David, congratulations: you captivated my attention for 16 minutes of my life, never to be relived. So, hello from Alaska. Your Series 3 looks just like my '71 2A except for the obvious differences we all know. Firstly, this comfort and safety nonsense is vastly overrated. If the damn thing gets you from point 'A' to point 'B' with a smile on your face, then who cares? Enjoy!

Hi David, thanks for this. I like your sense of humour and your English is excellent. 5 essential upgrades for my 1973 SWB Series 3: 1) Wolfbox G900 Dashcam which gives me excellent rear vision all the time: 2) Insert a fuse box for accessories including tachometer, USB port etc and relays and fuses for lights, horn, windscreen wipers and motor etc so that high current is not going through switches and stalk; 3) Replace all wiring gradually to decent 10A and 15A wire; 4) Replace headlights with H4 Halogen or LEDs bulbs; 5) Replace blinkers, brake light, rear lights and fog lights with LEDs. Ultimately I plan to replace 2.25L ICE and petrol tank with an electric motor and lithium batteries. I need some key people to fall off the perch before I can afford that ;)

very interesting. I think series landrovers are better below 80kmh this vehicle will never be safe going faster. So, adapt driving style, slow, take it easy, small roads. Better than trying to adapt the vehicle to suit modern driving and motorways. I think you're right about the maintenance, that is key and a small price to pay to look so darn cool 😂

You are right, driving the Land Rover at speeds over 80km/h is just plain up scary. The overdrive does offer more comfort when driving 80km/h, that is what I use it for mostly.

Good video! Weber carb, Pertronix ignition, high torque starter, parabolic springs and radials make all the difference. It still won't stop, turn or accelerate with modern traffic but sure helps. Cheers from Canada.

Great video! Agree on the overdrive, makes my series 3 diesel much more user friendly. I added some under bonnet sound proofing and a previous owner had put some nice quality rubber mats in, again all helped to quieten it down. Oh, and the interior light I fitted, much easier to flick a switch to see what I'm doing than illuminating the landys interior with my phone's torch!

A small domelight would be pretty handy in my Landy as well, currently we just have a torch flying around the interior somewhere :) And yes, the overdrive makes such a huge difference. At first i was a bit sceptical but oh my, this changed so much for the better!

I don't believe there are any "essential" upgrades/modifications. Good quality standard spec seats are comfortable. Many vehicles are worn out, have been poorly maintained with cheap, poor quality parts. Good quality parts make a huge difference. Tyres have a huge impact. Many go for large, wide, aggressive tyres, then complain they are noisy with poor handling. An overdrive is certainly a good addition. With springs I've found good quality multi-leaf springs are as good as parabolics, without affecting the ride height.

Our landy rides on parabolics, comparing these to the old springs they make a huge difference, so much more comfortable! And yes, big offroad tyres look cool but are exactly that, big offroad tyres

@@David-zv2ob There are lots of rubbish quality seats out there which are uncomfortable because they are too thin, not enough support etc. I remember once going along with the idea they need parabolic etc, then I drive a properly restored series with all new good quality parts (steering linkages, springs, shocks etc) and I was blown away by how good it was. My point is you can have an oem spec vehicle that is a very nice place to be, so long as you avoid penny-pinching. Even my 1 Ton IIA rides really nicely on rebuilt springs, new track road ends etc.

At their best Land Rover Series are better than Ferrari's, if you manage your expectations and your goals are beyond what the normal road can offer you! But now that you say this, maybe our seats are a bit crumbly, i don't think they have been replaced or restored in atleast 20 years. As far as i know they could even be original, which i doubt but hey A Ferrari wouldn't be that bad btw :)

The only essential upgrade in this video is fitting seat belts. The vehicle may be much older than you think - even 1980 vehicles all had front belts (SIII 88” stopped production in 1984, not the 1990s). It’s possible that a previous owner removed the belts to get around replacing damage items or just because they didn’t like them and claimed they were never fitted. Some of the other alterations are beneficial, but most are just a matter of maintenance. The springs are a good example - standard spring have ample flex and shock absorption if in good order, your problems (like I had when I bought my 109) being caused by seized, rusted springs. There was no need to change the spec, just strip, clean and lubricate or replace the springs and dampers with original spec. Parabolics just resist the effects of rusting in the future better. Your tyres are better for road driving than the original spec, but far worse off road. The body isn’t all aluminium. If it was, we wouldn’t be plagued with bimetallic or electrolytic corrosion problems. The chassis is not partly settle, it’s 100% steel, and needs a lot of corrosion protection, especially in places like the UK and NL where they can be contaminated by salt. The overdrive is beneficial, but far from essential. The Fairey type you have is prone to howling, so you’re substituting one noise for another. It does save fuel, but is far weaker than the original gear system, especially the fine splines of the clutch sleeve, which wear and eventually shear off, leaving you without drive. At the end of the day, you have a some useful and practical alterations, but I do wish you tubers and the magazines would desist from claiming modifications “essential”. The only essential work on a SIII to make it a regular commuter, working vehicle or road trip vehicle is good maintenance. None of your other problems would have been an issue if the previous owners had done that. My 109 had hundreds of mods (you can see most of them on nicksLandRover.co.uk) including some of those done here. Not one of them can be claimed to be essential, however beneficial and justified I consider them.

