Great review Andrew. I just ordered it instead of the Asus G14 2024 model as the service support and warranty of Lenovo are really great. Lenovo have technicians ready to repair your laptop at your own home if something bad happens. No need to rush to the store or go somewhere else.

Nice! I see this going up against the many Dell/HP/Lenovo Yoga Ultra portable Laptops with OLED Screens, without the 4k resolution.

I've never really understood those cons. Mediocre battery life is something virtually every single gaming laptop has. Heck, getting over 6 hours doing basic tasks is actually pretty good, and over 2 hours gaming is actually incredible. And same for fan noise, you'd be hard pressed to find any gaming laptop that isn't loud under load.

The problem is that real life numbers are even worse for all sort of reasons... you don't want to go from 100% to 0% at each cycle, you may use peripherals, need more brightness, etc. So on average more like 4 hours of browsing or office work and 1 1/2 hour of gaming. Maybe less.

I mean maybe. But if you use the laptop on battery you're not connected to peripherals most likely. You're probably on the go. You take that thing to half brightness and you'll squeeze 6 hours out of it.@@DR_1_1

Those are still cons though. Gaming laptops are powerful but they have flaws like the ones you mentioned. At the end of the day it’s a laptop and he’s judging using criteria’s that makes a good laptop.

We will see since Microsoft does not send me review devices so I would have to shell out big money to purchase a unit to review.

For a 14" gaming laptop, the Lenovo Legion Slim 5 14 hits so many bullet points Andrew! I love this brand as they always know what they're doing. The only negatives for me are the fair sounding speakers, the mediocre battery life and the fact that the RAM is soldered in. Just make sure you upgrade to 32GB while in the ordering process. Not a deal breaker however as there are so many other positives. This laptop has a gorgeous OLED display, excellent port selection, clear 1080p Webcam and internal mics, upgradeable SSD and Wi-Fi 6E card. All and all, a very impressive 14" gaming laptop from Lenovo! Bravo to Lenovo with their first 14" gaming laptop right out of the park!! Excellent review as always Andrew! 👍😁

@@fantasytky28 Lenovo is not the only company that chooses to solder the RAM memory, especially on a 14” portable laptop. This is common practice and apparently your average consumer doesn’t have a problem with it. If you do, then move on my friend and get something else. It’s really quite simple. You agree? 😁

Nice work brother. I'm in a dilemma. In a week, I have to make a decision on which laptop to get, and I'm torn between getting the Lenovo legion slim 5 14 oled, or the sleeker razer blade 15 oled (2022 // 3070 Ti). I LOVVEE the sleekness of the razer, but I think the legion would give me more raw power for 3D applications like Blender? Idk. HELPPP LOL

Just ordered mine with the R7, 32GB RAM and 1TB for 1.500€. Cant wait, not rally a gamer but it´s nice to have a machine that packs a punch in case you need it.

Nice 14 in gaming laptop. Display is very good. Camera and mics were good. Speakers sounded okay although some notes were a little tinny. With a 4060 gpu geared to105 watts some heat generated is expected. That is just a basic law of physics. The more wattage used the more heat generated. I guess the trick is how to build the cooling systems in these machines is how best to diaapate the heat. Still for those who want a smaller screen gaming unit this is a very good choice. Great review.

Amazing specs. Great resolution for the hardware and 32gigs of 6400MHz RAM for long term use. Perfect for a quality 1440p Monitor.

What a beautiful laptop, I might get it just because it doesn't have a number pad.

The 14" is perfect fit for people let me, mainly use as office laptop but enjoy a bit gaming after hours or during travel. I had ordered one but upgrade to 32gb RAM will cost extra $300 AUD. 16gb RAM should be good enough for most cases.

Yeah for most people who are professionals and have the money to afford it 32gigs will be much better for Programming/Adobe Suite etc programs.

If Lenovo would have included 2x Thunderbolt 4/USB4, this would be a killer machine. But just USB C doesn’t cut it, at least for my setup I need a minimum of 1x Thunderbolt/USB4 port.

