I Painted my Land Rover at Home!!! My Land Rover Series III Restored to its Original Colour!

In my absence from KZread I have been very busy painting the 1976 Land Rover Series III 88" Diesel back to its original Limestone. When I first restored this Land Rover around 10 years ago I painted it in BMW black metallic to match the SVX Land Rover Defender. As time went on, however, I changed my mind and really wanted to return the original colour. In about 6 months I hand-painted the Land Rover in RAL 1015 coach enamel and I am delighted with the result. What do you think???

I’m very impressed with this job. I bought my first Land Rover yesterday, an 87 defender that has a 4 inch lift and mud terrains. It was originally blue but now badly painted white. I want to return it to original but at a sensible pace/cost. This video has inspired me to do the same with mine. I wanted less of a project but at €2k I couldn’t pass it by. Thank you for this video. John.

My pleasure John, all the best with your project!
Superb job! A tip to prevent the spare wheel filling with water is to drill 2 small holes 180° apart. These won't affect strength at all and will let water drain out and prevent wheel rusting.

You’ve done a fabulous job. You might see the rougher bits because you’ve examined every square inch but to everyone else it looks absolutely brilliant. Well done to you 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Nice one! Couldn’t recommend this method highly enough, so handy and inexpensive but still with good results!
A nice warm or hot area screened off with a sheet and or a gazebo, wipe each panel down with acetone prior to painting and whilst you paint is warming up in a bucket surrounded by hot water. Thin the paint by 10%, put the paint in a hot water bath and use the very best fine hair paint brush you can afford to buy. Ordinary bristles leave lines. Nice job done and I like the new galv!

If you have ‘flat’ glass in the wing mirrors, replace it with convex glass. In the days of wing mirrors, I always had convex glass. Virtually removes the blind spot and makes reverse parking a doddle

That vehicle is a credit to you, looking very smart in two colour finish. Both inside and out. Galvanised work also enhances your Land Rover. I painted an old Hillman Avenger some years back in my garage with a brush using quality marine paint in the Summer. When finished it all looked good apart from the drivers side back wing where a large moth had decided to land permanently. Apart from that panel area after removing the said offender the vehicle looked much better and brush strokes were almost absent due to the marine grade finish. 👍

The landy looks awesome - its prompted me to do the same. Any chance of a further video explaining paint mixing, adding solvent, how thick to apply the coating (brush / foam roller) etc. All info would be appreciated ATB Dave

Great job, looks sweet. The later series 3 had the mirrors on the doors but they had the round steel bar as a support unlike the defender type. I’m unsure about early series 3’s. If you look at original series brochures you will see what I mean. All the same it’s a grand Land Rover 🙂👍

Thank you! I used U-Pol etch primer, Simoniz white primer and the colour coats were unbranded from my local motor factor. The metal trim was all re-galvanised.

I bought these about 10 years ago from Sam’s Trim. Sadly I think the company doesn’t exist anymore.
Where did you get the paint from? Am based in Belfast and have accidentally started painting the odd panel on my series 3. Matt black and white, the PO painted it with a roller and a pot of emulsion, looks terrible.

North Down Motor Factors in Newtownards is where I got it. Great stuff, just make sure you give it a good mix/stir when it’s freshly made. All the best!
I have to say you've made a great job of that and quite rightly I hope your chuff with it.. I don't suppose you know if the paint colour RAL 1015 is the white/cream colour that is used on the roof panel on 1970-80s Land Rovers. I have a Defender 300tdi and I think I bought the wrong colour and went for the older colour, but I kind of like the look of it now. I'm not a purist either lol....Also how easy or tricky was it paint the panels you couldn't take of the car? and do you think painting with a light colour help to hide and brush strokes or dents etc etc... I have been quite inspired by you video and I would like to try to paint the roof over the winter and if that works well I may have ago at the rest of the car. Thank you for taking the time to do the clip.
@restosaga
Жыл бұрын
Hi there! I used RAL 1015 as I thought it was the closest to original Limestone which is the colour of Series roof and side panels. Your defender may be more white I think? The panels which remained insitu were the most difficult but only as vertical surfaces were tricky to avoid runs on. Lighter colours hide dents better than dark colours which is handy! Give it a go, even on a test piece. I was a novice at this before I started! Why not practice on the inside of a door or something? Then it can be hidden away. Keep me posted!
Your door seal look exceptional. Which seal did you use. And was it riveted in? Thank you.
@restosaga

Are used an inexpensive defender seal on my doors. A one piece seal. I wasn’t convinced the adhesives available would hold it in place. Especially in the corners. thanks again for your videos. I picked up the series 3 in Suffolk and had her shipped to the United States. It’s been a challenge to say the least. But I love to get my hands dirty.
@restosaga
Жыл бұрын
These seals were not self-adhesive, they were self retaining on the lip of the bodywork that usually gets riveted to
