During the Born To Die era, which was her "breakthrough" album, it is nerve racking to put your self up there in front of an audience. I speak from experience. I am a dancer. It's so strange: when I first heard this performance, before I was familiar with her music, I too thought it was awful and embarrassing. But now, years later, when I listen to it again, being much more familiar with her ethereal, almost otherworldly deep voice that is certainly not traditional but definitely beautiful- I actually don't think this is bad at all. She was just nervous. Now that I am more familiar with how beautiful and strange and smooth her vocals can be, I hear it more, now. She is truly a gifted songwriter and singer.

I know in previous interviews Lana's done she says she naturally sings in a higher pitch and has been told to 'tone it down' by producers to make her songs more accessible. She may have been nervous here, but I feel the notes sounded off in some places as she was trying to sing in a lower pitch. The higher notes she hits in this performance are beautiful, and show her talent!!

I just started getting interested in her, would you mind listing some of your favorites? I like songs that give you that 'punch to the gut' type of feeling or like the knot in the back of your throat... lol. I guess a better way to describe my taste is VERY sad, depressing and like you said haunting songs. Songs about depression, addiction, abuse, toxicity, etc. and from what I've read about her work, that's like her niche. So far, my favorite song from her has been the one where she sings something like, "He hit me but it felt like a kiss. He hurt me but it felt like true love, he taught me that loving him was never enough???" I also enjoyed one where she's "a sweet serial killer drinking cherry coke," but mainly because it was so unexpected and honestly a total bop!

Revisiting this performance since it was uploaded and it really isn’t bad at all. I don’t think anyone doubted her talent hence why Born To Die went on to become one of the longest charting female albums of all time and she’s still an acclaimed artist.

That’s how you know someone’s worthy of a loyal fan base: when they lack polished technique and media training but still make it. You could tell she wasn’t industry trained like most stars. The people made her famous, not the label. There’s too many industry plants who lack conviction to their stage persona and never make it past their first era or single. She was a singer-songwriter who brought something beautiful that people could appreciate regardless of how it came out live.

Inconsistent tone, pitchy, weird and sporadic enunciation, pronunciation changes phrase-to-phrase as if she's unsure of what works... the list goes on. There are a few moments where she genuinely sings well, but those are a few phrases among a sea of aforementioned hot garbage. Nowadays she has GREAT live performances. Everyone has off days, and this was so off it almost comes back around to on, in the form of some sort of intentionally garbage, esoteric, artistic statement on the state of the music industry, man.

Taylor M Her tones are always inconsistent and weird, that’s why her fans...me and others...love her. She’s no normal singer, I like it and didn’t think it was that bad. Also that song is hard to sing, it’s obviously not going to sound like the studio version.

In an age where trash EDM and cheap club music were topping the charts, Lana created her own genre and people weren’t ready for it - a genre and art form adopted by many mainstream artists today, like Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo. She is deserving of so much more success; her not winning any Grammys has been the crime of the century.

Con artists are gifted at being able to create things they think people will buy. Lana Del Rey is either a charlatan who has convinced fans to buy into her schtick, or a delusional woman who has convinced others to believe she's as awesome as she thinks she is. I have spent years listening to unique singers and musicians-- it's pretty easy to spot the ones that come onto the scene with red flags and crap. I'm sorry to say, but she's one in the group that is absolutely overrated and rings scam alert bells.

I saw her live during her 2014 tour and she was AMAZING, I figured here she was just nervous. She found her voice and confidence. She did say in her monologue “I was a singer, not a very popular one” she’s a poet at heart ❤️

The moment 04:07 makes me cry. The way Lana sings "loving you" in the high register. Man, this performance was not bad to me at all. There are spots of beauty. I simply forget her turn-aroundings and listen to her music and singing. She is freaking and heavenly beautiful in this white dress.

Normally, when the musical act comes on, I start reading a book or magazine. But Lana just yanked my attention to the screen -- I couldn't take my eyes and ears off her. I knew she was special -- I hadn't felt that way since Tori Amos.

