Hi ,just found your channel. I have just started building one for my grandsons . Very helpful so far, although I am about two episodes behind . But helps me prepare for what's coming cheers. Malc
I love to see these comments, delighted to be of some help!
Salut. Your accent would (to me) suggest you have lived away from Northern Ireland for a number of years, however your origins sound very clear to me. At age 70 and having left Ulster back in 1972 apparently I also retain my accent. I still have to point out any new French acquaintances that je suis Irlandais pas Anglais which always causes them to express how désolé they are to have insulted me! The accent may soften but is seldom lost …… and that is never a problem! Cordialement RB
You’re quite right, born and bred in Northern Ireland but I’ve never left!
@@restosagaSalut Sir, well then je pense that if you have never left Northern Ireland then you possibly went to a good school (even perhaps a Grammar school). That would soften the accent, says the man who went to Regent House Newtownards. I was born and raised in Ulster, went to university in England where I met my English wife of 49 years, then matured for a some time in Yorkshire and maintenant I am delighted to say we are retraite en France (notre pays adopte). La vie en France n’est pas parfait bien sûr, mais c’est très bonne. Vive la France, vive la République. Bon courage! RB
@romeobravo2023 You hit the nail on the head!
A thick felt mat loosely attached to the bonnet as large as possible, absorbs a lot of top end rattle. Foam glued underneath bonnet is rubbish. Double shag pile carpet is what you want. And I found a good transmission tunnel cover and thick mats in the footwells grab a fair bit of noise too. You have the latter but it may get darker but I sound deadened the underside of my roof and some of the sides and put foam soundproofing on as well. I’ve painted it grey so it doesn’t look very obvious, but the condensation is dramatically reduced and the echo box has the edge taken off it. 200 tdi in mine, also not a quiet engine, and it’s quite reasonable at 50/55 volume wise.
Thanks! These sound like great solutions to the noise issue!
You renewed my appreciation.
Thanks for watching!
If the paint is in good condition, but one wanted to paint it a different tone but similar color,, could someone simply add coats of paint instead of priming then painting?
Theoretically, I suppose so, yes. But! My concern would be a reaction with the base paint - hard to know on this. I’m no expert so couldn’t recommend your technique I’m afraid.
Your MGB GT looks very good. I recently bought a 1971 model and thought it was fine! Famous last words, it was all over the road and gave me a fright! The front suspension bushes were completely shot, I don't know when it last saw a grease gun! It has been fitted with a telescopic front and rear conversion, but the bushes were badly worn. I have completely stripped the front suspension, and the crossmember is getting powder coated. So far, it's been a money pit!
Yikes, that sounds scary but you’ll soon have a great car. Mine looked good from 10ft 😂 Also needed a fair sum spent when I bought it - sure that’s part of the fun, right?
What tyer size are you running? Im trying to find some radials thatll fit the rims and are correct height for the 88” speedo 😂
I must say I never worried too much about the speedo but I’m on 235/85 R16 after a lot of thought and research into the best looking tyre ratio. I like the arches filled!
Not trying to slag you off or anything, the opposite, but if I have any experience with farmers in NI, that’s gotta be 145k! Very cool how it’s not been opened though. Very tidy truck 👍
Haha, I know what you mean, but only as it’s been in the family from new that I trust the 45k
Nice! Is this something you are building? My wife and I volunteer at Railtown 1897, in Jamestown, Ca.. I have actually worked on the locomotive used in Back to the Future 3. High Noon, Bonanza, Gun Smoke and over a hundred other westerns. It is a 1892 Rodgers 4 6 0. It currently is being put back together after getting all new boiler tubes. This model look pretty cool. Cheers👍
Ah nice one, thanks for sharing! Yes, I’m hoping to complete this rolling chassis but am new to model engineering so it will not be a quick process. Thanks for watching!
I've got a Mk1 Mini and space in the garage for another classic and have wanted a Series Landrover for sometime, plan to buy myself one as a retirement present. Would you recommend the 2 1/4 diesel or would I be better going for a petrol, I'm guessing they're maybe not massively different in performance or economy?
Have always fancied at Mk1 Mini myself! I really do like my diesel for its simplicity and reliability. I also enjoy the fact that it’s now very much a minority with many having been removed for more modern lumps. Petrols will always be more desirable and are more powerful but less economical. Don’t look past a good diesel if you find one but do go for a good test drive!
The new catch phrase “In a Land Rover, you’ll get there. Eventually.” Good vid, thanks!
Haha, yeah, I’ll stand by that one. Thanks for watching!
