So the Time Cruisers are basically The Legends Of Tomorrow, cool. Honestly, LEGO could do something like this right now, and use it as an excuse to revisit old themes/worlds. Basically, the theme would be about bunch of characters that travel throughout time fixing anomalous events.

Wouldn't be shocked if they start revisiting the 90s and early 2000s within the next 5-10 years. It's time for the children of parents who grew up with these toys to be old enough to play with LEGO, and familiarity makes parents more spending-happy. I know why my father got himself - I mean me the largest LEGO train set he could find at the time...

Dang. Now I want a Kingdom Hearts-style Lego game that's basically a glorified crossover of Lego's non-licensed themes. In other words, Dimensions without the licensed and toys-to-life stuff. As for the sets, they're pretty good. Same points you brought up in your video. My favorite is probably the Time Twister's Train. Such a great design.

Lego Universe and Lego worlds kinda did that, but it never quite felt as cool as it could be. I want a game that actually goes through all the different stories they've created, and find someway to interconnect them with levels in the style of the TT games. For example, what if while exploring the Insectoids world the Zotaxians uncover a mysterious portal that opens to the land of Chima. The Bugginoids, Mosquitoids, and Mantoids from Galaxy Patrol all come through along with Craniac from Space Police III. Initially they become friends, but Craniac betrays the Zotaxians and steals their tech to transform the Bilgen Bugs into giant cyborg spaceships setting the events of Galaxy Patrol in motion. Make a level about Gypsy escaping with her crew from the UFO fleet, three levels about the original Insectoids story, and then two levels about this new Craniac plot, and you'd have one of many story archs in some giant game. Somethin' like that'd be nice.

To be honest that comic came out in a era when LEGO lost it's identity and the comic shows pretty much that. Disney-esc characters and backgrounds while vehicles are LEGO so as some details. The proportion scales are off. The art style doesn't know wtf it wants to be and that isn't a smart selling point. They should stick to being LEGO if they are just that. Imagine a chibi character being in a disney animation and they are driving cars made out of toys bricks, it just doesn't work. Unless it's some universe mashup crap where the logic doesn't exist.

i remember this theme when i was around 6 or 7. i was so fascinated by it- to me, the aesthetic was colorful, quirky, and combo of all the best things. it left me with this sense of wonder that lego themes weren't just products- each is a pocket world within a larger interconnected Lego universe that can be visited with the right tech. this is definitely one of my most cherished memories of lego from when i was young.

  • @ChomeDome

That comic is really charming, it'd be neat to see lego try and have their own themes in a "normal" artstyle, like would building stuff to solve the problem involve welding masks and the like? Or would everything around turn into lego for just a bit? Who knows cause they don't do stuff like that.

Man, I've heard of or seen most lego themes, but NEVER have I heard of this one. And that comic looks rad, it's almost like the original concept for the lego movie, hodgepodge crazy vehicles, barely holding together but looking exactly like how a kid would play, visiting varying locales that are all super different but somehow coexisting in the same world. I love the idea of most of Lego's themes existing in the same universe

Nowadays I have several of the sets and enjoy rebuilding them and moving them around. I'd love for LEGO to give Time Travel another shot for a theme, there's so much you could do! Each wave or year could be a different- well, year. Dinosaurs, the future, tons of historical eras, it sounds perfect! They did have a set from Master Builder Academy - the Invention Designer-with a steampunk time traveling machine, complete with a "Ripcord" to spin the cockpit of the ship around. There's two other themes currently with a time travel-element I don't wanna mention for fear of spoilers... but it's a shame this will probably not see a resurgence any time soon, unless it's another licensed theme like Doctor Who or Bill and Ted. I'm glad you picked this one, you did your research, I never would have guessed about the comic history of this theme! I'm excited for the Harry Potter look-back, I'm curious what you think of the new sets.

Love these videos so much. Whatever music/audio tones you use for the intro has just the right warm mellow analog-ness that takes me right back to a cozy place in my childhood; the perfect headspace for enjoying LEGO Rewind. Glad to see the deep dive into the Time Cruiser Klick comics; those were a great piece of LEGO media that really only resurfaced online in the past 4-5 years. There was a fantastic group of folks over on Rock Raiders United that translated a good chunk of them. There's a set of three German audio dramas that add additional backstory and craziness to the theme, believe it or not. I was around and online when Time Cruisers was still on the shelves, and the AFOLs *hated* it, so much that it became a bit of a running joke. It was funny to see that in this video Tim sounds like a rare and forgotten character because at the time his omnipresence was a sore point among users on the now-ancient LEGO newsgroups like rec.toys.lego. (This was probably overblown, but he did pop up in many of the Freestyle sets during and after the TimeCruiser hayday. But I've always had a soft spot for its attempt to unify the existing themes and wish Time Twisters had gotten more attention than it has.