Having quite a hard time deciding between this and the Macbook Air M2 16GB RAM / 256 GB SSD. I'm a student, working in UX/UI design (Figma, Adobe CC...) and was on the verge of ordering the Mac until I saw this Lenovo. I'm looking for something practical, good build and performance. Something that can last whole school day without a charge. What really frustrates me about the Mac is the lack of ports, fans and upgradability/repairability. I'm a casual gamer, nothing hardcore, no FPS games and I am willing to sacrifice the gaming part if the swiftness of the Mac OS is worth it. But the graphical performance part is probably better on this Lenovo. Any advice?

if it helps, I sold my M2 Max and going back to Windows. Mac OS became way to gimmicky in the last few updates and it starts to feel clunky at times. Good luck on your decision.

Can you charege it with PD charger ? and is the part under the keyboard plastick or aluminum ?

how about wifi? is it ok for counter strike? (it uses amd wifi chipset right, so should it be switched to intel one right after the buy?)

its sooo good, got the 4060 7840 32GB for 1300€, its such a price performance killer

Dude, kudos to you for cranking all these reviews so fast! But I *must* warn you BE PREPARED TO TAKE A CHILL BREATHER. Would hate to see you burn out Linus Media Group style and start rushing out videos, messing up in both production & editing, or even worse - doing wrong by a business partner or sponsor. I am considering this machine between the Slim pro 9i. I am wondering is this Slim 5 compatible for video editing (just entry level) since the Slim pro 9i has a higher price ($300 more I guess) and also the touch screen, which I never use.

Davinci Resolve is profiting from RAM and raw gpu Power... the 4060 32 RAM 5 will be better than the 4050 9i ... the 4070 9i better than the 5 ... both will be plenty enough for entry Level editing

As my first gaming laptop, should i go for 16 or 32gb ram? Also slim 5 with rtx4060 ryzen 7840hs or intel 5 13500hx? Or legion 5 pro with ryzen 7745hx? Any help?

There's nothing on the 14' market for people who appreciate quieter and cooler laptops, want them compact, and are ok with not playing on max settings. Like if they would put 7840u into this machine an like 70watts into GPU, it would still be a very capable gaming laptop, almost as capable, but running significantly cooler and quieter. All this power efficiency in chips, and manufacturers still decide to put ungodly amounts of power in them to squeeze a couple percents of performance.

How many years will an OLED screen last using a program for more than 4 hours every day? Thank you.

how is the fan noise in balanced mode when gaming? and how is in quiet mode when watching videos or browsing? it's my biggest concern. I tried slim 7 16inch with i7 and 4070, when browsing on quiet mode, fans would kick in every few minutes it was annoying, and when gaming in balanced they were loud! reasons I returned it, and looking for another option, so I would appreciate the answer, thank you. btw i own legion 5P from 2021 5600h, 3050ti, and its so quiet in those scenarios...

All new laptops with high specs that I know have the fan permanently on apparently, I thinks it's worse with these tiny 14'' machines... Even my office Travelmate without gpu (Iris graphics), 32 Gb, i7 13th, the fan is always running, although softly! I had an Acer Nitro V which was totally quiet in normal use, but it was a 8 years old model. Same for a cheap 15.6'' Ideapad, no gpu, maybe 10 years old, the fan is barely audible when it starts.

I just bought this one its my first gaming laptop and dont know too much about them, can i hook it up to an external screen??

Yes it has an HDMI port on the back that can be connected to a monitor. Hook that up and choose your display settings in Windows.

I recently bough the version 7840 32GB with 4060 8GB RAM. The first time I launched Adobe Photoshop Elements and browsed the catalogue after importing photos, the fans went berserk. I hardly made any work yet on Elements but they just went full throttle I have no idea why. It's perplexing to me as I never encountered that on my 13-in M1 MBP with just 8 GB of RAM. Can someone please tell why? Thank you.

It’s because of the different chips that these computers use. The M1 chips are based on ARM architecture as opposed to x86 that Windows devices use. The ARM architecture is extraordinarily efficient and pulls very little power for good performance, and less power pulled = less heat = less fan noise. Loud fan noise will be the case in every windows laptop, however since this is a small device, the fan noise is of a much higher frequency so it might sound more irritating. Bottom line, though, is that the fan noise isn’t an issue and you could probably do most of your work on balanced mode and have a perfectly good, quieter experience. You also don’t need to worry about the fans damaging the device or anything like that!