Not really, this is objectively a bad performance and it’s fine it was her first live performance, she was nervous and wasn’t good at controlling her incredible vocals and but she improved eventually, and you can notice that in other live performances that came after this! And ahead of her time by doing a bad performance? Mmmm I don’t think so

I love how she put a twist on this performance from the studio version and the way she can change her voices pitch and sound is so beautiful she really is such a great alternative artist

Daniel flopped with that opening more than Lana did with her performance.

When I saw this performance about 7 years ago, I instantly became a Lana fan. She’s different, unique. This wasn’t the best performance because she was a bit nervous, but it made me fall in love with her so it couldn’t be that bad then❤️

I was 14 years old when I saw this live on SNL, sitting in my kitchen watching the show with my mom late at night. It was my first time ever seeing or hearing Lana, and I just remember immediately thinking, "woah, who is this?" The chimes at the beginning of the song instantly grabbed me - it was like I was transported into Alice and Wonderland's world. Love you Lana - this performance was beautiful, and just the beginning of my forever-fandom to you!

Blue Jeans was bad but this is actually really nice. I like the way she sings in 1:39

I remember watching this the night it aired. I was hooked from the moment I saw her, and have loved her ever since. She looked so lovely and I thought the song was so hauntingly beautiful. To this day, I still don't know why she got so much shit for this performance.

The problem was not so much the performance itself, but the fact it was her first on tv after a huge success worlwide which made the public had very high expectations. It's obvious she was very nervous, which is to be expected for someone who had little experience as her, specially considering TV performances are not as forgiving as concerts. On the other hand, it's natural for people to feel disappointed when you see an artist that had such previous commercial success to flop in her first performance on live tv. It was unfortunate for both the artist and the audience.

​@@clorox1676 Just seeing this, over a year later..But she was actually not at all a household name when this aired, so there was no high expectations. In fact, she was mostly unknown by most of the viewing audience, and I remember there was commentary that she wasn't big enough to be on SNL. I remember 2012 quite well, and people were making fun of her for her performance, for being awkward, for her fake name, for all sorts of things that had nothing to do with the performance. The narrative was that her dad bought her her career. It was all quite stupid, but it's what people online were saying about her.

WTG Lana! She has such a different style of singing, I bet nobody could do this better. All the pop stars have fine tuning but I think she's awesome and her style is a pretty difficult one.

violadash her vocals. She has gotten so much better. She was young and probably very nervous. The beginning was rocky but then she did well at the end. I’m glad her voice has grown to become what it is right now.

Everything is Relevant let’s not kid ourselves this was a terrible performance. I’m a fan of Lana and her voice has improved since then, and yes she was nervous, but this was terrible. She screwed up. Don’t cut slack cause you like her music, just appreciate how much her voice has improved.

Genuine and still refreshingly original. Her vocals are subtle and violent. The music is dreamy and atmospheric with beautiful string arrangements. Who could ask for more, I ask?

the amount of hate she got for this performance was ridiculous she was extremely nervous. she has an amazing voice.

everyone says there's something "imperfect" or "wrong" about this performance, but I think it's the most beautiful and meaningful performance of all time and I will stand by that until I DIE. this performance IS perfect, there is absolutely nothing imperfect about it, it is art and serves a massive purpose in the world. i am mad at everyone who says this is bad or that she's nervous. even if she was nervous, it wouldn't even matter because we all know she would devour it anyways. i lobe my queen

This is wonderful. Had she given this exact performance in 2023 it would have been hailed. Look at the young new female artists of today. This is a vocal style today, not just a nervous young woman on national TV.

I remember seeing this live and thinking, she sounds a little off but there’s something special there. I loved the lyrics to the song and looked up the album version immediately.

This was my introduction to Lana, and I could tell in the first two notes that she had a beautiful, rich tone to her voice. Also I thought her nervousness was endearing, in a time when everyone wanted to be perceived as cool and in-control, and highly curated. Been a fan of this woman ever since 💜
