Land Rover Series 3 - Rear Suspension Rebuild and Axle Restoration (Part 3)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

#landrover #landroverseries #restoration
What a mess!!! In episode three of this mini series I get down to tidying up the rear axle and installing some new seals and gaskets. The ambition here is for a leak-proof axle, is there such a thing in Land Rover ownership???
This is the first step in restoring the drivetrain of the 1976 Land Rover Series 3 88" diesel here in the channel - lots more to come. Please subscribe to keep up with this rebuild, restoration and refresh!

@@restosaga when dropping axels maybe try an old pallet . Great for protecting your floor and its easy on the axels too ! Its been 30 years since i worked on a Landy and a couple of triumphs ( Mk2 spit & Mk1 GT6) but i always like the pallet approach Of course if you have a pallet jack / trolley even better. Your (Mrs's )gravel drive might be an issue but being able to drag an axel off to a wash place for high pressure washing /degreasing and or steam cleaning makes a huge difference . Cheers

Thanks! Yes, used this approach the first time but sadly no longer have the room or a pallet truck. Maybe one day...

I’m a Hammerite fan as well but what I’ve found is that it seems to enjoy having a coat of red oxide underneath it. It seems to make it less sticky to apply. I’ve also started using the Satin finish which seems to match better to the finish of alkyd paints that are often used. Fabulously informative video once again and very much appreciated.

I agree, I’m not sure I trust the ‘straight to rust’ claim

Re spring bushes, if you did want to get them out, burning them out is super quick - bit of MAPP gas, did mine no fuss at all in about 3 minutes a side start to finish. Just get them lit from underneath then whack them out with a good hammer and a 22mm socket (fits perfectly).

Doing the diff pinion seal as well, pinion nut is propper tight, bust a socket on it!

It really is! I had bought an expensive socket a few years back that is quite thick-walled so thankfully it didn’t break. Hard to do with diff in situ, too!

I love the Land Rover vids, I just put my paint brushes in a small container of white sprite and they are good to use the next day

Thank you! Unfortunately white spirit doesn’t seem to do the job with hammerite. Needs to buy myself a cheap lot of brushes I think.

@@restosaga it would be good to see a video explaining, why you should think about adding a alternator conversion and so on. Things you should think about to improve safety and performance on your new morris.

I’m not sure what type of paint Hammerite is, it seems invincible if applied well