Form factor is almost better than the ThinkPad t series. If they would ditch the Nvidia graphics card, it would be a better thinkpad

Hands on! Ordered mine too. But 1 question here is how is the built of palm rest and u heard that it’s made of plastic.

While I’m waiting there is Intel new 14th gen. and ultra and AMD 8K series…oh my my my….

Keyboard side isnt aluminium which was NOT mentioned in the video, its not a 100% aluminium chassis.

@@TheAgentAssassin Palmrest isnt aluminium and thats bad. All metal would be top, bottom, palmrest-keyboard. Doesnt matter the tiny cost addition, a laptop is only worth buying if it keeps a 100% 1 material quality level. A good Example is the Legion 7i gen 9 16inch in white.

Anyone know if you can charge the laptop with USB C. Not for gaming, just for portability

I too was torn between this and the G14 and I'm leaning towards the Lenovo for the OLED screen.

Can someone tell me please if these speakers are better than speakers on Lenovo Legion 5? Or they are the same? And what do you think, should I go for this one or Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 (same specs only 70W TDP) ? For watching youtube/doing some work/gaming Thank you so much!

No upgradeable RAM (so no chance to upgrade to LPDDR5x 7500Mhz for example), no USB4 support for this price when you can get it in much cheaper laptops already and no matt display option without PMW flickering is a dealbreaker.

@letitanetlaplume you should try it in advance, OLED flickering can lead to headaches and tired eyes. It's also still not well researched what the long-term effects are. OLED screen look great because the blacks are very dark and colors are great, but rarely come with matt screens so you'll always have the glare especially next to windows or outside, OLED screens also don't get brighter than around 400nits under normal conditions. They also drain the battery much faster than IPS screens, unless you use the dark mode in all apps, which can prolong battery life a bit

What would you use USB 4 for, I'm curious... I have it on my 14'', and I'm almost certain I will never use it? Same goes for touchscreen (it's "only" 180° foldable, not 360 or detachable, so not really a tablet). Agree with matte display it has become one of my main deal breakers but it's personal. OLED and flickering I don't know, also watch for screen door effect, some 2.5K+ have it, and pixelisation is worse than on 1920x1080! Some models have a sort of film on the screen that show scale patterns depending on the angle (it was on another model, maybe a Yoga OLED?)...

@DR_1_1 USB 4 is the newest standard and very much comparable with Thunderbolt 4, it is much more future-proof than the older USB 3.2 one. On such an expensive device it's just unacceptable that Lenovo gives you outdated technique for no apparent reason. You'd get 40 GB/s of data transfer speed, it's more efficient and faster than any other version of USB. It can split the bandwidth into two parts for data and display and also supports PD up to 100-watt and is still backward compatible with Thunderbolt 3.0, USB 2.0, USB 3.0, USB 3.1, and USB 3.2...

Never heard about screen flickering until the last few weeks looking at reviews. Since when is screen flickering normal? If a screen flickers at any brightness thats a broken product

Yes, it is normal for an OLED display. For me not a big deal was I am not sensitive to PWM but some people are. You cannot detect it with the naked eye.

Are you sure Time Spy is 25194? Even a RTX4090 laptop GPU wouldn't make that.

I imagine offering the specs they are at this price they are, they have to choose what components are going to be excluded. With discounts, I was able to price this down to $1,370 w/ tax. Not bad for a RTX 4060 with 32 gb OLED screen, etc. etc. It's got a fingerprint reader (and that counts as Windows Hello), and USB4 although nice is not that important unless you're spending a lot of time transferring large files. Although not USB4, it's USB 3.2 Gen 2 + DP 1.4 + 140W PD, I suspect 90% of all users will be more than satisfied with this, and a small percentage people will need more than 10Gbps data transfer speeds. "Epic Fail" seems harsh, maybe for you. But most reviewers gave this machine a good review. Remember display port 1.4 gets you 120Hz at 4k, not bad for a laptop at this price, and you're likely not pushing such high frame rates on 4k with a 4060 anyway. BUT---If you're an FPS pro, then perhaps you should be playing on a proper gaming machine for high level e-sports, This is fine for a versatile small gaming laptop you can take on a weekend trip to a cafe' etc.
