As a needlepont teacher I love this! He’s teaching basketweave correctly but for those who have tremors the poke method isn’t practical-so what a wonderful way to teach people it’s ok to do something a little different while still working the stitch correctly. It’s about the journey, we need to remove the “elitism” from the stitching community! We all have our ways and reasons for stitching. Way to forge that path Russell!

Great video, Russell. Thanks! I am an experienced stitcher and I love to see male stitchers demonstrate techniques.

Thank you so much ♥️ I have shaky hands too and I applaud you sharing your “scoop” technique. I don’t feel so alone or embarrassed about my shaking watching your video. 🌟🌟🌟 Thanks sooo much for your honest inspiring video. ♥️

That's how I used to stitch basketweave. I am just starting out again (after many years) and I finally found a video to validate the relaxing way of stitching, and not using a frame. God bless.

AWESOME to hear. Yes we define 2 general types of stitchers at our company. 1) The meditative stitcher, This is one who loves a tent stitch either Basketweave or Continental for the entire canvas and 2) the Creative who mixes many threads and different stitches. I am a die hard meditative stitcher and enjoy this craft while watching tv or listening to a podcast - happy stitching to you. -Russell

I've seen people doing in-hand cross stitch this way too. It's wonderful that people can adjust to do a craft given their abilities. There is no "right" way of doing it, only your way. Great video!

i was searching for the way to do the basketweave stitch this way. My late sister and I started a needlepoint rug in 1990. I have not touched this in 20 years and had forgotten how to stitch this way. I'm excited because that is the way we always did this. I, too, have trouble finding holes from the back. hands quiver and vision declines at my age. Thank you, Russell.

Great to hear you enjoyed the 'scoop' stitch, it is awesome. the 2 owners of Rittenhouse Needlepoint and MyNeedlepoint.com are very different stitchers. I, Russell love the meditative value it gives and Stephen loves the creativity it allows. I hope you will come to the shop someday and wonder around the largest needlepoint shop. Cheers, Russell

Thank you for you video. I like that idea. I can’t sit to straight for as long as I like. This method of scoop basket wold be more comfortable and relaxing. On my bucket list is to visit your shop. I am in New Mexico.

Thank you so much for posting this--I'm new to needlepoint and so glad I found this technique early on. This seems like it could be helpful for mitigating RSI issues too. I've got 2 canvases "prepping" underneath my mattress now!

I like you philosophy! Your scooping method is the same way I work duplicate stitch in knitting. I'm going to try it with needlepoint. Thank you!

At last someone doing it in one motion. But the drawn parts makes it difficult for me to see the holes.

I believe the thread I used for this video was silk and ivory which is a blend of silk and wool. It is my favorite thread when I am enjoying the meditative mode of needlepoint!

Thank you. I'm new to needlepoint and have only used a pearl cotton thread. A little too shiny for me and I wanted to get a needlepoint with something that is or looks more like yarn. Any suggestions?

Rittenhouse Needlepoint has more than a lot of thread, I believe we are at 182 lines, it is a crazy amount but great for beginners and advanced needlepointers. As a beginner I would suggest you try a wool such as Appleton or Colonial Persian 3 ply. You can also call the shop and I am happy to further discuss and educate you 215-563-4566 -Russell