Love it! They are certainly a conversation starter. Especially here in the rural California central valley. They are not presumptuous, so people are not afraid to come up and ask about it. Take one to a hardware store, auto parts store or gas station on a Saturday morning and you’ll make new friends. 👍I Garrandamtee it!👍
Totally agree, you always get a smile and a wave when out and about in a Series Landie!
Very nice series 3 and a very nice video. Thank you! I'm glad you also mentioned the fun just having one of these. I did a complete rebuild of a 1978 swb about twelve years ago and I remember all the parts being cheap then. Bought a galvanised chassis with the papers you need and started working. As I got many parts from a friend from England, the biggest problem for me was to find the parts necessary for LHD. These parts in the end came from al over Europe. Also mounted a capstan winch, overdrive, free wheeling hubs. Very satisfying to do. Tax free in the Netherlands as well and insurance is €5,00 a month. Still needs MOT (APK) here until it's 50 ears old, but passed "met vlag en wimpel" (without any advisory or whatever problem) again a month ago. Now mainly used for hauling fire wood and the odd job. Drive it with a smile!
Amazing! Thanks for sharing. I couldn’t imagine not owning one now!
A very much well done rebuilding it ,thanks for the video
Thank you! And also thanks for watching!!!
I've rebuilt three series landrovers, one of the most important things in my landrover toolbox was WD40 for all those rusted nuts bolts and screws 😂
So true, not sure how much of it I went through during my rebuild! And still do!
Do they actually shrink if left out in the rain? Lol
Not exactly, but they are known to leak quite badly haha
@@restosaga haha🤣😂
I have the Fairy as well. Everything works as it should but at speeds above 45 either the main gearbox or the overdrive really whine. High 4th gear with OD in or out.🤷🏼♂️ I believe some OD bearings are still in use even when not in OD, but don’t know for sure. Earplugs are a must for even short trips. Thoughts?!
Sounds like your OD may be in need of some attention. Even when not engaged, the power to the rear wheels still passes through the OD. Unfortunately they have a small oil capacity and are prone to bearing wear and noise.
@@restosaga Yeah, I’m about to get into it. Actually I’m hoping it is the OD. I can get that out without too much trouble. I believe the same company that makes the Roamerdrive also makes rebuild kits. Thanks for you videos!👍
@calsurflance5598 Nice one, didn’t know that about Roamerdrive rebuild kits!
@@restosaga I believe the company is called Syncro Gearbox’s.
@calsurflance5598 Thanks, I’ll check them out!
I have a 1966 S2A 88” in the same color. They just ooozze character. The simplicity is a major attraction. Nothing that doesn’t absolutely need to be there. Very cool about your family connection to the Landy. I’ll have to check out the restoration videos.👍
The Limestone Landy club is a fairly small one haha. Thanks for watching!
I bought a 67 B. Redid the interior and top and then burned up the generator. Later on rebuilt the motor and transmission, after that just drove it and enjoyed it.
I always wish I had sorted the interior on this one when I had it. 67 was a nice year!
Never heard of those mixing bottles but I'm going to get one a try that way you don't have to mix up a whole gallon when you only need a tank full
They are super handy and not very expensive. Lots of different varieties out there, this one came from Amazon. Thanks for watching!
Take care with those mixing bottles - they expand in time and make % of 2t oil too high. Better to use a syringe to get right % of oil per litre of oil. A decent fully synth oil will be better and for storage, think about using a decent fuel stabiliser as well (stabil is a good one). If you have slighty deeper pockets, garden centres will have ethanol free fuel (aspens and stihl make it). Thanks and hth's 👍🏻
Thanks! All very good points that you make here! 👍🏻
Wow! I’ve just watched your painting and galvanising the landrover vdieo, and subscribed. I’ve also got a Morris minor and a landrover on the way. The Morris has been in the family from new, like your landrover. The landrover is my dads which he called today can have as he’s getting on a bit and barely uses it. It’s a 1966 S2a which I’m looking to paint 😂the Morris is being sold to make room.
That’s brilliant, thanks for sharing that! Also thanks for watching and subscribing! Lots more coming soon!
Great video, Ive had a series 3 now for about 3/4 years. It ended up needing more work than expected when purchasing but like you say, they are nice and simple to work on. I keep toying with selling but have never been able to bring myself to list it for sale. The main reason being regretting getting rid of it in the future.
Thanks for watching! Yes, they do come with ups and downs, but as you say, I’d really regret it if I moved mine on
Is there a rubber plug for the hole in the drum ? Cheers
I’m not too sure, I’ll admit. Would make sense if there was though!