Lots of knowelege talking here, thanks for the comment first of all. You are 100% right, none of these modifications are essential, in the same way the whole vehicle itself isn't essential. Does the Land Rover make my life a whole lot cooler? Yes definetly, in that way it is essential for me but not for life itself. Do these mods make my life driving a Land Rover a lot more comfortable? Yes, but once again, definetly not essential for driving. With these things it's mostly about perspective and the things you tell yourself are essential. In the end you are right, were the springs not rusted through we wouldn't have changed them out for parabolics. Were the old tyres not squared off from sitting for 15 years we probably wouldn't have changed them out for different tyres. Good maintenance is key, exactly as you said. @@David-zv2ob, the things you have done are all good mods. I like the wing mirrors for nothing more than their more classic appearance - I haven’t tried those, so I can’t comment on their clarity, but they are in an easier position to see (if the spare wheel isn’t blocking the opposite side). The overdrive is very useful (I have a Roverdrive, with a spare Fairey). You have a nice, charismatic vehicle. I know I’m being pedantic, my contention was just the term “essential”, and I feel the same way when it is used in the magazines for articles about equipment and accessories, and we see it misused all over the place now. Enjoy owning and driving a classic and historic, extremely capable and charming vehicle. 🙂

@@nickboylen6873 You are right, the term itself isn't really used how it's supposed to, let's just call it clickbait :) About the mirrors, I find them to be way more usable. They have a slight magnification which is welcome when they are at such a big distance. The biggest benefit I find is the higher stability they offer. Simply said, they shake way less than the newer style mirrors we had installed at first. Could also be our mounts, they were aftermarket ones with quite soft bushings...

@@David-zv2ob, I ended up fitting Defender mirrors (they’re a direct swap with SIII door mirrors) - they have a much larger field of view and I eventually fitted heater pads to the glass, which makes a world of difference in fog and drizzle as they stay clear. If you are looking for a few other ideas to make things more comfortable or easier to drive, then heated wind screens are wonderful in winter (no more waiting for the engine to warm up before setting off), inertia reel seat belts, the Wright Off Road matting kit makes the vocabulary smart and quieter, and I find pre-2007 Defender seats very comfortable, and they bolt straight in. If you ditch the centre seat for a cubby box, then fit the Defender seats with single bolt hole feet to the inboard bolt hole of each original seat track hole pair, it moves the seats inboard a few cm and makes a huge difference to comfort as you have plenty of elbow and shoulder space. Halogen head lights are very useful, but make sure you fit relays to both dipped and high beam circuits to avoid burning out the switches. They will all make driving much better without interfering with the character of the vehicle.

Well done. Totally agree with all terrain tires and parabolic springs. Make a huge difference. Used to be able to jump up and down on the front bumper and it wouldn’t move. I put in a high ratio gear box instead of an overdrive; stretches out 3rd and 4th like an overdrive but keeps 1st and 2nd basically the same. Figured it was a bit more robust. Mine is a stock petrol engine but I did put on a two barrel Weber carburetor......can’t really say it made much difference. Also very hot here in East Texas, so I put on the tropical roof with the sun screen. That I can recommend, the sun screen and roof vents make a big difference on hot days. Enjoyed your video.

A different gearbox/gearratio also came to mind when deciding on a way to make cruising at 50/60 mph more comfortable. In the end the overdrive won mostly because it was less expensive and a bit easier to install. As a bonus we now have another lever in the car which makes it look even more complicated to normies and potential thieves! Up untill this point i never heard of someone who tried getting more power out of the tiny engine, i take my hat off to that mister. About the heat thing, in summer times we take off the hardtop and install a nice canvas softtop, which we did today. Video on that topic coming in 1-2 weeks!

I was already in the middle of restoring Shrek at the time, the transmission needed a rebuild, so it was an easier decision for me. In my push for more power I also went with a 2.5 cam and a slight over bore. Wish I could say it made a big difference, but no, it’s still a slightly comfy tractor.

I’ve got xpc Michelin on my 109. I agree , there quite pliant and go well with the vehicle. Softer than the crossplys that were on there before

Tyres do make a huge difference in comfort and noise, great choice!

