally suck anyways, small surface and all). When it comes to gestures, responsiveness and accuracy are usually not on point or par.

Mein Fazit zum MacBook Air nach 11 Monaten: Just do it!

Are you really comparing a 4 generation old Intel cpu with the latest M1 from Apple. To me this is not even close to a fair comparison. For a start, the Intel cpu has only 4 cores and the M1 8 cores. 4 generations ago, the ram was a lot slower as in DDR3 and also has a much slower frequency. Perhaps you should compare the latest with the latest. Be fair and compare a similar specked AMD 5800U with the M1. Both have 8 cores. Both are the latest generation. Both use very fast memory and both have access to very fast SSD's. Both claim 21 hours battery life and both use 10-15 watts.

There is no perfect comparison between Apple and Lenovo-PC, unless it’s Apple vs Microsoft laptop because they both are the maker of the OS, but Apple is 1 step ahead again. I have a 2013 mba 11” and replaced with iPad Pro 11” like 2 years ago but yesterday I bought a x270 from eBay, that is my last Windows laptop, because it has usb c and Ethernet port also I don’t like 13”, it’s a little too big.

While you are right, those fair comparisons exist plenty on youtube and the m1 macs still beat them in most cases. Unlike pretty much any windnows laptop.... the m1 macs ACTUALLY last 20 hours. I bought an m1 pro recently, my first mac, I can vouch for it really lasting that long. I charge it once every 2 days.

Great video :) Also have the G14 (Ryzen7, 16GB, 1650TI) and I think about switching to the base model of the Air for video editing in Davinci Resolve. Can‘t imagine that the Air performs similar without a fan, dedicated GPU and only 8GB RAM - but benchmarks and Videos proof it’s possible. Also for longer projects, including some basic color and fusion effects. Extended battery life and even smaller form factor (including power adapter) are good arguments for the Air compared to the G14.

It’s not garbage, it’s working very well if you can persuade your fingers not to touch it accidentally. Which I never truly succeeded. I’m happy to be back to the traditional function keys, that you can touch without actually pressing them. And it never really worked with Parallels Desktop too.

Anything below 15 inch is pointless for enterprise professionals, you need to buy the P1 or extreme. Can you update the ram or wireless card or LTE ? Does it come with linux or unix for enterprise professionals ? Can you fully repair it under new wee european legislation requirements. Does it have a small cramped Keyboard giving you health problems ? Looks like another failed retail laptop for the occasional user,it was a mistake putting Thinkpad branding on it ?

Hmm... I tend to agree. But not on new mbp and mair. Check out prices of X1 Nano and Macbook Air. Compare the specs. As a X1E 2nd owner, and thinkpad lover, I would choose mac over x1 nano or even x1 carbon.

The X1 Nano with an i7 is £2000+ and the MBP (also with 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM) is £1,700 and absolutely destroys the X1 Nano in performance and battery life so...what are you comparing to come to the conclusion that the Apple pricing is stupid?

@@Kefford666 Can we all agree that a THOUSAND DOLLARS will get you SO MUCH MORE ELSEWHERE!?....and I'm not JUST hating on Apple..I am just really friugal when it comes to spending money on tech.....don't tell me that an i-3 is worth a thousand dollars...with only 8GB OF RAM...not when you can get MORE with a grand regarding CPU...RAM..and possibly even STORAGE! Case & Point?: www.adorama.com/acmwtk2lla.html And then: www.amazon.com/Dell-Laptop-Intel-I5-8265U-XPS9380-5953SLV-PUS/dp/B07RLL1HLM Now I know there's a whole generation out there that might think them unnecessary? But there's also an entire WORKFORCE that uses them...they're called UBS Type-A ports, and the Dell comes with 'em...(as do a lot of other laptops)...and the MacBook doesn't. You'll also notice the i3 as opposed to the i5. And that's what I meant by "stupid"...its not a personal insult to anyone.....its just a classification...like you'd say..."big"....then "huge"....then "gi-normous"....then "stupid big".

@@eddieoconnor4466 I think you mean USB and the older XPS laptops have USB A but the newer models have USB C so you’d need some sort of hub or dongle whichever brand you chose. I’d recommend the newer XPS as it has a 16:10 aspect ratio display which is much nicer to work on than the older 16:9 displays. My Dell Inspiron has two USB A ports but I need more than that skin have to use a USB hub regardless. I don’t know if you haven’t heard but Apple released a new MacBook Air which is many times better than the Intel-based MacBooks and is still priced around $1000. Lastly, there is a lot more to a laptop than just CPU, RAM and storage specs. If you’re comparing servers then yeah fair enough you just care about specs but for a portable device you’re going to handle and use, with built in camera, mic, display, speakers, keyboard, trackpad etc there’s a lot more to consider.

Personally I think the best bang for buck is with a desktop. A really good Ubuntu based system would only be around £450 and for someone who needed macOS the Mac Mini is cheaper than the laptops. Of course you need peripherals too.