I do not know either why they get under your skin but they do there is just something about them and one day we will own one we have looked at quite a few but up to date we have seen a lot of rubbish but before I go from this world we will have one ,but at the moment we will put up with our freelanders but I love the capstan winch on the front of yours, thanks for the video
They get under your skin and stick there for sure! Thanks for watching! Hopefully you are able to find yourself a good one.
Fantastic that you have so much history with your landrover. I had a mayflower capstan winch on my series three station wagon ( a forerunner to the fairey winch) very capable winch which I used many times for recovery work and tree stump removal. Perhaps sounds odd, but I always liked the recessed fuel filler and door handles. I used to use Haynes manuals, but also picked up official landrover workshop manuals that sometimes come up on ebay. You may already know this, but if you have freewheeling hubs fitted, lock them up about once a week and go for a short drive help keep the hubs lubricated 😊
@DeanRatcliffe Thanks Dean, and thanks for watching. Those Mayflower winches are lovely too!
@@DeanRatcliffe Excellent tip on the freewheeling hubs. I was fortunate to recently find official Land Rover reprint parts catalogue and the workshop manual for my S2A. The Haynes manual is OK but leaves a lot to be desired. I got the new books from Amazon. They print them to order. Glad to have the information! I also got the operators manual. I have the original owners manual (1966) but is full of black mold!😱🤢 I’m trying to find the original sales brochure for 1966. I can’t stress the parts Manuel enough. Many of the numbers are still valid or can be cross referenced, and the illustrations are invaluable!
Que locomotora estás construyendo ?
This is a scale model of the Great Northern A1/1
Very nice 👌
Thank you!
Thanks for the video. It has helped me with my decision to buy. Have you used the deck wash? I’ve not got that on my old countax.
Glad to be of help. Have used the deck wash once. Don’t like the idea of leaving it very wet in there so will likely do it once a month or so
Looks like mine…😢
Twins!
So on the 76 the mirrors always go on wing? Or is it just wjere u plonked them
The wings had the holes in them, so I fitted them. I like the look but can’t say my knowledge of year specifications would be good enough to say this is the way they definitely were.
Have you got a link to the lights you used please? Looking to do something similar in my garage

@@restosaga perfect thanks, placing an order now! 👍
I use mine all the time.. Never fails to start and is a good workhorse. Just have to keep on top of the maintenance.
I’d be lost without mine! Perfect for those trips to the dump, especially!
Mechanics rule❤ Hello from South Africa
True! Hi from Northern Ireland! 🇬🇧
Look forward to your work on this. Have you removed the slide valves from inside the valve chest or have they also not been made yet?
I have the slide valves out in this video, but they are already made thankfully!
Majestic❤
I agree!
@@restosaga for sure👌🚂🌟🌟check out my fowler on my steam era layout
@Tauraco00 Would love one of those full scale!
@@restosagaabsolutely👌🚂🌟👋💖Regards Elizabeth
Looks in very good condition. What is the miles per gallon?
Thank you! I average about 24mpg in this 👍🏻
Don't know whether it's your phone camera adjusting for brightness , but my old Landy glow-plug light started off dim and became brighter as the plugs heated over a few seconds .
I had another comment to this effect, I think it’s the LED bulb I have in is bright even at low voltage. Thanks though!
@@restosaga LED . That foxed me ;-) Cheers .
Took me a second to figure it out myself! Now thinking an old fashioned incandescent bulb may be better though…
I like traditional bulbs . They've given me clues to low voltage from alternators and low oil pressure at idle . Had a 1970 series III in the mid eighties and the diesel engine was far from new . Burnt oil like a destroyer , but would read fine until tickover , even when it needed a litre or more added . Don't miss it . Thankfully enough money for new stuff these days . LoL .Stay well ! :-)
@npet6842 Good point, my low pressure lamp is very sensitive!
As an ocean sailer, I had to cope with lots of stainless on aluminium, particularly on the masts where all fittings are stainless. Comment is correct that they are a long way apart on galvanic scale hence prone to galvanic action via electrolysis. There is an expensive tube of tough weather resistant goop that I bought that electrically isolated a fitting from the mast.
Lovely, thanks for this!
