    She is speaking quite simple English, so you do not have to be perfect with it. Also, people with English as a first language hear lots of "mistakes" and errors in pronunciation, so you should be easily understood. Also, we can easily hear when people are finding English hard and we will usually simplify our own replies. Good luck with English and Mandarin.

    This is the best how to learn Mandarin video I've seen. I was hoping all your lessons would be like this: Teach us some words and then have an example of people using the words. But all your other lessons are like everybody else. There are so many other instances where you could use teh same format. Meeting someone and asking if they speak English or Mandarin, eating in a restaurant asking about a menu, etc

    @@user-kj2ir9po2m I used to travel a lot for my work and my experience with most countries is that if can learn the pleasantries: hello, how are you, Thank you, goodbye, then relations go a lot better. People know that none of us can learn all languages and will not expect you to continue (your/my mispronunciation will give it away) but are often pleased that you at least took the time to learn some basics.

    Ni hao, xie xie, I've watched untold amounts of chinese films and have always wanted to know exactly what they were saying, I've been listening and reading the subtitles for either english translated to chinese or vise-versa. China is my number one destination just ahead of India, would even love to move there for a couple years. Thanks for making these videos they are a great introduction to learning. Just from the videos I've watched I get just what tone symbols were and their meaning. Very close to Latin minus the single and double dots... from what I've seen so far. Also I've been trying to find out which is better to learn first, Cantonese or Mandarin... anyone? My plans are to explore the old sites, villages/towns and monasteries... Thanks and xie xie.

    If you are going to mainland China, then Mandarin is better to learn first.

  • @tmd63

    @tmd63

    Mandarin has 4 tones and a neutral tone where as Cantonese has 9 tones. It is easier to learn Mandarin because of this. Also, Mandarin is spoken over a larger area (if you ignore regional dialects like Sichuanese and Shanghaiese), but the Cantonese speakers are the majority that have left China and specifically Hong Kong. You will find that most owners and workers of Chinese shops/restaurants in the UK or US are Cantonese speakers. Unusual side note. In mainland China, the national TV has subtitles because, although there are 7 different main spoken languages in China, they all have the same written language.

    t md Mainland Chinese write with a simplified version of the characters used in Hong Kong and Taiwan, so not identical amigo.

  • @tmd63

    2000ViperGTS Thanks for the comment, but I did mention that the written language relates to mainland China, not Hong Kong or Taiwan who believe they are not a part of Mainland China (PRC). They do use the traditional language set as a way of maintaining the separation. Mainland China used the same written language until recently when it was simplified to make learning the written language easier but Taiwan (ROC) and Hong Kong still maintain the traditional language and refuse to simplify.
