1-Month Asus G14 2022 Review - 6900HS/6700S

Just wanted to share my thoughts about the G14 after a month of ownership. This is a re-upload after realizing the original version contained sensitive on-screen information. Sorry if your comment got lost!

Good news, I received a graphics driver update today (4-27-2022) which seems to have totally fixed the stuttering in Forza Horizon 5. Might make time to re-run the benchmarks to see if performance has changed generally.

The heat issues are probably due to you having the mux switch on, having it on will completely disable the integrated graphics which will force you to use the more power hundry dgpu for every single task.

I have had this laptop for a month now, I paid 1499 for it on sale at Best Buy. It feels so high quality and the battery life is amazing too. And the keyboard feels really good, I’m a bit picky when it comes to keyboards and I’m glad I chose this laptop. I was originally looking for an Intel 12th gen laptop but saw this and researched and amd still has much better efficiency than Intel 12 gen. even though the i7-12700h performs better I like having a smaller laptop and better battery life. The screen is beautiful and the touchpad size is great I only really play esports games and indie games so I figured I could get away with the 6700s version and not pay the extra money, and it has suited my needs just fine, I usually game on 1920x1200 and get way over 120fps on all the games I play. The mic noise cancelling is nice as well as I have my fan curve set pretty aggressive in my manual mode configuration to keep the laptop cool, since all the pre included modes seems to get to 96 degrees on the cpu but after configuring it manually it didn’t get over 87. I updated all of the drivers manually and installed the latest amd Adrenalin software and the stability is really good, never crashed on me yet which is something I had to deal with at least 2 times a day on my r5 3600 and rx 5600 xt desktop, So I am very happy with this. Something that may be helpful for buyers to know is that apparently it is only compatible with up to a 16 gig stick in the sodimm slot along side the 8 gigs on board, but I took a risk and threw a 32gig stick (not all 32gig sticks will work I used a crucial CT32G48C40S5) and now I have 40 GB ram and it works well (I needed this extra ram to run virtual machines). Overall this is a great laptop, I like it and in total only paid like $1670 with the ram I upgraded included.

Since 8gb is soldered , did you notice any performance differences when you added 32gb into the 2nd slot? Doesn’t mismatching the number lose the dual channel ?

  • @owen9273

    @owen9273

    Жыл бұрын

@@uhohginax3 It only looses dual channel when more than 16gb is used, as that is where you reach full capacity on the 8gb of soldered ram. The performance loss is negligible and for most users of these laptops will probably not notice at all, only if you are doing specific testing will you see the difference (after you use more than 16gb of ram).

If you change the CPU Platform sPPT Wattage and lower this too 100/115 and use Manual settings. You'll get rid of that heating issues and lows 50's temp stable and won't lose performance. The fan temps and speeds are tricky. I found after hours of testing, the best is about fan speed 20% from 30c all the way to when it hits 75c keep the fan speeds at 20% this will keep you CPU temps under control and low 50s or under. This does not apply to GPU which mainly stays quite or power saving due to AMD Smart Shift and only really turns on for games. And if you want to skip all of this, use the silent mode for everyday things and when your ready to game use Manual or Turbo depending on the game as well since some games are lock at 60FPS wont need Turbo, and performance is fine maybe even the 6900HS-APU would be better in this case. There is a huge wattage deference between performance mode and turbo it's all in reddit.

Thanks for this awesome review! Really shows a lot of effort and thought. Been researching this laptop mainly for the benefit of its battery life. I believe the MUX switch (iGPU only mode) battery drain issue you're experiencing is a bug caused by the new "AMD SmartShift Max feature". For now it's simply better to rely on Optimus while on battery power

That "Mr Hyde" issue you mention is something I've experienced on every laptop I've ever owned (to varying degrees). There is just something about automatic power and fan control that manufacturers just can't get right. My best experience has usually been using something like Throttlestop to set my own thermal controls.

And the screen was also joy to watch and bright enough. The only drawback of this machine is the the extreme heat that produced when running any thing on it even browser, sometime it goes up to high 80s on light use (web browsing, zoom calls). @@lels6821no, cuz you can cap the fan speed by turning the gpu off and putting the system to silent’ mode, it will decrease the cpu clock speed, and it suppose to lower the cpu temperature but unfortunately it doesn’t. So your laptop will be hot and silent most of the time. In my case i never use silent mode the i keep my system on performance mode and the temp will stay at around 70 if I’m not gaming and the fan noise is fairly acceptable, but switching to turbo mode is when the fan noise will be crazy, even when disabling boost

Hey, I'm wondering how games look when set to 1080p. I would probably set everything to that, since it would run much less hot. But I've had bad luck running games at 720p on a 1080p screen, because the pixels cannot represent it properly and they get really blurry. So if games look worse then a native 1080p screen, then I will probably go for the x13 instead.