Talking a couple of K for those upgrades, parabolic and an overdrive, go good quality and get a Roamer Drive. I'm not really into the upgrades, I like driving at 50-55 in my 3 ton nosey landy, clinging to the wheel for dear-life, and hoping no one pulls out on me thinking I can stop quickly. Maybe one day for the overdrive when petrol gets more expensive. Good video

The Land Rover definetly isn't cheap. This is technically my dad's Land Rover, i am just happy to be involved! But even with those upgrades, if someone pulls out in front of me when going 50-60 mph death is pretty far up on the "what will happen next" list :) Better not think about that possibility

Nice video and presentation... The electric harness is poor on both Series and Defenders, so it's a good idea to install a main switch to disconnect the batteries. That saved my OneTen from burning. I had a 109" and changed to Defender mirrors because they give a great view. For better comfort and personal safety Defender seats with head rest are superb. You can also raise the seat rails by 3 cm to move the front seat back 5 cm. The bare metal you can insulate with noise killer. Free Wheeling hubs for the front axle to stop the front diffs to be driven when no 4x4 is needed. There are a lot of steps to make you little green hopper very personal. Thanks for posting and keep on rolling. NB: when driving on 7.50x16 rubber you should upgrade the brakes to 109" type.

As for the other suggestions, maybe someday, but definetly not now! We also had the defender mirrors installed (you can even see the old posts they were mounted on, we didn't remove them yet) but these small ones shake way less. I'll try my best to find out the exact parts we put on. For now i reckon you'll find most/simmilar parts on Exmoor Trim. That's where we got the soft top and seats from. As for the parabolic springs, that will be difficult, my dad got them second hand off of a Land Rover maniac :) I'll look into it Mike! Thanks for the nice words

This summer, I would like to get a tailgate (so that I can take the roof off and feel that the rear passengers are kind of safe), overdrive, new (not so knobby) tires, and a new passenger side US spec blinker (it got lost somehow so there is a hole in the front wing).

Overdrive definetly worth it for onroad driving, makes a huge difference in terms of noise and vibrations. Tailgate is also a cool mod (is this a mod, since it's an original Landrover configuration? Eh whatever), makes a perfect parkbench wherever you are!

Hi david what are the leaf springs you used and how many in the stack? Also i have a S2 1959 with a 12j engine but s2a gearbox and stock series 2 axles and need to get a bit more speed. Max speed for me is 60 and nothing more but my engine has so much more power. Any idea how i can get more speed at least to 80 kmph without the overdrive ? Thank you

Many people recommend changing the gear ratios inside the gearbox, how difficult or easy that operation is I don't know, but it might be worth looking into it. As for the speed, is that in km/h or mph? Our S3 goes 105km/h or 65mph About the springs, they are parabolic leafsprings we found second hand on a marketplace. What make and model they are I don't know exactly.

Good luck on your quest for speed!

I've had a crazy problem with my Landrover Series 2 rear axle David not sure if you've had it with your vehicle, it kept blowing oil out of the hub seals on every drive covering the inner walls of the tyres and all over the inside of the brake drums. Changed the seals in the hubs and exactly the same problem until a friend asked if I'd checked the axle breathers, turns out the front and back was completely blocked not letting out air hence blowing oil past the seals.

I would change your lap seat belts to 3 point because lap belts don't stop your head from hitting the steering wheel! I have all your upgrades and agree with your comments but I would recommend adding upgraded headlights and heated windscreen.

The seatbelts are indeed a good option, other than 'it doesn't look stock' there's no reason not to install three point seatbelts. Headlights pretty much the same, the vibe of night driving with candles for headlamps is just cool :) Our Land Rover already has vents to redirect the heater air to the windscreen, works fine enough i'd say. Some good options, but won't happen anytime soon I'm afraid. Thanks for the opinion!

That is a 12 volt female plug wired into the two contacts at the botoom right of the dashboard. Don't know if these contacts are standard on all Series 3's though. If not you can wire these to the battery directly I think, maybe check if this is safe first :)

I am thinking of buying the 88 series 3 ... I hope I am making a right decision. Already after getting a 2 door Jeep Rubicon recently I had my children complaining the Jeep being uncomfortable. and refused to ride with me !

If the sheer coolness of a Series 3 doesn't convey your kids into driving with you, I suggest you send them off to get adopted. That way you can enjoy your new ride in (relative) silence!

Die komen allebei van Marktplaats. Ik koop praktisch alles op Marktplaats, mijn vader heeft de overdrive en bladveren trouwens gevonden, dus bij wie ze vandaan komen kan ik nu ook niet zeggen

Mijn upgrades waren : parabool veren, Defender stoelen, radiaalbanden 235x85x16, dagteller en defender spiegels.

