If you're talking about Chris Columbus, the guy who directed home alone, Mrs doubtfire, adventures in babysitting, and wrote gremlins and the goonies, then yes he is a pretty cool guy.

Columbus was heavily criticized by his peers. He was arrested and stripped of his titles when he came home from his final voyage. He was not considered a good guy by the standards of his time by any means. And certainly not by those he was cruelly murdering and enslaving!

I still find it ironic we celebrate Columbus Day in the U.S. when he never actually stepped foot in land that's part of the U.S.

That's kinda missing the point...he discovered the general notion of our continent from the European perspective. Making the point that he didn't technically find what is now the continental US is just a "well, actually" response to feel superior. Columbus is responsible for 'finding' the route that others took to discover North America which would be enough to warrant a holiday, if that were the only concern (which isn't the main issue with the holiday)

@@arthurmartin4616 The Vikings had little idea that they stumbled on anything important when they found Northeast Canada. Nobody, including them, considered their discovery significant because all they found was some frozen forests much like the ones they had found previously. Columbus, and his backers, realized they had stumbled on *something* worth investing in which kicked off the age of discovery. If you wanna give someone a holiday for 'discovering' America (which is dumb anyway) it should go to Columbus.

Yeah, Columbus really was kind of a cool guy...if you ignore his massacring and enslavement of indigenous people, abuse of his crew, and flagrant arrogance to the point where he thought himself smarter than anyone else. Seriously, Columbus' contemporaries hated him and it took centuries of lies for him to become a legend.

The latter didn't discover North America, he didn't discover South America. He didn't even explore freakin' Greenland. The only lands he planted his flag on where what we call the Caribbean. And none of those present day countries and territories there celebrate Columbus Day, which should tell you something. If anything, the United States should be celebrating John Radcliffe, the person responsible for establishing the first permanent English settlement in North America.

@@jlev1028 Defending reality and defending Columbus are two different things. It's silly to go after Columbus then prop up these other people which is my point. Columbus represented his generation which is what the holiday is for. Saying "oh the Vikings did it first" or "he didn't even know it was a continent lolol" are dumb arguments that just make our side look annoying. The reason why the holiday is bad is because we shouldnt celebrate anyone for discovering a place that already had people in it, not because Columbus specifically doesn't deserve a holiday. If you wanna take that as "Columbus apologia" then go for it. Deleted my comments just in case anyone reads what I said as anything other than what I said above.

He discovered our HEMISPHERE? Which one? The Western Hemisphere, which includes most of the UK and Spain where his voyage started? Or the Northern Hemisphere, which includes all of Europe and Asia as well as North America?

The western hemisphere....the one that didn't exist until Columbus figured out therr was enough there to warrant one. Of all the issues with defending Columbus, making a bad point about how technically our current Western Hemisphere includes parts of Europe shouldn't be one of them.

They knew there was a western hemisphere. It's not like they didn't know the world was round. Columbus just underestimated the size so massively that he thought he could make it to the Asia. Everyone else thought he was an idiot because they'd measured the size of of the planet long since. Everyone else was right, Columbus was a dumb fucker. He just got very lucky.

Was he flawed? Yes of course, we are all flawed. I mean, just the other day I murdered thousands of natives and took their land and stuff. Was it a mistake? Sure. But we all make mistakes. Besides look at all the good things I did. You can't judge only by the atrocities. That's unfair.

There's a nominal agreement I can give to FOX that it's not entirely fair to be lambasting Columbus specifically for doing what the rest of Europe would have done anyway. However, they are definitely missing the point that we likewise shouldn't be celebrating someone that embodies the evils of his culture. we don't celebrate more accomplished and more respectable explorers like Cook and Magellan so why should we celebrate Columbus?

The US federal government make Columbus Day a holiday because there was widespread prejudice against Italians who were immigrating from Italy. Over 1300 Italians were lynched in the American south. Italy had recommended Italians not come to America because of the Prejudice and abuse against them. The American government made Columbus Day a holiday to promote better feelings toward italians. America needed the cheap labor that the Italians were bringing.

@@DD-d6d3 Indeed, my Dad's Sicilian parents immigrated post WW1 as teenagers, had to live in the loft of a general store, my Dad & his brother were born at home, no doctor, his brother born a "blue baby", parts of his body permanently paralyzed for life, their Mom had several more late term miscarriages / stillbirths. My Dad was a gifted athlete, refused to ever play golf or teach me golf, as a kid he'd been barred from caddying at the local country club due to his heritage. Likewise my Mom's Irish mother came over in the same era, lucked out as she was a maid servant for an upper middle class Scotch/Irish family who'd been here since the 1790's, the youngest son fell for her, eloped with her, & got disowned from his Presbyterian family for converting to Catholicism to marry their maid. Thus my Mom also grew up dirt poor. It's a pretty common immigrant story. The Irish assimilated in the post Civil War era, so there was no need to make St Patty's day an "official" holiday, altho most people call in sick the next day lol. Funny thing is, you'd expect my parents, having both experienced being on the "bottom rung" of society, would be sympathetic to poor / minority / recent immigrants, but nope, they took to MAGA-ism like ducks to water. "I got mine, you can't have any" is the mentality, unfortunately.

hmm, can we not just give the italians something else to celebrate?

I'm Italian. We have other things. Better things. Christ, Columbus wasn't even sailing for an Italian state (Italy as a country didn't even exist then and wouldn't for nearly four hundred years), had been living in the Iberian peninsula for most of his life, was married to a Spanish woman, and was barely Italian at that point. Italians celebrate people like Garibaldi, a far better dude, much more Italian, and who wasn't a moron. Or any of dozens of artists like Michaelangelo.