Great review! I'm on the fence on this. Im a developer, currently working on a 13 inch dell xps from 2020 with 16GB ram and i desperately need something more powerful and a little bigger without compromising battery life too much and portability since i travel a lot. I was looking at the Dell 15inch XPS with 32gb Ram (the FHD version to have better battery) and this device as well and i really dont know what to do. I need as much real estate as possible on the screen so i can see as much code as possible when im developing since developing on the 13inch is very hard without an external monitor. But at the same time i dont want anything bigger than 15inch and no heavier than around 1,8kg which is why i was looking at the asus too. Any thoughts?

The main con is the heat when in my backpack. It actually never feels too hot on my lap or loud but when it’s in sleep mode in my backpack, it will overheat. great review, but i feel lik theres a huge misconception on trying to game at 1440p or 1660p. I think those resolutions are more for visual pleasure when scrolling on facebook, watching videos or just doing anything that doesnt require actual gaming. On a 14 inch monitor it really doesnt make any sense in my opinion to try and squeeze 1440p on a 14inch monitor, you can literally barely tell the difference depending on the game you play. I think people get too blinded on that. You have a gaming GPU that can literally run any game on this Laptop at 1080p and it'll look phenomenal. It's a completely different story if you're trying to hook it up to a monitor or something thought with higher refresh rate. But the laptop itself i think is probably the best laptop that we'll see in 2022

Thanks for the very thorough review! I'm thinking to buy it and use it for intensive video editing work and occasional gaming. I'm still deciding between G14 & G15 2022 models, I'd pick G14 only for the portability. G15 at the moment appeals to me more as it has 2 m.2 storage slots, but I'm mostly hoping it handles the heat better. I'd be using it 8-10 hours every day so heat and noise pollution really matter to me. Here in Europe, the 32GB models are not available yet so I'm still waiting. Wanted to know if you have any thoughts on this as a work machine.

While parts of the laptop (the bottom cover and area above keyboard) get very hot under heavy load, the keyboard and palm rest aren't too bad. Fan noise is workable since Asus gives you quite a bit of control. The best option for heavier loads is to just set them to run all the time. You can tune the speeds to find non-whiny sweet spots, so you'll hear them but not too bad. If you're going to be editing a ton of video, the Nvidia GPU in the G15 might be hard to say no to, even though the 6700S isn't a slouch practically. Good luck with your decision!

I think people are misleading very much themselves about a possible "heat issue". Every single gaming laptop will have a considerable higher temperature since it's a small device designed with dedicated graphics inside, and that means you'll need to do some tweaks based on common sense. If you understand that most of the air flow comes from the bottom of your device, you probably know that it will be totally blocked by the table and will certainly have more concentrated hot air inside of it. You literally can reduce around 10 degrees simply putting it on a stand. I personally use a mushroom stand because it's way more portable, but you can do it with everything that could raise your laptop UP. About the laptop heating more the CPU when in iGPU mode, it's simple as it is. You will get more concentrated power inside the iGPU, since it's rendering everything you use now, instead of sharing most of its power with the dGPU, and then achieving a good balance between both components. So basically, since your CPU is being more used with iGPU mode, it will heat up more than being in dGPU mode or even Optimus mode. Nothing related to internal issues or something like that, it's just how it's supposed for happen. Also, i really don't see a single problem with your temperatures in iGPU mode. 55C is actually a good range for temperature in idle, depending from each model. BUT like i said before, you could get way better temperatures using it on a stand. Probably around 42 degrees, i think. And if you haven't did before, you're probably lacking a driver called SmartDisplayControl, which enables a option to lock it to 60 FPS when on battery. There is no option available in your video, so that's another issue for you. Always use Power Saving Mode on Windows, and use Silent Mode instead of Windows mode, since Silent mode have some additional tweaks to reduce CPU performance/energy usage. It's a nice review indeed, kinda liked your editing and video quality, but the thermals part is completely wrong and probably made some people really think this laptop have a heating issue and give up from it.

Thanks for the great review. I buy a laptop nearly every year and most "flagship" laptops are either super portable with super high end CPU and cannot game much (or at all) or they come with a super bulky and heavy 300w power supply and cord, crappy battery life so you end up having to carry a 7 pound bag. I think expecting a great gaming experience at 1440p on a 14 inch laptop under 2K$ is not reasonable. Let's be honest, there is no such thing as serious gaming on a 14 inch laptop but in the "ultrabook" world, it is one of the best at the price, by far.

But not the G14! a con I encountered is that sometimes the speakers don't get loud enough to watch Netflix even with the volume at 100%. That's not a problem while out at a coffee shop or restaurant because I'm wearing ANC headphones. But I don't like to wear headphones at home. Should I keep it or return it?