De Defender stoelen zijn vast een heerlijke upgrade! Denk alleen niet dat die ooit in deze Land Rover zullen komen, het voelt gewoon net niet helemaal goed

Mijn langste road trip in de series 3 was naar snowdonia in Wales. We waren al gestrand toen we de boot zagen haha. En mijn 2.25 benzine heeft een topsnelheid van 119.5km zonder overdrive.

@@David-zv2ob of je nu met 85/90 over de kop gaat of met 120, maakt weinig uit het resultaat is het zelfde haha. Maar ik ben wel benieuwd hoe fijn een overdrive nu echt is. Zit er wel steeds naar te kijken. Maar een nieuwe overdrive echt schreeuwend duur. Heb net wel een exmoor trim geluids isolerende matten set besteld. Die de hele vloer en seatbase bedekt. Dat zal het comfort ook wel verhogen.

@@rickz9495 De voornaamste voordelen aan de overdrive zijn het verschil in trillingen en geluid tijdens het rijden. Normaal kun je met 80 niet met elkaar praten, alleen schreeuwen. Met overdrive kun je nu op bijna normaal volume met elkaar praten. Ik kan me voorstellen dat die matten ook veel invloed hebben. Laat maar even weten hoe ie rijdt na de upgrade!

There were two sockets in the dashboard, I don't know if those are standard or what, but they deliver power. Just plugged two pins into the hole and connected those up to a 12V car socket.

Land Rovers zijn bij vrij veel zaken te huren, even googelen en je vindt iets bij je in de buurt. Ik heb na een korte search zaken in Amersfoort, Barneveld en Amsterdam gevonden. Ik zou vooral even het verschil tussen een benzine en een diesel motor testen, die rijden nogal verschillend en geven een andere ervaring.

I'm not familiar with those rear seats. Who makes them?

GB springs make most of the parabolics.You may find others,badged as different but still originating from GB factory.You will need,usually,2 inch over shocks.Mazda mx5 seats are an easy fit and tons better than the LR butt pads.No point in torturing yourself.

The Original leaf springs are much more comfortable if you IGNORE the fact that there is a Speed-bump . Go 60 . Car wont jump . The Original Springs are for a Small Truck , going Off-Road . With 800 kg in the back . This is NOT a Range Rover . Meet Grand-dad .

I get the physics behind that, but here in the Netherlands most speedbumps are in 30km/h zones, so going 60 over there... wouldn't be appreciated I think :) Also a small point to add, the original springs were pretty much rust-welded together. It was more or less like driving on solid steel blocks.

@@David-zv2ob . I get that . But , to be honest , Multi-leaf Springs like the Originals hardly even NEED dampers due to intrinsic Leaf bind . Even in Perfect condition . Those Taper-Leaf springs are great for comfort and ride quality , no doubt ! But you have Lost some of the True Purpose of the Vehicle . If you want to perhaps , turn the back into a Compact Camper , you will end up with it dragging its Arse in the Dirt . Front springs , no big issue . Just match to the existing weight there . Doesn't change that much . But the Rear is different . A Heavy , almost straight , Helper Leaf under the Taper leaves can help address the issue . Only in use when LOADED .

So: Your life-saving Leaf Springs - where did they come from ? another car, special manufacture, or what. Also, did you change all 4? You might find that Landrover Owners need the details.....

We bought them second-hand off of some Land Rover enthousiast who had these parabolic leaf springs just lying around. I don't know what manufacturer they are from nor do I know what model the springs are. We did change all four of them. These are the details, if you want to know more I need to do some digging to find out the exact make and model for the springs. Cheers!

Mate Im going to have a land Rover series 2a, I’ll have to restore it but yeah Im excited and i dont know how old are you but Im 19 yo and i feel we both have the joy to have a land Rover even though we are young haha

20 years on the odometer! Old Landys are a joy for every age, but it's even nicer having one while still being young and fit. This way we can work on it for longer and drive it farther! Enjoy the 2a rebuild process!

Er horen bumpstops op je chassis. Dat zijn rubber blokken waar je as tegen aan komt als ie te ver door veert.

@@David-zv2ob budget parts in gouda en budget parts noord in Drachten/ Vis Scheveningen/ ET Coevorden/ Hurxkens car parts/ Jansen Laro Parts in Udenhout / Ron Bolleboom in Pijnacker en natuurlijk Paddock Spares in Engeland. Ik zal er vast nog wel een paar vergeten zijn.

Very tempting, a friend of mine has led's installed on his Series 3. How much they illuminate is incredible, but i kind of like the dim candles our Landy has :)
