Talking about the Lenovo ThinkPad T490
I might be a couple of years late, but the T490 is starting to hit eBay, so I thought I'd offer a 2021 perspective on a ThinkPad from just a few years ago. As always, let me know if you have any questions and I'll try to get you an answer. Thanks for watching!

I was fortunate to obtain a Healthcare Edition T490 with a i5 8365-u, uhd620 graphics, 8gbram at the start of the pandemic to replace a dying 2010 macmini core2duo. Best acquisition I ever made. I added an additional 8gb of ram for a total of 16gb, and added a WDSN750 SSD. I also paired it with the Lenovo tb3 docking connected to a Razer core x external GPU. This thing is a beast of a workhorse! The i5 8365-u is more than enough to handle all of my heavy music DAW processes with ease. When it comes to laptpops, the T-series is the one for me.
Going to buy it in this week
i like thinkpad
Hi Andy, thanks for your video. I'm trying to compare refurbished Thinkpads to buy a machine for the sole purpose of online teaching/video conferencing. Would this be a good option or would you recommend a different model? Many thanks
Hello Andy, i have two used ThinkPad choices; X280 (around 1.1Kg weight) and T490 (1.45Kg weight), both are the exact same specs (same i7 8th gen CPU mode, same 16GB RAM, same everything), i know that X290 is 12.5" while T490 is 14", but i don't actually care about the display size, also X280 has the 16GB RAM soldered, whereas T490 has 16GB soldered RAM plus a free RAM slot, but for these type of business laptops i don't really think anyone would need more than 16GB RAM, since if you need to use applications that can utilize more than 16GB RAM, i think this will result in a very high CPU usage which both models cannot handle the high amount of heat resulted from the 2.6GHz+ frequency, so i really confused here with which laptop model to go; X280 or T490 ??
I have one of these, which I purchased recently to replace a T460. Mine has the regular LCD, not the glossy one. I get similar battery life (~4.5 hours) to what you are getting, at full brightness and with all power-saving features disabled (I find them annoying). It was actually worse than that until I upgraded to the latest BIOS/UEFI. For my purposes, I don't care, but they shouldn't have gotten rid of the external battery. My biggest complaint is with the keyboard, which has much worse travel than the T460 and generally feels worse. I really don't like this keyboard, and it's kind of shameful that the once-great Thinkpad keyboards switched to chiclets and then sunk to this level. I also wish that this had a serial port. Otherwise, it's a better machine than the T460, and I've enjoyed it.

Agreed. I had a T460s at work for a couple years. My average in corporate life was 5 hours per charge. The T440s I had before that was also about 5 hours per charge. My current corporate issued P50? Yup. about 5 hours per charge. I'm seeing a pattern for the base battery configurations with my brightness and settings.
If undervolt this model its a BEAST!!! It out performs my ps5 for gaming.

I also use my t490 i5 and razer core x (2060super) for all my gaming needs now. No more console crap for me.
i just bought one from ebay for £500 the specs are very high end i7, 512gb, 16gb
Would you recommend the i5 model if you don't do anything like video editing or heavy tasks?

For sure. On these 8th gen ultrabook CPUs the i5 runs cooler while the thermals greatly limit any advantage the i7 would have.

@@AndrewThrasher1987 Thanks for the answer 👍. I think also the 250 nit Full hd is not as great, but more power efficient.

Lenovo Nice 👍👍
Keys/arrows are a complete misunderstanding and probably not for a long use (typing on it and using arrows). I know they are not the worst (=the smallest) but not profiled correctly and thus, erggonomy of this chassis simply s...s :(