Man, we need to see a new LEGO cross-series canon again. LEGO did half-heartedly try to briefly link Ninjago with other intellectual properties under its roof (via Max's Adventures and in-series), but I feel they could've been better utilized. I'd love to see just _how_ Invizable (invisible man from Ultra Agents, infamous tan-fedora toting crook) became a good guy among the Elemental Masters, along with why Toxikita is part of the NInjago canon, a brief explanation as to why Chima is part of the Ninjago realms, and their brief mention of Clutch Powers (season 1, episode 9, The Royal Blacksmiths) gives me a faint, flickering wish that they'll somehow resurrect these themes out of the old brick box. I've even been thinking about a show idea that revives the Johnny Thunder franchise while questioning a lot of the stuff Hollywood archaeologists do (let's face it, most of the time they wind up becoming glorified graverobbers if they're not fighting the supernatural). (And probably the Dino theme getting a soft revival should anything happen to the Jurassic Park IP, just so we can have Johnny meet his descendant, Josh. Like Joestars and fighting, seems dino-caretaking runs in the Thunder bloodline...)

The way it had three separate themes mashed into one set was stunning to me. I vaguely remember building my own back in my Lego prime. I am looking forward to building those four sets but mostly I want to mash modern themes into a new train. This is what mostly interested me in that series, the idea of mashing different themes together and it totally works. FYI: I don't care about the backstory because as a kid the sets always inspired me to create my own story.

Oh man I had the Time Twister train but I had no idea what Lego line it was from. It was a fun set. I also had a random Tim minifig probably from another set but I think he had a different colored hat. I had no idea the Time Twister/Time Cruiser plot, but I recall using the Time Twister mustache guy as a villain for Johnny Thunder to have gunfights with.

Something I discovered on Brickipedia recently says that, according to the writer of the original comics, Dr. Cyber is Timmy's uncle and apparently, Professor Millennium and Tony Twister were alternatively named "Commode Schmidt" and "Baron Blomberg" respectively.

A surprising amount of the strange parts are based on more obscure parts of themes' lore that never made it to the U.S. (The comic was in German originally I believe), the fright knights warring with ufo being the first thing off the top of my head

  • @robonaught

    @robonaught

Yeah there was a commercial which featured the UFO and Fright Knights fighting each other. The thing about making Basil the good guy and making Willa the enemy was how the Fright Knights were marketed in Germany and the rest of Europe while the US they were marketed as making Basil and Willa villains and both on the same side. Though the Knights Kingdom 1 chapter could've been better. Not only does Cedric look unfaithful to his minifig but they could've portrayed him better and made him more reasonable with Tim instead of just immediately assuming he's a spy for King Leo and chucking the kid in the catapult and as Nick quoted ''a carnage loving maniac'' Because reasons explained back in episode 26.

So... there exists a comic book that has expounds on 90's Lego themes lore? That's literally my childhood dream, I spent hundreds of hours looking on the catalogue pages and imagining all the stories happening in these weird worlds.

Man, I really want LEGO to go back to the times where they've been making all these wacky and non-combat oriented themes. Nowadays everything is either licensed so someone else takes care of the plot and theme itself, or dies way too quickly when attempting to do something out of ordinary. Maybe it's the modern day kids that are the problem. : ^(

5:50 is that Gypsy Moth, and 5:52 is that Gypsy Moth's booty? Man, for one of my favorite LEGO characters from one of my favorite themes I'm surprised I've never seen this comic with her. She also doesn't quite look how I expected... I think it's the color around her eyes. Also the Aquantauts are in the Insectiod's world? My entire understanding of this Universe has been turned upside down!

  • @robonaught

The comic's were only released in Germany and not worldwide. Gypsy at least looks better then Cedric the Bull 5:19......did the artist even look at Cedric's minifig? He does not have a mustache like that! He has a big bushy one! I could draw a more faithful and more handsome looking humanized Cedric then that! Also did they have to him an unreasonable ass to Tim? Seriously Lego can we just get one portrayal of Cedric where's he's actually nice and reasonable despite he's the villain to tie in with all the subtle official hints you gave which hinted he's not all bad?
