Land Rover Series 2 Restoration: Rear Axle Hub Build

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, I build a Land Rover series 2 rear axle hub assembly and set up the wheel bearings. This process is fairly typical of the entire Land Rover Series and Defender range and this video takes the viewer through setting up the bearings, fitting brakes shoes and rebuilding the stub axle and brake plate.

Excellent Video. A clear demonstration with some useful 'top tips'. I was just wondering whether I had shown you that thread cleaning method or whether you had shown me, glad you confirmed it for me!

I noticed that you didn’t replace or discuss the distance pieces on the hub. Had you done a previous video on that or were they in good shape..?

Just want to say thanks for the great video I'd done my rear drivers hub seal done all the end float but forgot to bend the new bearing washer back over the nut hence I started to get very bad vibration over a period of time only to find the hub had come loose but thankfully not damaged anything , just borrowed a DTI reset the end float properly and made sure the washer was bent over the hub nut this time very easily overlooked that could have resulted to loosing a wheel and possibly my life.

I am confused, the red spring. Is that just connected to the snail cam and then the anchoring point on the same backing panel, as in there is no movement passing between the two. Shouldn't it go from the snail cam to the actual shoe itself, that way it has spring torsion on the brake pads?

The right hand side of the spring is hooked onto a peg on the right hand brake shoe that points inwards towards the diff. The spring pulls the right hand shoe up against the snail cam. The left of the spring hooks on to a peg on the back plate. Hopefully that helps?

What's the tool called that measures the bearing tension? Thanks

I think you are referring to the tool measuring the play? Its called a Dial Test Indicator or DTI

Should you pack the bearing with grease? I thought it lubricated by the axel oil.

I don’t think the oil makes it that far up with ends of the axle, they are normally packed with grease.

Always pack with grease. We used to thrown them with force a few times into a grease can which did a good job of forcing the grease in, or just push it in by hand until clean grease comes out the other side.