Nice! The LR is looking lovely. Thanks for making and sharing the video. There are ways to test the functioning of the alternator at lower speeds, but once the engine is started I'd expect your electrical demands are minimal until you put aux loads on like lights, wipers etc. I think until the alternator is creating juice just keep the demand low and typically don't idle to raise temp. I think, once the oil is circulating, then gently get temps rising and load is the best way to do this, but gently. Once you're at road speed and revs I'd expect the alternator to be happy. If you put a bit of demand on the battery until then no dramas. Hey, you've been driving this for ages so don't mean to teach you what you clearly already know. Didn't realise the LR took endless draw on the pre-heat. My old (early 90s, so not that old) diesel fun bus has a timer / temp cut out on the heater plugs. One cycle (~10s) is almost always enough so I thought 30s is quite a long time, but I don't know S3 in temp conditions. Unsure if your crank was a bit short of if you might have a dodgy glow plug, or was just unlucky. Again relatively easy to test these. Great vid!
Thanks for the comment! I think I just didn’t give it long enough on the starter, but good to keep YT real haha. Yeah, I’ll stick with this alternator for the moment and just work with it. Would be nice to have 12V from cold idle though!
Never heard of that brand but nice tractor. Wish I could have seen it in action.
Thank you! I’ll maybe do another video of it in action!
@@restosaga Illl look forward to it
@charleshill3789 Challenge accepted haha
I had to use captions to understand most of what you were saying. lol. Between the accent and fast talking. But, it was a really cool video! I loved the startup process. It’s amazing the good condition that it’s in for its age! :)
Thanks for watching! The LR has had a lot of attention over the last few years, just to bring it up to scratch again
The Rover 6 was a dog. Not much more power and torque than the 4, very thirsty and prone to burning exhaust valves.
They definitely don’t get a good reputation but they make a great sound!
My experience in fitting free wheeling hubs to my 2A SWB made 1 mpg difference, from 17 to 18mpg.
Great, thanks for this. I’ve never got round to doing any measuring or calculating.
wish i had a series to start up i would love to come over to Ireland and travel around it we are coming over next week but in my Freelander td4 ,just clean battery terminal and put some gell on you can get it from car shops also i have a new spare wheel that would suit that with a new tyre on thanks for the video
Thanks for watching! Yeah, clean and gel is the first step, batteries are so expensive at the moment. Have a grwat roadtrip!
My Series 3 2.25D the glow plug light starts off dim then gets brighter , prob 20secs and it fires first time.
Interesting! I wonder why this happens? I think I have an LED bulb in there, maybe explains it being bright? Usually does start first go to be honest, standard KZread filming faux pas!
Good video. But, that red ground/earth lead makes my brain cringe. : )
It seems to have caused some cringing in general haha
I've used the same lights in my garage, they make such a difference. Great job on refreshing yours. I've got a bit of garage envy going on. I only have a small single garage at home.
It’s amazing how new lights and some paint transform the place. Thanks, I am very fortunate
Nice summary! There are better door hinges on a Series 3 vs. certainly a Series 2 or 2A. I've never driven a Series 1 to know how well those doors work (perhaps they're much lighter, so can get away with the gate-style hinges?) You also get insect screens on the vent-flaps as standard as far as I know, where they were optional on a Series 2, and different vent--controls. The heating system was way better on a Series 3 vs. Series 2 - an engine-side heat-transfer unit rather than the Smiths (or replacement Clayton Classics) "ankle-burner" unit which takes up space in the passenger compartment. The Series 3 also had narrower sills than a Series 2/2A, which seemed like a worthy change. Having replaced the bulkhead on my my weird 1961 / 200TDI Franken-Land-Rover a few years ago, switching it from a Series 3 bulkhead back to a (correct for the year of the chassis) Series 2A bulkhead, there was a lot more work involved to get it closer to "period correct" than I expected, but we live and learn. With the engine-swap it'll never be a museum piece, but that;s ok with me.
All good details I had missed, nice one! Your Landy sounds great!
Nice and shiny
Thanks! I try to keep it show-ready but also use it regularly!
What are the dimensions of the car body?
Approx 160cm by 75cm
Looking good. I'm still using old T58 flourescent tubes (4 doubles and one over my bench). LEDs are ~20% better as they give ~100 Lumens per W whereas flourescent tubes are ~80 per W. I will make the swap, but I have other projects to prioritise. Like you I also used Sandtex masonry paint inside and when it was clean it was very bright. It is a bit overkill for a garage but a great product. My lights are split diagonal and I don't have the starters in every tube as they are not all necessary all the time. I also find floor paint (I used Ronseal red) to lift. Even with their own sealer and careful prep. I hope your carpet is not rubber backed as this will trap more moisture than plain. I like the twin track shelving and have this in many areas. It's cheap, strong and flexible. Have you considered a pit? Great tour of the workshop and good luck!
Thanks for watching! A pit woukd be amazing but then a whole new shed with a vehicle lift would be better… maybe some day!
