Lego's Coolest Combination Model

Ойын-сауық

Today we're taking a look at one of my personal favorite aspects of Lego that I feel doesn't get a ton of focus, combination and alternate builds! In particular there's one combination model from the Power Miners series that I really want to focus on, but since it's such a fun topic, I wanted to talk about them as a whole too!

I think the "rambling" is important, as it demonstrates what sets the Crystal Crawler above the rest of the pack, and goes into what makes combination models in general so cool, but also how even professional set designers can struggle under these limitations, and how hard it can be to make something cool, unique, and functional with one.

Man, as a kid I got myself the Mine Mech as my only Power Miners set, because I assumed it was like, the head honcho of the entire line (partially because it was in the Clutch Powers movie and partially because, it was a bloody huge robot) but now Im realising it was the second smallest set.

I used to do Legos as a kid, and I think I fell more into the "alter existing sets myself" style. My favorite thing to do was to take a set and add on to it by making improvements. For example, the first Titanium Mech set from Ninjago (featured the four-armed Ghost mech as well) didn't have bending elbows, so I took the arms apart and remade them to have elbows. Then with the Lego Speed Champions McClaren Senna set, I added a couple of pieces to the interior for a speedometer.

  • @Gameprojordan

It's really fun doing that. The best part is when you do such a good job altering the set that you forget it's not the base version after a while, and then when you revert it back to its original it starts looking weird and unfinished 😂

You ended up feeding a massive carp and an even bigger catfish, and then made a follow up video that you ended up with a really nasty cold, because you would go too deep into the water for fish feeding and got hypothermia. one of my favourite themes for combination models was mixels, it’s got lost in the shuffle since it ended, but there were a whole bunch of little dudes that were very affordable, and the fiction very much encouraged mixing the parts together in your own ways. there were official combos, but just about any pair of mixels could make something really weird or interesting. the parts were somewhat limited, but there were enough joints and hinges and parts for making faces that you could pretty much always make a satisfying little toy, and the individual sets were simple enough that when you wanted to put them back together it’d take like maybe five minutes per guy. such a fun theme, just really brimming with life and creativity.

I wonder if LEGO made combo models that left out a bunch of pieces from their component sets for the reason you mentioned with the crystal crawler. By leaving pieces out of a build, you're encouraged to build other things with them. Maybe this was meant for kids with siblings who couldn't get a lot of builds so they had to share. That way they could each build their own stuff with the combo model acting more like a starter build for them.

The joy of combo models is that they remind us of where we came from: when we were little and just had a couple of sets, we could do so much with so little. It was our training camp, a learning experience. Then, seeing Lego do the same, pushing to use our imagination with just two simple sets, that pushed us to give it a try. As the years went by, the amount of sets owned grew exponentially and so did the pieces used for MOC's. However, after some time, I found it more appealing and more challenging to force myself into building something with just a bunch of sets. It's just easier to throw as many pieces as you can get. On the other hand, going back to basics, where we all started, but with so much more experience, that's where the real fun is, imho. I love the Kardas dragon from Bionicle, I could already do something bigger and better when I was 10 years old. However, I'm more proud of smaller achievements, that made me use those pieces in newer ways.

I actually really like the idea of large combination sets leaving a bit of pieces for you to make your own side build. They give you a nice big model to stimulate your creativity, then leave you with a smaller pile of parts to tempt you

My life has been nothing but LEGO for the last two weeks. I'm helping my mom clear out her closet of our old sets and I've been scrounging for pieces. Sometimes extra pieces included for combination models screw up my brick counts, but thank fuck for bricklink and toysperiod.

8:15 I nearly choked on my supper As someone who recently tried to rebuild every Exo Force Robot Battle Suit in Studio, that comment on some alternate model instructions being lost media hits hard. A lot of 'em were ridiculously hard to find

very swag vid! i always remember seeing these in the instruction booklets but never had the chance to make one. however, i thrived with those 3-in-1 sets; their diverse parts usually gave my kid brain the inspiration to somehow repurpose the handful of hinge pieces into a mech. (as a completely unrelated side note, your nails are very pretty and it inspired me to actually do mine again after not doing it for a hot minute :3 )

Way back when I built all three of these and also put all the remaining pieces back together in this weird 4th model, which was kind of mostly leftovers from the Crawler really, it looked like a very silly top-heavy tractor

I fully agree on the Crystal Crawler being the best Combination Model, and i have future plans to buy the two sets to make it, and i have made an idea for it that would add a reactor type thing and another thing to make the wheels wider
